A Tribute and Interview with Late Comic Book Icon Stan Lee By Allison Kugel

In the winter of 2006, I was granted the opportunity to interview the iconic comic book writer and creator of some of the most celebrated fictional characters in our popular culture, Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber). I must admit that at the time, I was not entirely familiar with his work, although I was aware that his imagination was a national treasure and that if not for him, there would be no Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, or a plethora of other famous superheroes. Motherhood was still a solid three years away, so my son wasn’t yet around to school me on the mythical status of Stan Lee.

Suffice to say, I was still excited for the interview. Upon the start of my conversation with Stan Lee, I was instantly at ease and we felt familiar with one another, like two old friends. Perhaps our shared Jewish heritage didn’t hurt (there is a definite cultural shorthand). The man, himself, was warm, friendly and so willing to share detailed musings about his life. We spoke about his childhood fondness for movies and movie stars of his early days, how his teachers encouraged his writing ability when he was a boy, and his early break

getting hired to be an assistant at a magazine and comic book company. The conversation steadily built towards his memory of thinking up the character of Spider-Man, which really set his career into the stratosphere. It is with all of this in mind that I share some of my favorite moments from my interview with the late, great Stan Lee. Allison Kugel: Tell me about the Stan Lee creative process. What is your routine or pattern for coming up with a new character and writing a story? And are you more successful when you designate a time to sit down and write, or is it better when it just comes to you as you’re doing something else? Stan Lee: To tell you the truth, I think I’m probably the quintessential hack writer. I don’t get inspirations as such. And when I don’t have something to write, I’m not thinking about it at all. But, I’m sort of a pressure writer. If somebody says, “Stan, write something,” and I have to have it by tomorrow morning, I’ll just sit down and I’ll write it. It always seems to come to me. But I’m better doing a rushed job because if it isn’t something that’s due quickly, I won’t

work on it until it becomes almost an emergency. Allison Kugel: I’m going to test your memory here. Do you happen to remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you thought up the idea for Spider-Man? Stan Lee: I had already done The Fantastic Four and I had done, I believe it was The Hulk, and they were doing pretty well. My publisher said, “How about dreaming up another superhero?” So I said, “Okay.” I was sitting at my desk trying to think of one, and I saw a fly crawling on a wall. I said “Gee, wouldn’t it be cool if I could get a hero who could crawl on walls like an insect?” But I think I’m not telling you the truth, because I couldn’t have said, “Wouldn’t it be cool,” because that word wasn’t in common usage back then. So I probably said, “Wouldn’t it be groovy?” You see, when you do a new superhero the biggest problem in the beginning is what super power do you give him? They’ve all been taken! (Laughs) But the idea of somebody who could stick to walls like an insect, I thought that was original. So then I needed a name for him. I figured, how about Insect-Man? And that didn’t sound dramatic. Mosquito-Man? Nah. I went down the list. And when I got to Spider-Man, somehow it sounded dramatic. Spider-Man! So, I had my name. Because he was called SpiderMan… I was working with an artist, Steve Ditko, and we decided, hey why shouldn’t he shoot webs also?! That’s how it happened. Allison Kugel: So then you described exactly what you saw in your mind’s eye and he drew it? Stan Lee: First I gave it to Jack Kirby to do, but Jack always drew these very heroic characters, like Captain America. I said to him, “You know Jack, I want this fellow Peter Parker, I want him to be just an average teenager. Don’t let him look like your typical muscular superhero.” I guess Jack was so used to drawing those kinds of people, that after he drew a page or two I looked at it and I said, “No, that’s not right.” So I said, “Forget it Jack. I’ll give it to another artist.” And Jack didn’t care; he had a lot of other things to do, and we didn’t realize this was going to become such a big script. So I gave it to Steve Ditko, who tended to draw things a little more realistically and more down to earth. And he did it, and I really don’t interfere much in what the costume will look like. Steve pretty much invented the [SpiderMan] costume, himself.

Allison Kugel: You make cameo appearances in all of the films that feature your famous characters. How did that tradition start? Stan Lee: I think it started with Spider-Man. No, actually it started with the X-Men. It was in the first X-Men movie. There was this scene on the beach, and they had me selling hot dogs in the background while something went on. You only saw me on the screen for a couple of seconds. But being the perfectionist that I am, I kept saying to the director, Bryan Singer, “What is my motivation? Should this hot dog that I’m trying to sell have mustard and sauerkraut?” (He breaks up laughing) …. Allison Kugel: (Laughs) Is it kosher?

Stan Lee: “With great power comes great responsibility.” (From SpiderMan) And then there was another one… I think it was a Silver Surfer story, where somebody is talking about the most powerful person in the world. The Silver Surfer says, “There is only one who is all powerful, and his greatest weapon is love.” I wrote

Stan Lee: “Is it rare?” I mean, I really care about these things (Laughs).

Allison Kugel: You’ve talked about how you like for the characters that you write, or the superheroes that you’ve created, to be just as flawed as they are powerful.

Stan Lee: I think if they’re not flawed, they become incredibly uninteresting, because they become one dimensional. If the character can do no wrong and is perfect in every way, he is not a terribly interesting character. I’ve always tried to make the characters I’ve written as realistic as possible, and then just give them one attribute that makes them incredibly colorful so that you want to read about them. But beyond that attribute, they should be as realistic and empathetic as possible. Allison Kugel: Do you think that being a powerful person makes somebody more vulnerable in some ways? Stan Lee: No. Not unless the writer inserts it. As an example, Superman never had that vulnerability. And I think it’s one of the reasons that Spider-Man almost always outsold Superman. It was a little difficult to worry about Superman when you were reading the stories, because you knew nothing could hurt him. And that’s why they finally had to invent Krypton later on. The writers realized what a problem it was to get any reader to really feel there’s any suspense to the stories. So, it’s not that when you’re powerful you have to have vulnerability. It’s that if you’re writing about a character, if he’s a powerful character, unless you give him vulnerability I don’t think he’ll be as interesting to the reader. Allison Kugel: Can you give me one

Something’s coming. “I could really use a snickers bar.” “Great! That’s the deepest

Jerry Seinfeld’s fictional pitch to NBC executives: “It’s a show about nothing (sorry for the obscure reference, millennials).” If it’s good enough for Seinfeld? So here is my column about nothing, or rather a very big something. The elephant in the room, if you will. That something I am referring to is the moments in life that are so significant that you’re at a loss for words and you realize how limiting the English language can be. Sometimes it simply fails you. Well, that’s been my week. In short, I’m processing, people. Raise your hand if you have ever been in an intensely emotional conversation with someone significant in your life, and you are feeling so much in that moment that you cannot open your mouth to utter a single meaningful word. I would say its acting like a diva, but that would sound judgy. Okay mind, you can chillax this week. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups.

All-County All-State Musicians The North Babylon School District is proud to announce the selection of several extremely talented student-musicians to perform in the New York Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association All-County Festival and the New York State School Music Association AllState Music Festival. The NYSCAME All-County Festival concert will take place on Nov. 16 at Half

Hollow Hills East High School, and the NYSSMA All State Music Festival will take place from November 29th through December 2nd at Eastman Theatre in Rochester. The NYSCAME AllCounty students include Sophia Bonventre (chorus), Julia Williams (chorus), Jacob Lesko (mixed chorus), Esther Duclair (orchestra), Evgenia Kennedy (band),

and Carlos Sabogal (band). Their teachers are Christina Henderson (chorus), Chris Wink (band) and Nicole Verderosa (orchestra). Bonventre (chorus) and Lesko (chorus) will also be performing in the NYSSMA All State Music Festival. They are both students of Ms. Christina Henderson.

Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! In 1992, John Theissen founded JTCF, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. John held a toy drive that year during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During the first toy drive he collected over eight hundred new toys in just two weeks and he brought them to three different hospitals. That was the beginning of what has become a yearround organization. Since 1992, JTCF has collected over one million new toys and has donated them to sick and underprivileged children in hospitals and child-care facilities. This organization has also donated therapeutic and recreational equipment and has also been able to help families with medical expenses! Babylon Beach House Residents Members of Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America helped facilitate a pumpkin painting event held at the Babylon Beach House on October 20th. Under the direction of DECA member Erin Corcoran, a Babylon DECA member for three years as well as an active Girl Scout, the students helped residents decorate and paint pumpkins in celebration of the fall season. The students also

handed out snacks and drinks to the residents. DECA is a cocurricular, national business organization with more than 150,000 students which reinforces the skills students learn in their business classes, including, but not limited to, marketing, accounting, human resources, sales and other business subjects. Scott Lockwood, owner of the Babylon Beach House, graciously asked Babylon’s DECA students to return and participate

in additional community service events throughout the course of the school year. Additionally, Mr. Lockwood invited Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s accounting class to visit and get a behind the scenes look at the business operations of his successful business. DECA is Babylon’s largest extra/co-curricular club and has dedicated its time and resources to helping out in the community for more than 19 years.

The collaboration recognized the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, where students raised funds for the Kathy Scottaline

Babylon Students Attend Dreamers’ Conference students, college and career readiness, stress management, and became familiar with the college application process. Additionally, all five student-attendees decided to become members of Long Island Immigrant Student Advocates, an organization which provides community service and networking opportunities, as well as

scholarship opportunities to those interested in joining. “Our ENL students returned to school with hope and were genuinely excited about these opportunities,” said Babylon School District Director of World Languages Michelle Scharff.

In accordance with their literacy curriculum, firstand second-grade students at Babylon Elementary School recently collaborated to showcase their “small moments” written pieces of work

to one another. After spending weeks studying how to properly craft stories in their classrooms, the young authors drew inspiration from real-life experiences to write their literary pieces which were

shared amongst their classmates. Examples of topics the students chose to share with their new friends included family camping trips, attending sporting events and losing their first tooth.

HEAP Processing Begins This Month Temperatures are dropping and many local residents may grow concerned about the ability to afford the high cost of heating their homes. That's why Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) wants to inform local residents that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging will begin processing applications for the 2018-2019 Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), which provides financial assistance for

qualifying households, on Tuesday, November 13. "Our most vulnerable neighbors should never have to choose between heating their homes and putting food on the table," Legislator Donnelly said. "Luckily, HEAP will again provide much needed assistance to Suffolk County seniors struggling to cover their expenses." Depending on the primary heating source, qualifying senior citizen homeowners can receive a basic HEAP benefit of

between $350 and $726 for oil, propane, kerosene natural gas or electricity. Renters can receive a benefit of $30 or $35. Each year, thousands of Suffolk County households receive assistance through HEAP. Assistance is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis while available. Applications were already mailed out to households that received a benefit in last year’s program. Individuals who have not previously received the benefit and wish to submit

a new application to the Office for the Aging must meet one of the following conditions: Age 60 or older, or Under 60 and receiving Social Security Disability, or Under 60 and receiving Supplemental Security Income Code A.
