The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books! Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501(c)3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.
If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations and financial donations are always welcome and The Book Fairies is in need of corporate sponsors. Lodestar is a difference maker in children’s mental health on Long Island. Currently, they serve 70+ families with the goal of preventing out-of-home placement by providing in-home support and assistance to families with children who have severe psychiatric disabilities. This organization is pleased to partner with American Legion Babylon Post #94 for the “Help Kids In Need Succeed” fundraising event on November 17th at 22 Grove Place in Babylon. Mind Where Your Music Comes From Over the past few months I have received numerous letters of appreciation from you that have filled my heart with humility and love. I am grateful to hear that my writing is impacting lives. I am also the first to admit that my writing is stream of consciousness and many times I do not know where the information I share comes from. What I do know for sure is that it does not come from me, but through me. Many times I will awaken in the morning bursting with information that I must write down immediately, for fear that it will disappear before I’ve had the chance to rub my eyes and stumble into the kitchen for a morning dose of caffeine. I call it my “morning download.” I have always believed that each of us is bestowed with gifts to share, which are infused into us by a higher source. I am just as much the student as I am the teacher. Last week I was having a conversation with an old friend about the heroes and mentors we all put up on pedestals, and whom we admire for their courage and
their clarity. The late Dr. Maya Angelou was one of those people for me. I joked with my friend and said, “I don’t know what I would have done if I ever witnessed Dr. Angelou losing her temper and throwing a tantrum.” We laughed, and then my friend said, “It would have made her human.” Indeed, at my best I live in the space of what I write, and yet, at my worst I am only human. I have the occasional bad day, but I would like to think my best days far outweigh my worst days. That is all any of us can hope for while in the flesh. We must forgive ourselves and forgive others as we navigate the human condition, and be kind to yourself when you stumble. Celebrate the victories and learn from the mistakes. Acknowledge that you are a co-creator, and remember to give thanks to the universe for the blessings and gifts you have been granted. I love this radio analogy: A radio in a man’s home bellowed out a beautiful piece of music, and as the man swayed hypnotically to the song being
played, he declared aloud, “What a beautiful song!” Suddenly, he heard the radio respond, “Why, thank you!” The man took a surprised beat and replied back, “Pardon me?” The radio then replied back to the man, “You said you like my song, and so I am thanking you.” The man, incredulous and confused, retorted, “What do you mean, your song?” The radio, proud as a peacock, said, “Well, the song is coming from me.” That is when the man turned to the radio and explained, “The song may be coming through you, but it is certainly not coming from you. Don’t you know that the song you play had to be written, composed, vocalized and instrumentally accompanied by others? And let us not forget the sound engineers, producers, and the technology that allows the radio waves to bring this song into my home. You, sir, are merely an instrument that allows this beautiful music to play. But do not think for a moment that you are the song’s sole creator.”

Brittany Mueller’s class were challenged to recreate the facial details of a historical figure using the Paint application on their computers and the Colored Pencil application on iPads. As a final challenge to their projects, students printed out their completed designs and challenged their classmates to guess who they created based off facts and information read aloud about their chosen historical figure. Global Maker Day is an international event which was organized by United States educators to provide a day of making for students with an authentic global audience in mind. Babylon Memorial Grade School joined more than 1,000 classrooms spanning 39 countries by planning, creating, testing and problem-solving to complete the fun and exciting challenges.

In the library, students were challenged by school librarian Lisa Lindeman to select items from a “Magic Bin” of random items and use their creative genius to “create something that did something.” Students in Donna Hendrickson’s fourthgrade class utilized their architectural skills to build a tower made out of spaghetti and mini marshmallows with the goal in mind of making it stand up for more than 20 seconds. Before beginning the challenge, students brainstormed ideas, chose their best idea and then drew their design. They were then allotted 30 minutes to build their prototype. Afterward, they recorded their results and discussed what they could do to improve their designs. Additionally, thirdgraders enrolled in

In celebration of the nationally recognized “Global Maker Day” event, students at Babylon Memorial Grade School spent the majority of class time of October 23rd engaging in a series of activities which allowed them to expand upon their creative talents in a fun and educational manner. Sixth-grade students enrolled in Heather Hosek’s science classes were asked to engineer a catapult using popsicle sticks, rubber bands, straws, pipe cleaners and a cup. Using these everyday items, the catapult was required to launch a projectile and had to undergo accuracy and power tests. The prechallenge lesson taught students the science behind the engineering of the catapult, including energy transfer from potential energy to kinetic energy, simple machines, forces and measurement. After the catapult challenge, students graphed and

Part of Phelps Lane in North Babylon was blocked off on Nov. 1, as grades K-5 students from William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School of the North Babylon School District formed a human food chain across the road to pass along donated food items to St. Paul’s Reformed Church’s food pantry. This was the result of a monthlong food drive hosted at the school, where students competed throughout the month of October to see
which class would be the top contributor. The school raised a total of 1,500 items of food for St. Paul’s food pantry, which feeds between 350-500 local families a month. “DeLuca’s Human Food Chain is one of our favorite traditions,” DeLuca Principal Vincent Fantauzzi said. “It is a great way for our students to be directly involved in giving back to those members of our local community that are in need.” After the food was passed
along to the pantry, fourthand fifth-grade Student Council representatives helped stock and organize the donations into the pantry shelves. In addition to the school’s contribution to St. Paul’s food pantry, the school also contributes to the district’s North Babylon Bulldog Cupboard through its seasonal donations from the student-run organic garden.
