The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. Visitors of this homegrown haunt have only good things to say! Here are some of their reviews:

Enhancing Problem-Solving Skills Students enrolled in Claire Reilly’s Virtual Enterprise Class at the Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently embarked upon a tower building team exercise in an effort to strengthen their problemsolving skills. Based upon a theory explained in a TED Talk by author Tom Wujec, students had 18 minutes to build a tower with a limited number of supplies such
as spaghetti, masking tape, string and marshmallows, with the objective to build the highest tower with the marshmallow resting on top. According to Mrs. Reilly, this exercise proved to be a lot of fun for the students, and simultaneously helped to illustrate how much work is involved in problem-solving and product development. The Virtual Enterprise course provides an opportunity for students to
create their own product, run their own business and sell to other Virtual Enterprise firms on Long Island, New York, the United States and abroad. Students are tasked with various responsibilities and assume corporate roles such as CEO, CFO, COO, network administrator, marketing administrator, human resources director, payroll manager and more.

6 Tricks For Storing Halloween Treats Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults. Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy. Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage. Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone. 1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as long as some other candy ingredients. Consume candy that is full of nuts first. You can try freezing candy containing nuts, but there is no guarantee the texture

Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions to prolong its shelf life. Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of no more than eight to 10 months. Hershey’s does not recommend putting chocolate in the refrigerator, as doing so can affect texture. 3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened
packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better. 4. Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer. 5. Manage moisture. Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections. The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers. 6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.

Halt Hazards With These Tips Halloween has become a hugely popular time for fun and festivities, but with it comes the potential for a variety of fire hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages every-one to take these simple precautions to stay safe without sacrificing that fun. “Halloween brings an opportunity to wear fun costumes, decorate our homes, and eat too much candy,” says Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “However, without proper safety precautions, we run the risk of turning good times into the wrong kind of scary ones.” According to NFPA research, between 2012 and 2016, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 800 reported home structure fires per year, resulting in an average of two civilian deaths, 34 civilian injuries and $11 million in direct property damage. The decoration
was too close to a heat source such as a candle or equipment in almost half of these fires. NFPA offers these tips to stay safe during the spooky season: Costumes: Avoid fabric that billows or trails behind you, as these can easily ignite. If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable. Decorations: Many common decorations like cornstalks, crepe paper, and dried flowers are very flammable. Keep these and similar decorations far away from any open flames or heat sources, like candles, heaters, and light bulbs. Candles: Using candles as decoration can be risky if not done correctly. Keep them in a well- attended area out of the path of potential t r i c k - o r- t r e a t e r s . Remind children of the dangers of open flames, and make sure they are supervised at all times when candles are lit.
Extinguish candles before leaving an area. Jack-O-lanterns: Glow sticks or electric candles are the safest choice when it comes to lighting up your jack-olantern, but if you choose to use a real candle, do so with extreme caution. Light a candle inside a jack-o-lantern using long fireplace matches or a utility lighter, and keep it away from other decorations. Visibility: Give children flashlights or glowsticks for lighting, these can even be incorporated into the costume. If your child has a mask, ensure the eye holes are large enough for them to see clearly. Smoke Alarms: This is a great time to make sure your smoke alarms are functional and up-todate. Exits: Exits are NOT an appropriate place for decorations. When decorating, ensure that nothing is blocking any escape routes.
