The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta recently joined with Town Clerk Gerry Compitello and the Sons of Italy Constantino Brumidi Lodge to host the annual Pasta and Sauce Food Drive, where over 200 pounds of pasta and 85 jars of sauce was collected. Councilman Manetta and Town Clerk Compitello were joined by Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez to tally
the donations and thank all who contributed. The pasta and sauce collected as a result of this initiative will be donated to the Town of Babylon Food Pantry, which benefits families in need throughout the town. “I would like to sincerely thank everyone who took part in the annual pasta and sauce drive, which was an overwhelming success,” said Councilman Manetta. “The Town of Babylon Food Pantry is one of our key resources and I am
proud that we were able to help them keep their shelves stocked for those in our community who unfortunately struggle to put food on the table.” Councilman Manetta would also like to extend a special thank you to Lindenhurst Memorial Library and director Lisa Kropp for providing a drop-off location for area residents to help contribute to the effort.
Kicking-Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Northwell Health, in collaboration with Babylon and Islip towns, kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and their inaugural “Pink by the Bay” program by lighting the town hall cupolas pink. “Pink by the Bay” encourages communitybased organizations and businesses on Main Street from East Islip to Babylon to light and decorate their storefronts pink, as well as offer patrons educational literature about breast cancer prevention and detection. The program is a month-long effort that will promote breast cancer awareness while benefitting community breast cancer coalitions organized by Northwell Health’s Imbert Cancer Center and Southside Hospital – both in Bay Shore – and Northwell Imaging at Great South Bay in Islip. Participating businesses and community-based organizations received a starter kit, which included breast cancer literature,
pink lights, window decorations and clings as well as chalk to help them decorate storefronts. Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. “It is the Town of Babylon’s privilege to partner with Northwell Health and the Town of Islip to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer with the ‘Pink by the Bay’ campaign. Please honor those we have already lost from this disease by getting checked annually,” said Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “We’re proud to partner with the Town of Babylon and Northwell Health for ‘Pink by the Bay.’ This community-wide effort is a reminder to women and men alike to schedule their mammography. Early detection is the best prevention,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Stephen Bello, PA, executive director of Northwell Health’s Eastern
region, noted, “We hope that this visual pink reminder will cause more people to think about whether they or their loved ones should be screened for breast cancer. When caught early, breast cancer patients can anticipate good treatment outcomes.” During the Town of Islip event, Southside Hospital Executive Director Donna Moravick, NP, said, “When my mother had breast cancer, she received her care at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. North Babylon Public Library
In an effort to foster creativity and collaborative learning skills, students from Babylon Elementary School have a new way of engaging in handson projects thanks to the introduction of the building’s new makerspace classroom. With assistance from
STEAM teacher Emily Moran, students will visit the makerspace to build, create and take part in a number of creative-based activities using various resources. These include but are not limited to a Lego wall, an engineeringbased light-up board with magnetic tiles and building

New Makerspace Classroom blocks. According to Ms. Moran, there are already plans to expand makerspace in order to house a number of additional creative activities. The space was created this year in partnership with donations from the building’s Parent-Teacher Association.
RAISING MONEY TO FIGHT CANCER - Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board recently welcomed Asaf German, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Long Island Chapter’s Man of the Year who raised $460,000 for cancer research and treatment funding, to Town Hall. German, a North Babylon High School graduate, set the record for money raised by an individual in the organization’s history. Supervisor Schaffer, also a graduate of North Babylon High School, congratulated German, who is a local real estate attorney, for shattering the old fundraising mark and creating a new standard. Some of German’s fellow North Babylon classmates who remain in contact were also in attendance, as they helped him collect donations.

Martin Earns Eagle Scout Award David Martin of Babylon, has earned the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. David received his Eagle Scout Award in a Court of Honor ceremony in North Babylon. David’s Scouting career began when he joined Troop 399 in 2014, where he proudly served as Troop Assistant Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Troop Guide, and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. The Court of Honor signifies a Boy Scout’s promotion to Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout is achieved through hard work, with the recipient required to have earned
at least 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership and have a positive impact on society. Scouts are required to complete a project that benefits their community before ascending into the ranks of Eagle Scout. David’s project was to refurbish the children’s garden on the property of Marion G. Vedder school as well as put solar lights in the alley outside the cafeteria. The garden was built in memoriam of 2 members of the MGV family that passed away, a fifth grader who lost her battle to cancer and a beloved security guard. The solar lights were greatly appreciated as
many community groups use the alley at night to get into the cafeteria for meetings. Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, and a member of the Sagtikos District of BSA’s Suffolk County Council. It is sponsored by the North Babylon Lions Club. Originally chartered in 1975, Troop 399 has been serving the community, turning boys into leaders and giving families the opportunity to participate in Scouting for 40 years.
