WEST BABYLON CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE - Students in Mr. Ruiz’s Spanish classes at West Babylon Senior High School recognized Hispanic Heritage month in October by competing in various educational games. Students played Kahoot! online and received a shirt of their choice from España, Argentina or Colombia. Student who placed in the top five received colombinas/bonbons (Colombian lollipops). EXERCISE AND SMILES ON WALK TO SCHOOL DAY - Babylon School District students pounded the pavement with their friends and family members for Walk/Bike to School Day on Oct. 6. Whether riding their bikes or sporting their favorite sneakers, the students started their day with some physical activity before they made their way to their respective schools. They joined together with classmates around the neighborhood for the event. At Babylon Grade School, teachers and staff greeted students with pom-poms and music as they entered the buildings. Babylon Elementary School students were also welcomed with music, and teachers collected sneakers colored by students to create a Walk/ Bike to School banner. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness. Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to ﬁnd clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more. The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! Councilman Terence McSweeney, Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the entire Babylon Town Board would like commend the North Babylon Youth League for their proactive dedication to keeping kids safe. The Youth League recently contacted the town looking for an AED machine. Councilman and chairman of public safety Terence McSweeney reached out to the North Babylon Lions Club, who together with the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce purchased one for them after recognizing the importance of having one of these devices readily available. C o u n c i l m a n McSweeney, who is also a 17 1/2 year member of the FDNY and 21 year member

of the North Babylon Fire Company also recognized the importance of this machine stating he has witnessed countless lives saved with effective CPR and the use of the automated external defibrillator. “I was thrilled to see the youth league reach out to the town board for guidance

on how to fund the purchase of the AED. All parties involved in this really worked together and that’s what it’s all about”. The NB Lions Club held a fundraiser to raise the money for the AED, and the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce pitched in to offset the cost. “This is really about

one community coming together for the greater good” added McSweeney. It’s estimated that communities with comprehensive AED programs that include CPR and AED training for rescuers have achieved survival rates of nearly 40 percent of cardiac arrest victims.
