FREEDOM FORUM 2021 Sunday, October 10, 2021 4PM-6PM Wyandanch Plaza, Wyandanch, NY The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) and Herstory Writers Workshop will hold a Freedom Forum at Wyandanch Plaza in Wyandanch, NY on Sunday, October 10, 2021 from 4PM to 6PM to promote Community Voices for an Equitable Earth. There is a rain date of Sunday, October 17, 2021 from 4PM to 6PM. The purpose of the forum is to examine the question: What are the stories the world needs to hear as we look at environmental justice through the lens of community equity, well-being and

health? The answers will be presented in the form of readings, community interaction and song. This is a free event, and anyone interested is invited to attend. Themed readings, intermingled with selections sung by a Greek Chorus, will transform Wyandanch Plaza into an arena of deep listening and action. This will be followed by a group discussion focusing on how to shape personal stories into literary works. Participants will be invited to share their story ideas, and the culminating event will be a call to action for the community at large. The event, choreographed by writer and performer Renee Joshua Porter, will begin with a series of readings framed around the 17 principals of environmental justice, focusing on Racism, Waste Management as it is inequitably played out, the PIMBY principal (Put in My Back Yard), Depletion of Resources, the Cost of Correction, and more. Herstory will offer follow-up workshops throughout Suffolk County, including pop-up readings at train stations, grocery stores, bodegas, barber shops and hair

The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) presents Two Exciting Events At Wyandanch Plaza

Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District is showing off its green thumb with its student garden. The garden began last year as a part of the mentor program at the school. The students led the task of getting the project started, and it has just taken off from there, according to Forest Avenue Principal Gayle Manchisi. Each grade level has a different vegetable in the garden that was planted in late May. The classes each watered, weeded and cared for their vegetable. The project even pulled in families, who helped to harvest the vegetables on the weekends and during the summer months. “We reached out to families over the summer months to harvest some of the vegetables,” Manchisi said. “The cafeteria staff even got involved by bagging some of the harvested vegetables and handing them out to families with bagged lunches over the summer.” The school really wanted to involve the whole community in the project while also making it a learning experience for the students. For grades one and two, the planting and growing is woven into their science curriculum. Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or cannot find rental units quickly enough in a high cost and low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. While many of us could never imagine being homeless for even a single night, for both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months on average,

while some remain homeless in shelters for several years before securing permanent housing. LICH has expanded their services. These services include street outreach, housing navigation, system data management and outcomes tracking. All of those are part of what has become known as the local “Coordinated Entry System”. Coordinated Entry is a personcentered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services, while prioritizing those who have been homeless the longest and those who are the most in need of housing and support. In 2020, LICH assisted over 3,000 Long Islanders with food and toiletries and connected approximately 200 households to permanent housing. Next month from November 14-November 21 it will be Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, let’s join together and help those in need. Operation Splash Makes Waves For Long Island’s South Shores The low-cost solution to waterfront pollution Operation SPLASH is a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 with the goal of cleaning up and preserving Long Island’s south shore bays, beaches, and salt marshes. Since then, the organization has grown from one caring person to several thousand members across seven chapters dotted along Long Island’s South Shore. SPLASH’s seven cleanup boats run from March through November and are fully operated by volunteer captains and crew members. Over the past three decades, volunteers have retrieved more than 3,000,000 pounds of litter, marine debris, and navigational hazards from the south shore. Most of what is pulled from the water comes from land-based sources — through storm drains and from storms blowing debris into the water. In efforts to reduce the impact of storm drainsourced marine debris, Operation SPLASH designed and currently maintains the Mill Basin Debris Trap and advocated for other environmental legislation in New York State. Beyond collecting marine debris, Operation SPLASH has also made tremendous headway in stemming the awful tide of sewage being dumped in our bays and the toxic pollution entering our waters through stormwater runoff. SPLASH crews actively monitor and identify pollutants, as well as their sources. To reduce the flow of toxins and trash into the bays, SPLASH has collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

Operation SPLASH also offers STEM-based education programs to educate students throughout Nassau County about the importance of Long Island’s south shore bays and the challenges that they face. Students from elementary school through college have the opportunity to learn through hands-on programming that goes beyond the classroom to include boat tours and local excursions. With the leadership of talented and environmentally passionate marine tradespeople, educators and business owners, Operation SPLASH has remained focused on its mission and produces extraordinary results. SPLASH volunteers work hard to protect and preserve the South Shore bays and salt marshes, along with the wildlife, fish, and fowl that call them home. The ultimate goal is to maintain these precious ecosystems through cleanup and outreach efforts for future Long Islanders to respectfully enjoy for generations to come. Operation SPLASH depends on volunteers and donations to crew and maintain each of the seven patrol boats, and actively welcomes new members both during the cleanup season and beyond.
