While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

On Sept. 14, the Wyandanch Union Free School District reopened its doors to students, teachers and staff for the first time since March due to the global coronavirus pandemic. With strict social distancing protocols, masks worn by all and sanitization stations throughout the district’s four schools, students safely entered the 2020-2021 school year with excitement for a unique academic journey. As Wyandanch Memorial High School students were dropped off by parents and school busses, Principal Paul Sibblies reminded everyone to practice social distancing at all times, be mindful of their schedules and to enjoy their first day back to school. Teachers in the Milton L. Olive Middle School were buzzing with anticipation for the year to begin as students had their temperatures checked and

then proceeded to safely and happily enter the building. At Lafrancis Hardiman and Martin Luther King Jr. elementary schools, kindergartners to fourth graders were warmly welcomed by their teachers who were quick to help put away backpacks and school supplies. Teachers then took a moment to review safety guidelines and their first day of learning was underway. At the Lafrancis Hardiman Annex, pre-K and kindergarten classes started with cheerful and helpful staff members who showed students how to practice social distancing in a fun and safe way by following markers along the floor and doorways. Safety of students and staff was the top priority for Superintendent Dr. Gina Talbert as she welcomed students by visiting all of the district’s schools to ensure guidelines were being

followed and the morning was running as scheduled. “We have planned and prepared our staff and students for a safe school year with their education, health and emotional wellbeing as our main focus,” said Talbert. “Our buildings are equipped with cleaning stations, signage reminding everyone to social distance and all staff and students are required to have temperature checks upon entry. Masks must be worn at all times and our maintenance staff will thoroughly sanitize the buildings regularly with an emphasis on our classrooms.” The district is excited for the 2020-21 school year and looks forward to continue bringing a quality educational experience to all students, while keeping them safe and well during these challenging times.

A Generous Donation Restoration Kitchen & Cocktails is one of many new eating establishments which recently set up shop in the Village of Lindenhurst. While their unique blend of scrumptious appetizers, entrees and libations is certainly worthy of regular visits, what truly sets Restoration apart is their commitment to community. When Billy Miller and wife Nicole decided to open a restaurant, they did so with a purpose: to restore faith in humanity, one person at a time. Toward that end, Restoration’s motto - “Be the Good You Want to See in the World” - is accomplished by donating 100% of the net profits to local charities, foundations and families in

need. After learning of the wonderful work that the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst does for children in the community, Billy and Nicole met with the club’s board and were convinced that those works and the Kiwanis motto “To Improve the World One Child and One Community at a Time” - was well-suited to Restoration’s purpose. And so in January they selected Lindenhurst Kiwanis as a recipient of their fundraising efforts. Then the world changed. After the shutdown in March due to the coronavirus, Billy, Nicole, and the entire staff at Restoration, worked tirelessly - at first offering

take-out to patrons and then by setting up tables in what was their parking lot so that diners could safely enjoy the Restoration experience. And thankfully, the community responded by supporting Restoration. As a result of and as payback for that support, on Tuesday Billy and Nicole presented the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst with a check for $14,262.00 that will be used for years to come to help send children to Kamp Kiwanis in upstate New York for a week of summer fun and adventure. Even in trying times such as these, it’s refreshing to know that we can still “Be the Good You Want to See in the World”.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board join the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association to welcome other elected officials, first responders and residents to the town’s hometown 9/11 memorial to mark the 19th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that claimed the lives of 48

town residents. The hometown memorial is located at Overlook Beach, which allowed the town to hold a socially-distanced service in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. Attendees wore face coverings for the entirety of the event. The service was also live-streamed to the town’s Facebook page for those who could not attend in-person. Supervisor Schaffer spoke

Town of Babylon Marks 19th Anniversary of 9/11 about the importance of remembering not only the victims of that terrible day, but also the brave first responders who have lost their lives to illnesses linked to their work at Ground Zero as they sifted through the rubble. The names of the 48 residents killed during the attacks were read aloud, each followed by a single bell tolling.

Due to ongoing health concerns, this year’s festival will be presented online, featuring a series of six Saturday night concerts beginning September 26, 2020, and five Wednesday night workshops beginning September 30th. BACCA’s Executive Director, Liz Mirarchi, stated, “We are grateful for the support of Suffolk County, ensuring that even during this difficult time we are able to continue the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival into its 18th year. With their help, we can promote our local artists and share their music in a way that is both safe and accessible.” The Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival is a celebration of traditional Bluegrass, Americana and Roots Music. The series will be shown on the BACCA YouTube channel, which can be accessed by searching YouTube for Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts and clicking on the “Subscribe” button. Although there is no

fee for viewing or participating in the broadcasts, BACCA will provide an option for viewers to make a donation during the concerts and workshops. The contributions will then be used to support arts and cultural events on Long Island through BACCA’s programming. Our 2020 Line-Up features local and regional acts as well as national touring artists. The Saturday evening shows will be presented as prerecorded concerts, but each will be paired with live commentary by the band members via the Zoom platform, and an interactive feature which will allow the viewers to ask questions and comment in real time. The concerts have been recorded at various locations on Long Island, showing off some of the beautiful and diverse places available to our residents. The workshops will be live, interactive events on five Wednesday evenings.

Babylon IDA Launches Economic Inclusion Initiative The Town of Babylon and the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA), as part of the Babylon is Back Initiative, launched a program aimed at supporting and elevating MWBE entrepreneurs within the Town. The Economic Inclusion Initiative is an innovative program that provides financial, technical, and legal assistance to existing and aspiring entrepreneurs who reside or operate their businesses within the Town. A cornerstone of the effort is a Storefront Development Pilot Program, which seeks to improve occupancy rates in underutilized business districts while also providing small business owners with affordable space needed to advance their businesses. “The Town of Babylon is one of the, if not the most, diverse towns

on Long Island and it’s vitally important that our economic development programs reflect that,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “When starting or expanding a business, there are so many roadblocks and hurdles to overcome. Who do you talk to? Where and how do you get the process started? This program’s goal is to provide answers to these business-related questions and ensure the support required for success is available for our MWBE entrepreneurs.” The Storefront Development Pilot Program is already paying dividends for two local business owners. William Certain of Spin the Yard, a boutique store based in Huntington Station, is relocating his businesses to his hometown of Wyandanch, and taking advantage of the rent

incentive program available at 1529 Straight Path Road. This location, in addition to having more affordable storefront options, is also going to be the home for creative entrepreneurs to learn more about developing and growing their business. In addition, Andrew Ayodeji of Mack Apparel leveraged the program’s offering to take his sports apparel business from the trunk of his car and into a commercial storefront in North Amityville. “It’s been a dream of mine for many years to take my business out of the trunk of my car and into a proper space that provides me an official presence within our community. This program has turned this into a reality,” stated Andrew Ayodeji, Owner of Mack Apparel. “I’m thankful for the assistance and support provided by

the Town that has allowed me to afford a storefront in my local community and provide me with the presence to elevate my business.” “These success stories can be duplicated so many times over, we just need our local entrepreneurs to be aware that these resources are available to them and we are here to help in any way we can,” stated Babylon is Back Program Director Matthew McDonough. “Starting a business is an extremely daunting task, especially if you are unsure of all the technical aspects to setting one up.
