Who you were, who you are, and who you will be are three different people.” - Unknown In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention. My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old. When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have

struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance. Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities. Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because

I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth. In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room. In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy). But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

The Post Office Cafe in Babylon is hosting the 27th Annual Race for MPS on Saturday, October 20th in celebration of Mark and Casey Lessing. Proceeds from the race will benefit the National MPS Society, Inc. Registration and checkins begin at 8 a.m. at The Post Office Café. The 1K fun run begins promptly at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K at 10 a.m. Pre-registration, prior to October 7, costs $13.00 for the fun run and $25.00 for the 5K. Cost to register after October 7 is $15.00 for the fun run and $30.00 for the 5K. Online registration closes on Thursday, October 19th at midnight. Thereafter, runners must register in-person at The Post Office Café. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today unveiled a new feature for the ‘Choose LI – Local and Independent’ website. The website, which is a collaborative effort that seeks to raise awareness, advocate and inspire the community to support local and independent businesses on Long Island, has been updated to include a searchable and interactive map of all farmstands, farmers markets, fish markets, vineyards, breweries, cideries, and distilleries in Suffolk County. “Suffolk County is home to some of the most diverse and exciting agricultural and fishing selections in the entire state of New York,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “We want our residents to RACING TO SUPPORT MPS RESEARCH- All ages coming out to support be able to take advantage of all the products that National MPS Society. were grown and harvested right here in our own backyard. Residents are encouraged to “Take the Pledge” and commit to spending 10 percent of their weekly food budget, approximately $17.60, on local and independent food goods. Businesses can consider creating promotional specials using the #1760 and #ChooseLI hashtags to help pledgees meet their weekly commitments. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, New Yorkers spend approximately $176 a week on food. An analysis done by Suffolk County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning states that if just 10 percent of the over 450,000 household located in Suffolk County commits to spending 10 percent of their weekly food budget on local food and beverages over a typical harvest season for Suffolk County, that spending would add an estimated $19 million into the Suffolk County economy. This $19 million

in direct spending would create $33 million in total economic activity, and create nearly 1,000 local jobs. Suffolk County’s rich agricultural and fishing heritage helps sustain the County’s economic growth by generating tourism dollars, supporting local restaurants and service industries, and providing fresh produce for residents. Suffolk County has 39,000 acres of farmland, 36,000 of which are actively farmed, and 20,000 of which are permanently preserved through County, Town, and private land preservation programs. Suffolk County is home to over 600 farms, which employ more than 5,000 people. The County’s fisheries contribute to Long Island’s $5.9 billion tourism industry, with ocean-related businesses generating over $1.9 billion in goods and services for the County and employing nearly 34,000 people. Currently, there are over 700 Suffolk County commercial fishing establishments, which are responsible for over $31 million in direct revenues, creating nearly $81 million in economic activity and over 1,000 jobs. Green options in home siding If new siding is on the list of mustdo home projects this year, there are many factors to consider. Though it’s a transformative renovation, replacement siding is a signiﬁcant and potentially expensive undertaking. Therefore, careful consideration must be given to the materials used and their maintenance, longevity, insulation factor, and cost. Many homeowners also want siding that is ecofriendly. Sustainability is an important consideration for many homeowners. Data from the National Association of Home Builders’ “Green Multifamily and Single Family Homes 2017 SmartMarket Brief” indicates that at least one-third of singlefamily and multifamily home builders who were surveyed said that green building is a signiﬁcant portion of their overall activity (more than 60 percent of their portfolio). By 2022, this number should increase to nearly one-half in both the single-family and multifamily sectors. Green building has become an important and established part of the residental construction sector.

made from natural clay, which can be an excellent insulator. Stucco HouseLogic says traditional stucco is made from sand and Portland cement mixed with water to make a usable plaster. It’s tough and durable — often lasting the life of the house. Eco-friendly variants include stucco made with an earth-and-lime mixture, offsetting the CO2 emissions associated with cement production. Stucco can reduce air infiltration that causes drafts in a home. Fiber-cement Fiber-cement is similar to stucco in that it is made from sand, Portland cement, clay, and wood pulp fibers. It can be fire-resistant and insect-proof and will not rot. It’s a stable material that can recover

almost 80 percent of the initial cost, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Stone This nonrenewable resource can be beautiful on a home and durable, but mining it can impact the environment. If homeowners can use reclaimed or displaced stone, those are more sustainable options. Manufactured stone, which is cement and other materials molded to look like stone, is also aesthetically appealing and more ecofriendly. Replacing siding is a signiﬁcant undertaking. Homeowners can consider sustainability when selecting replacement siding materials.

Suffolk Puts "Text-A-Tip" School Safety Measure in Place Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that the Suffolk County Police Department’s ‘TextA-Tip’ mobile phone line is now live for the start of the 2018-2019 school year. The ‘Text-A-Tip’ system is designed exclusively for individuals who have information about an impending threat to school

facilities across the County, and will allow residents to confidentially share any information pertaining to a threat in a Suffolk County school. The "Text-A-Tip" system is being facilitated by Nixle, a commercial service provider that the Suffolk County Police Department has used for several other

applications. Anyone who has information regarding a possible threat to a school in Suffolk County can use this service by texting the number 888-777. In the body of the text write “TIP SUFFOLK” followed by the message and the name of the school. The tips will then be configured to generate e-mails and text

messages to the Suffolk County Police Department. The tips will be directed to the Suffolk County Police Department’s Communications section, who will determine where to route the tips based on their content. From there the Suffolk County Police Department will launch an immediate investigation to

determine the credibility of the threat. Tips will be monitored on a 24/7 basis, and school districts will be notified accordingly. While the system is confidential, intentional false tips will be prosecuted. This service comes at no additional cost to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The "Text-A-Tip" initiative has been implemented in addition to several other public safety measures recently undertaken by Suffolk County to ensure that students, teachers, administrators and staff remain safe while in schools.
