SEAN AND KYLE’S LEMONADE STAND - The 5th Annual Sean and Kyle’s Lemonade Stand for Answer the Call/The New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund took place on Saturday, September 11, 2021 in Babylon Village. This local event has raised over $45,000 for the families of our fallen heroes. Over 20 gallons of lemonade were poured and made $4,678 in 3 hours! The online virtual event has raised almost $7,000 and will continue to run throughout the month of September. It was a great day with the local community. New York State Senator Phil Boyle, Mayor Mary Adams, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilmen McSweeney, Manetta, Gregory, and Martinez were all there, as well as County Executive Steve Bellone, who all came by thirsty and were so supportive. There was live music, never forget tattoos, thin line bracelets, and people happy to show their support.

Seasonal Recipes! Carrot Cake, a Favorite for Halloween Entertaining! Makes 25 servings 4 cups sugar 8 eggs 2 cups oil, canola or safﬂower 21/2 teaspoons vanilla 4 cups ﬂour 4 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 pounds carrots, grated 2 cups nuts, chopped 21/2 raisins (optional)

8 ounces cream cheese 5 ounces butter 11/2 pounds powdered sugar 11/2 teaspoons vanilla

1) Beat the sugar and eggs together until well blended. Stir in the oil and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix the ﬂour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Combine the egg mixture. Fold in carrots, nuts and raisins. 2) Divide the batter between two (9- x 13-inch) greased baking pans. Refrigerate the batter between baking times. Bake the cakes in a moderately hot oven (350 F) for 0approximately 40 minutes. Let cool completely. 3) Bring the cream cheese and butter to room temperature. Cream the two together until smooth. Add sugar gradually, shaking it through a strainer to get rid of the lumps and beat until smooth. Add the vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until it has a good spreading consistency. Frost with cream cheese frosting.

Hearty Four Bean Chili For Autumn Days! Makes 8 to 10 servings 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, ﬁnely chopped 2 medium carrots, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar 3 tablespoons chili powder 2 tablespoons ground cumin 1 tablespoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt 1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce 1 can (15 ounces) small white beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15 ounces) light kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15 ounces) dark kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15 ounces) pinto beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup vegetable broth

1 can (4 ounces) diced mild green chillies 1 ounce unsweetened baking chocolate, chopped 1 tablespoon cider vinegar.

1) Heat oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions, carrots and bell pepper; cook and stir 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add garlic, tomato paste, brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, oregano and salt; cook and stir 1 minute. 2) Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, beans, broth, chillies, and chocolate; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in vinegar.

Grilled Pumpkin and Black Bean Burger, a Vegan Burger! Serves 4 1 tablespoon oil 1/2 cup diced red onion 1/2 cup diced red pepper 3 cloves minced garlic 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 15 ounce can black beans 1 teaspoon salt 2 minced chipotle peppers 1/4 cup sweet corn 3 tablespoon mashed pumpkin 1 cup breadcrumbs

1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional if you are avoiding nuts)

1) Dice the red onion, red pepper and mince the garlic. Heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the garlic, onion, red pepper and sweet corn then sauté for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. 2) Drain and rinse the black beans and pat dry. Place in a deep bowl. Using the back of a fork, mash about half the beans and leave the other half whole. Then add the pumpkin, cooked vegetable mixture, chipotle peppers, breadcrumbs, pecans (if using), salt, and cumin. Mix well until all ingredients are combined to desired consistency. Note, if mixture is too dry you can add a little more pumpkin. Using hands, form into four large patties and refrigerate for a half-hour. 3) Heat grill to medium-high heat. Brush grill with oil then place burgers on the grill. Cook for approximately 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Remove and serve.

Bright Smiles Shine For Babylon’s First Day Despite the cloudy conditions, Babylon School District students were shining bright as they headed back to school for the start of the 20212022 school year on Sept. 9. Administrators and teachers were on hand as the students made their way to their respective buildings.

With their backpacks filled with supplies, the kindergarten students were greeted by their teachers as they made their way to their classrooms. Newcomers to the Babylon Grade School and Babylon Elementary School were all smiles to start off the new school year. At Babylon Junior-Senior

High School, seventh grade students were also welcomed into their new buildings and had the chance to get acquainted with their teachers and classmates. As the day went on, students eased into their new schedules and routines and settled in for a productive year ahead.

Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-proﬁt organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give.

Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering with HHRM in another way, they are looking for volunteers to help at the mission with their distributions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tasks include sorting, folding, hanging on racks, rolling racks in and out of the building, helping with pantry bags on occasion and being available to help people find items for their families. They have served consistently once a month over the past 5 years, even “drive thru” style through the pandemic to serve between 100 and 150 babies each month. 1 in 4 families in New York struggles with diaper need.
