The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values
and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. approach to challenge the County’s youth to take initiative, become more civically engaged in their communities and begin a journey of personal growth. Students dedicate themselves to completing requirements in two, three or all four categories for Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition, respectively. Each category can require up to 100 or more hours of activity that must be logged and certified. In addition, students complete personal interviews in the Legislator’s office at the onset of the program and then at the completion. The program is open to all Suffolk County Youths between the ages of 13 and 18. Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District had the most award recipients in the program with ten: Armany Alfaro (Gold), Nicolas Allain (Gold), Pamela Carey (Bronze), Samantha Carey (Bronze), Sindy Alvarez Garay (Gold), Ethan Halle (Gold), Oscar Armando Hernandez (Gold), Alyssa Katwala (Silver), Priya Katwala (Gold) and Katherine

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently honored 15 local students as Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award (DYA). Earning the awards after completion of an extensive year-long program, they were each recognized with medals and certificates in a special ceremony at the Suffolk County Legislature’s William H. Rogers Building in Hauppauge. A record number of students in Legislator Donnelly’s district completed the extensive DYA requirements in this second year of the program. A total of 31 Suffolk students earned awards, with nearly half of them, the largest representation ever, from Legislative District 17. The DYA program was created by the Legislative Resolution Number 4192017. The voluntary recognition program centers on four categories: Volunteer Service, Personal Development, Exploration and Physical Fitness and focuses on a holistic

Student Serves His Tennis Dreams selection process. More than 500 hopefuls from 15 states tried out, and out of that amount, only 150 individuals were selected to advance, including Jaden himself. During the tryout and callback rounds, the officials simulated what would be required of him during a match, such as retrieving the ball from the net, rolling it to the other ball person and tossing it to the players. “As an avid tennis player, it’s an honor to be a ball person at the U.S. Open,” said Jaden. “I knew going into this process that the odds of making it were slim,
but I am so glad I made the cut; it’s very exciting to be on the same court with the greatest tennis players in the world.” It is Jaden’s goal to earn a tennis scholarship in order to further pursue both his studies and love for the sport at the collegiate level. Starting in the fall, he will go back to training five times a week in an effort to continue to improve his game. He also plans on competing in local U.S. Tennis Association tournaments.
