The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks. com, when you enter the charity code FGWIBCC20. Town of Babylon Community Development Block Grant Funding Now Available to Town of Babylon Residents for Home Improvements Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), on behalf of the Town of Babylon, is accepting applications from Town of Babylon residents for their Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Home Improvement Program. This program provides deferred payment loans (zero percent interest) to qualified low and moderate income homeowners in the Town of Babylon in order to improve housing conditions and correct housing code violations by repairing and rehabilitating health and safety hazards, including lead-based paint removal. Eligible Home Repairs / Improvements can include, but are not limited to, electrical improvements, accessibility improvements, insulation and energy conservation measures, new heating systems, new roofs, new windows and doors, plumbing, structural improvements and vinyl siding. Maximum income limits will apply when assessing program eligibility. Program Guidelines may be reviewed at www.cdcli.org. A fully completed application, together with all supporting documentation, must be submitted. Keep Devices In Top Shape And Running Well The need for reliable technology has never been more apparent. When the world hit the proverbial pause button in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, technology was crucial to keeping people connected to the world around them, helping people maintain some semblance of normalcy as it pertained to work and education.

Students and families who have invested in various electronics to help keep their household running should understand that maintenance is required to keep these devices running effectively. These tips can help keep gadgets in tip-top shape. • Protect devices from extreme temperatures. Electronic devices are

designed to operate under an array of conditions, but pushing those conditions can result in damage. Most devices are fine between temperatures of 32 F and 90 F. But don’t leave electronics in the car, in a sunny window or outdoors. devices • Clean regularly. Refer to the user’s manual for the proper ways to clean the devices you rely on each day. Some may require a specific cleaner or a particular fabric to help ensure the device isn’t scratched or damaged. Spray cleaners on a cloth and then wipe off devices, rather than spraying cleaners directly on electronics. Try a can of compressed air to remove dust from crevices or vents.

• Invest in a surge protector. While surge protector power strips multiply the number of available outlets, they also serve a more important purpose. These devices will cut off power to plugged-in electronics if there is a power surge, helping to prevent damage. • Don’t overcharge. It’s essential to have gadgets charged and ready to go, but overcharging can reduce battery life. Do not leave devices charging overnight. Battery University ™, a free educational website offering battery information, says that nickel- and lithiumbased batteries should be stored with a 40 percent state-of-charge. This level minimizes age-related capacity loss and keeps the battery in good condition.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly Delivers Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) has procured and personally delivered more than 8,500 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including cloth face masks, gloves and hand sanitizer, to local libraries, community groups, food pantries, churches and schools to assist them during the COVID-19 pandemic. The safe reopening of community spaces has been a top priority of Legislator Donnelly, and he has been working closely

with Suffolk County’s Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to dispense these critical supplies. Legislator Donnelly has made deliveries to the recently reopened North Babylon, Half Hollow Hills and South Huntington Public Libraries, Tri-Community and Youth Agency in Huntington, St. Elizabeth’s Church in Melville and Meals on Wheels. Legislator Donnelly was also able to honor the requests of the Deer Park and South Huntington School

Districts to provide PPE to students and staff as they prepare for the 2020-2021 school year. “Our exceptional and caring local organizations and schools are working hard to ensure a safe return for all, and I am pleased to be able to play a role in helping them take steps to return to some much needed normalcy,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank County Executive Steve Bellone and all those involved for ensuring the availability of these critical supplies.”

But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them ofﬂine, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center.
