Helping Hand Rescue Mission www.helpinghandsrescuemission.org
56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. She has also served as Pastor of Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills from 2011-2019, however she resigned from that position in January of 2020 to devote more of her time to the work of HHRM. She is a wife to her husband Andrew and mom & stepmom to five amazing kids. How does HHRM serve others? Feeding The Hungry: HHRM serves approximately 200-300 families per week with non-perishable items and fresh produce, fruit, meat, eggs, milk and bread. Since March 21, 2020, they have given out over 27,000 food bags to people in need on Long Island. HHRM partners with many schools, organizations, temples, churches, youth organizations, civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and
School Supply Distribution: Every child deserves to have the supplies they need for their education, feel confident in a room with their peers and be prepared for their school year. This non-profit gathers and distributes school supplies to local children that are in need. Baby Blessings: Baby Blessings is a part of HHRM that focuses on providing families with children under 3 years old with diapers, baby clothes, other baby supplies and a brunch! Baby Blessings is hosted at Huntington Assembly of God every third Tuesday of the month. HHRM is so thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible. Community Closet: HHRM runs something called the Community Closet, which provides new and gently used seasonallyappropriate clothing to anyone in need during it’s hours of operation. Appropriate clothing can be a genuinely difficult expense for families, especially since most have children that are always growing. Helping Hand Rescue Mission also holds various other outreach programs, some of which are seasonal. There are many ways you can volunteer with, donate to or receive help from HHRM. NEWS AROUND THE TOWN West Babylon Fire Commissioner Honored Following Presidency On the afternoon of August 15th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso had the pleasure of recognizing John Manzi as the outgoing President of the Suffolk County Fire District Officers Association. John is also an Ex-Captain and current Commissioner of the West Babylon Volunteer Fire Department. During his tenure from 2019-2020, Manzi worked to secure better equipment and
environments for our Fire and EMS personnel across the County, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic. His hard work and dedication to his own Department and Suffolk County as a whole are certainly commendable, as evidenced by the large number of dignitaries who took the time to speak of John’s accomplishments. Also on hand to help honor Commissioner Manzi were Suffolk County Legislators Kevin McCaffrey and Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone,
Deputy Commissioner of Suffolk County Fire Rescue Pat Beckley, New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, State Assemblyman and Association member Joe DeStefano, former Legislator and Association member Rudy Sunderman, and a representative of State Senator Phil Boyle’s Office, as well as West Babylon Fire District Commissioner William Klein, Chief Michael Vergano, Ex-Chiefs Scott Carrigan and Christine Manzi, and Ex-Captain Brendan Klein.

Sixth Annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk Set for Saturday, September 11th The Sixth Annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, September 11th, beginning at 9 a.m. at Jones Beach Field 1. The event, which has raised more than $180,000 since its inception, is held annually to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opioid overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. John and Jody Brower, the parents of John Brower, Jr., formed the foundation in 2015 to raise awareness of drug abuse, and to help raise funds to end the opioid epidemic on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers
were impressed by the organization’s dedication to helping those struggling with addiction. They decided to target the foundation’s fundraising efforts to support life-saving programs at Outreach and other Long Island organizations. John Venza, vice president for adolescent and residential services at Outreach, said, “We are especially excited for the John Brower, Jr., 5K Walk this year. We’re proud to be able to partner once again with the extraordinary Brower family, whose dedication to eradicating the heroin epidemic continues to inspire us. New Staff Begin Journey With North Babylon Schools
The North Babylon Union Free School District welcomed 17 new staff members to the district community in preparations for the 2021-2022 school year. From Aug. 24-25, the teachers participated in the district’s annual new teacher orientation to start their new journey as members of the North Babylon family.
During the course of two days, teachers learned the districts practices, initiatives, curriculum overview and expectations through a series of workshops. The teachers also met administrators and directors. The district is proud to welcome new staff Roberto Aquilino, Mikaela Brightman,
Pamela Falletta, Sara Erin Hackett, Michelle Hernandez, Amanda Liantonio, Jennifer Margulis, Michael Martino, Amy Michalopolous, Fredrika Miller, Amanda Nieto, Abby Santora, Melanie Shayowitz, Carly Spadafora, Michelle Statfeld, Gaetano Vaccaro and Rakeem Vanterpool.

North Babylon Appoints New Director Of Science
The North Babylon Union Free School District is proud to announce that Fredrika Miller is the district’s new K-12 director of science. The North Babylon resident comes to the district after serving the Wyandanch School District for 20 years. There, she held the position of science department coordinator, science teacher, science laboratory technician at the Milton L. Olive Middle School and then living environment teacher at Wyandanch Memorial High School. Ms. Miller also held other leadership roles, including dean of students for the Milton L. Olive Middle School. Prior to her time at Wyandanch, she was also a life and science and physical science teacher at I.S.
FREDRIKA MILLER 5 - The Walter Crowley Intermediate School in Elmhurst and a biology teacher at Bay Shore High School. Ms. Miller holds two New York State teaching certifications, including secondary level biology and general science, and a school district
administrator certification. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in life science/pre-med from New York Institute of Technology. From there, she went on to earn her Master of Science degree in secondary education from Dowling College. With strong family roots in the North Babylon community, Ms. Miller is pleased to be part of the district at a professional level. “My goal is to bring together the school and community through Community Engagement Efforts, working together to promote progressive education in the area of science, while celebrating the cultures and diversity that make up the North Babylon school district.”
BABYLON VILLAGE ARTS COUNCIL RECOGNIZES POETS - On the evening of August 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey met with the Babylon Village Arts Council and Suffolk County Poet Laureate Barbara Southard at the Babylon Gazebo across from Argyle Lake to recognize the winners of the Council’s Poetry Contest. Terri Muuss, Linda Trott Dickman, and JR Turek placed in the competition, and received awards from Legislator McCaffrey and the Arts Council. Poet Laureate Barbara Southard also received awards from Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams and Legislator McCaffrey for her work in promoting and finding innovative ways to grow the arts during a pandemic during her term, which began in 2019 and ends this year. Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation Awards Grant To Montauk Point Lighthouse feasibility and engineering studies to determine the causes and extent of the damage. “For centuries, the lighthouse has been exposed to the most extreme weather conditions,” said Nick Racanelli, construction expert and MHS Board member. “We found that the lantern and its metal work had begun to deteriorate, allowing water to pour into the cavity between the inner and outer walls of the tower, where it froze and thawed. This led to cracking, bulging and spalling of the historic sandstone, which was aggravated by previous repairs that used hard cement, further weakening the stone.” The MHS Board made the decision to proceed immediately with a full restoration, before the integrity of the 18th-century tower was compromised. They completed the first phase of work in 2020, repairing the metal work to minimize further water infiltration. The second phase of work calls for stripping the structure of its many layers of existing coatings, repointing all the joints with lime-putty mortar, and repairing the damaged stone and brickwork. “Phase Two is the most extensive and expensive phase of the restoration, and this is where the Gardiner Foundation will make a huge difference,” said Racanelli. “Getting a large grant like this allows us to complete these vital repairs, while continuing to keep our museum open and offer our visitors interesting and exciting programming. It makes all the difference.” “The history of the Montauk Lighthouse as an original welcoming beacon to New York coupled with its striking presence makes an iconic symbol not only of Long Island but of hope and safe harbor to millions,” said Kathryn Curran, Executive Director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation. “The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation's mission is to promote the advancement of our regional history. We are delighted to be working with the Montauk Historical Society on the restoration of this important historic structure.” Established in 1987, the Robert David Lion
Gardiner Foundation primarily supports the study of Long Island history. Robert David Lion Gardiner was, until his death in August 2005, the 16th Lord of the Manor of Gardiner’s Island, NY. The Gardiner family and their descendants have owned Gardiner’s Island since 1639, obtained as part of a royal grant from King Charles I of England. The Montauk Historical Society (MHS) has announced receipt of a grant of $390,700 from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for the restoration of the iconic 225-year-old sandstone and brick Montauk Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse, commissioned in 1792 by President George Washington, was built in 1796 and has served as an aid to navigation ever since. Citing high maintenance costs, the U.S. Coast Guard considered abandoning the historic structure and replacing it with a skeletal tower and light. Instead, they agreed to sell it to the Montauk Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Coast Guard still maintains the beacon, visible over 19 nautical miles, but care of the grounds, and maintenance and repair of the buildings, are the sole responsibility of MHS. “We are able to fund the everyday interior and exterior upkeep of the lighthouse through entry fees, gift-shop sales, and private donations,” said Dick White, MHS Treasurer and Chair of the Lighthouse Committee. “But when substantial restoration work needs to be done, we have to seek other ways to fund it. We are immensely grateful to the Gardiner Foundation for stepping up to help us save this National Historic Landmark.” Construction professionals on the MHS Board had been monitoring worsening water damage on the exterior and interior of the lighthouse tower, and in 2016 and 2017, they commissioned
The Sixth Annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, September 11th, beginning at 9 a.m. at Jones Beach Field 1. The event, which has raised more than $180,000 since its inception, is held annually to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opioid overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. John and Jody Brower, the parents of John Brower, Jr., formed the foundation in 2015 to raise awareness of drug abuse, and to help raise funds to end the opioid
epidemic on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to helping those struggling with addiction. They decided to target the foundation’s fundraising efforts to support lifesaving programs at Outreach and other Long Island organizations. John Venza, vice president for adolescent and residential services at Outreach, said, “We are especially excited for the John Brower, Jr., 5K Walk this year. We’re proud to be able to partner once again with the extraordinary Brower family, whose dedication to eradicating the heroin epidemic continues to inspire us.
