JAMIE Join Us In Welcoming

The North Babylon School District kicked off the summer with its exciting and interactive STEAMy Art Camp that was held at the North Babylon High School. Students from grades 3-5 explored science, technology, education, art and math with a focus on art. They investigated, invented and played while creating a series of artworks. In addition, they worked on projects such as crafting drawing-robots, toothpick towers and dinosaur sculptures. Artists from the Long Island Children’s Museum visited the camp and led students in innovative workshops. Through these activities, they learned ancient cave paintings and the art of their preservation, separation techniques used by criminologists and the structure and function of feathers. The camp wrapped up with a celebration and an art gallery that featured student work.

Mr. Vic D’Amore’s career started in a most unusual way, with an afﬂiction... His feet… They are always tapping. While in ninth grade at St. Agnes High School, Sister Mary Mercy noticed a young man whose feet seemed to be in perpetual motion. She called it an afﬂiction. Vic mentioned that he danced, and Sister Mercy dragged him off to see Ray and Davenie Heatherton. (For those of you not old enough to recognize the name, he was the Merry Mailman on TV.) Vic was now thrown into the theater department and, by his junior year, was asked by Mr. Heatherton to choreograph the high school show. By his senior year, he was asked to choreograph and direct it.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.
