Town of Babylon Hosts Annual Soldier Ride Event

On Friday, July 16, the Town of Babylon (TOB) hosted its annual Soldier Ride event to show support for service members who have been injured in the line of duty. The event

featured TOB Supervisor Rich Schaffer as he kicked off the event with an opening ceremony at the Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst, which also featured comments by

New York Attorney General Letitia James. All Proceeds from event will go to the Wounded Warrior Project and to Help Injured Veterans.

Community Invited To Help Feed Our Neighbors The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). At all locations, there will be a contactless drive-thru area, as well as collection bins, set up from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as follows:

Troop 1421 Welcomes Newest Eagle Scout

On Saturday, July 10th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined in celebrating Jarred Navarro as he became Lindenhurst’s newest

Eagle Scout- joining a long list of homegrown Eagle Scouts who have dedicated themselves to giving back to their community. For his project, Jarred constructed

an informational board to be used by students and staff in the Lindenhurst High School’s nature garden.

External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs. Anyone interested should call Western Suffolk BOCES to meet with a counselor. Call 631-667-6000, Ext. 327 to register.

Legislator Tom Donnelly Honors North Babylon Nurse Roxana Sherrill As Healthcare Hero

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently recognized Roxana Sherrill, RN, MS, COHN-S, a nurse at North Shore University Hospital and a clinical professor of Nursing at Stony Brook University School of Nursing who went above and beyond during the COVID-19 pandemic, as his 2021 Healthcare Hero. Throughout the pandemic, Ms. Sherrill covered 10 to 12 hour shifts, six days a week at the hospital. Outside of those physically and emotionally exhausting shifts, Ms. Sherrill and her students volunteered at Stony Brook Hospital, assembling and bringing bags of coffee and homemade masks and assisting the nurses by making phone calls to families about their loved ones. As soon as the

vaccine became available, she taught her nursing students how to administer the COVID vaccines at both Stony Brook and SUNY Old Westbury sites. In addition, Ms. Sherrill counseled co-workers on how to deal with the consequences of COVID-19. She also aided family and friends and watched out for her elderly homebound neighbors, bringing them food, making vaccine appointments for them and driving them to their appointments. “Time and again, no matter what the circumstances or what professional, personal or emotional challenges she was faced with, Roxana Sherrill selflessly put others needs above her own, making her a true hero,” said Legislator Donnelly. “It

was a privilege to recognize her for work and her service to the community.” In a resolution passed earlier this year by the Suffolk County Legislature, the month of June was designated by Suffolk County as “Healthcare Heroes Month” to acknowledge and honor the frontline healthcare workers who inspire the entire community with their exceptional service and selfless contributions. Each Legislator selected one person as their healthcare hero and their names and accomplishments were read into the record at the June 22 general meeting. Legislator Donnelly presented Ms. Sherrill with a County Proclamation at Phelps Lane Park on June 24.

The county has made about 8.5 acres of land available for them, which their railroad operates on. In fulﬁllment of the public trust use of park land, Long Island Live Steamers hosts visitor rides on our Public Run Days typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. There is no charge for rides on Run Days, however they accept donations of any size. Their operation is solely funded by donations.

Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27 or exit 67 off the LIE) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonproﬁt organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!

Besides their ground track, they also have a dual gauge high line which features an elevated track, which runs through the forest. Rider Rules: For the Ground Line track, kids must be able to walk on their own in order to ride. For The high line track, riders must be at least 40” Tall to ride. Reservations must be made to reserve a birthday party with the LI Live Steamers, however there is no limit to how many people can attend. Attendees can bring their own food and/ or cake (pizza parties are popular) and the organization provides picnic tables, that when sitting at you will have a great view of the action as multiple trains pass by! NEWS AROUND THE TOWN Gilgo Beach Marina Named For Congressman King

On Saturday, June 26th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined the Town of Babylon for a small ceremony dedicating the marina at Gilgo Beach as the “Congressman Pete King Marina.” The marina will serve as a reminder of his work, particularly the substantial efforts he made to secure Hurricane Sandy relief totaling $60.4 billion for Long Island’s ravaged south shore communities. With that same fortitude, Congressman King became a champion of the military, its veterans, first responders, and many more of our most vulnerable populations.

The renaming serves as a beacon of gratitude for the many times in which Congressman King would cross the aisle to best serve his constituents over his nearly three decades in office. Babylon Elementary Students Say “Be Pool Smart” Through Art!

On June 25th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey presented certificates to Babylon Elementary School kindergartners Noah Smith, Violet Uttendorfer, Romely Tzerembo, Alicia Gimberlein, and Theodore Baxter for placing in

the Suffolk County Legislature’s Be Pool Smart Poster Contest! The contest, designed to promote water safety at home and in open water, has been held annually since 2007 and is aimed at drowning prevention. Violet, who is holding

her poster, was one of the competition’s finalists! Babylon Elementary School teacher Ms. Elizabeth Losito and Principal Travis Davey were also present for the ceremony, and did an amazing job getting their students involved in this initiative.

At all locations, there will be a contactless drive-thru area, as well as collection bins, set up from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as follows:

On Thursday, July 15th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey honored Karen Vassiliou, of Lindenhurst, for her selection as Legislative District 14 Healthcare Hero of the Year! Karen was born and raised in Lindenhurst, and knew from an early age that she wanted to grow up to help people. Prior to COVID-19, Karen served in Good Samaritan Hospital’s cardiac telemetry unit, however she began work with the neuro step down unit in March of 2020. This transition made her one part of an amazing team of hospital staff that worked to convert medical floors and telemetry floors to Intensive care units to help accommodate the needs of the community during the pandemic, much of which was done by utilizing team nursing and working extra twelve hours shifts for
