Consumer Participation On Scientific Peer Review Panels

The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs’ (CDMRP), Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) consumer advocate recently participated in the evaluation of research applications submitted to the BCRP. Joanne Marquardt was nominated for participation in the program by the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. As a consumer reviewer, Joanne was a full voting member, (along with prominent scientists) at meetings to help determine how the $150 million appropriated by Congress for Fiscal Year 2022 will be spent on breast cancer research. Consumer reviewers are asked to represent the collective view of patients by preparing comments on the impact of the research on issues such as diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life. When commenting on serving as a consumer reviewer, Joanne said

that , “It was an honor to participate in insuring that breast cancer research has an impact that will transition from the laboratory to the patient. Consumer advocates and scientists have worked together in this unique partnership to evaluate the merit of research applications since FY92. COL Sarah B. Goldman, Director of the CDMRP,

expressed her appreciation for the consumer advocates’ hard work. “Integrating consumer perspectives into our decision-making process brings energy and focus to our research programs. Researchers applying to the BCRP propose to end breast cancer for Service members, Veterans, and the general public by funding innovative, highimpact research through a partnership of scientists and consumers. Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum recently released 700 Painted Lady butterflies at its annual Butterfly Release, aimed to educate Long Islanders on the benefits the beloved insects bring to the environment, as well as support the species. Led by Fred Hoffmann, Pinelawn’s Grounds Supervisor, who manages the 500-acre property, over 300 community members gathered on Sunday, July 17 in the park’s vibrant Rose Garden to learn more about how these beautiful pollinators contribute to the park’s landscape. “Beyond the butterflies’ obvious beauty, they also play a pivotal role in supporting the landscape,” said Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “Butterflies act as important pollinators that allow our many gardens, and those of the surrounding community, to prosper. In return, we make an effort to support the species by providing an optimal environment for them, including milkweed, echinacea (Purple Coneflower), and over 24 acres of natural meadows.” As part of an ongoing program offering free events for Pinelawn families and the Long Island community, the organization recognizes the significance of butterflies among the bereaved. Kristyn Hovanec, Director of Community Outreach at Pinelawn, “Butterflies have long been a symbol of those we love who have passed on. This event not only educates the families about the importance of butterflies within our ecosystem, but also allows them to feel connected to those they are missing.” In addition to the onsite event which included fun butterfly arts & crafts for the children, Pinelawn also visited The Bristal Assisted

Long Island Cares provides emergency food and supplies to 250,000 Long Islanders suffering from food insecurity. In addition to the food bank location in Hauppauge and the more than 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other locations it provides food to, Long Island Cares operates five of its own food pantries, in Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, Hampton Bays, Freeport and Bethpage. Long Island ‘s foodinsecure seniors are the focus of the Senior Resource Fair taking place Friday, August 12 at Long Island Cares’ Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge. The fair is co-sponsored by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank and PSEG Long Island. The purpose of the fair is three-fold: provide increased access to nutritious food, offer takehome fresh produce at a special “farmer’s market,” and expose seniors to advocacy efforts on their behalf and the numerous resources available to them. The event takes place 9 a.m. – noon at the Center for Community Engagement, 75 Davids Drive, Hauppauge. PSEG Long Island’s ‘Power To Feed Long Island’ Returns To Fight Hunger PSEG Long Island, Island Harvest Food Bank and Stop & Shop has kicked off PSEG Long Island’s second annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive. Seven PSEG Long Island Power to Feed Long Island employee ambassadors, along with anti-hunger advocates and government officials gathered at the Stop & Shop in Massapequa to donate food and money, and call on Long Islanders to take action to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, collection drives will be set up at several Stop & Shop supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate non-perishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 30,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Island families struggling to put food on their tables. This goal recognizes Island Harvest’s 30th anniversary this year. “We are kicking off our second annual Power to Feed Long Island campaign with Island Harvest and Stop & Shop because hundreds of thousands of our neighbors still need our help,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Last year, PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island created a venue for Long Islanders to help fight food insecurity, and they responded with bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food for their neighbors. Thanks to their generosity, we exceeded our 21,000-meal goal in 2021. This year, we are proud to donate and we encourage everyone to continue to be part of the solution, because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. This initiative is just one of the many ways PSEG Long Island and our employees support our communities.” Hundreds of thousands

of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest. Over the past two and a half years, the pandemic has put a significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. In fiscal year 2020-2021, Island Harvest Food Bank distributed more than 18 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 15 million meals – to Long Islanders facing food insecurity. That’s an 83%

increase over fiscal year 2018-2019. “While summer is often a time of plenty for most of us, many Long Island families continue to struggle to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Island Harvest Food Bank is once again pleased to team up with PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for the second annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection events this summer to help address the needs of Long Islanders who continue to struggle with food insecurity. We are exceptionally grateful to PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for their caring and generosity now and throughout the year.” PSEG Long Island also kicked off the campaign with a $1,000 donation. Combined with the Stop & Shop gift cards, these donations make up the first

4,000 meals collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals. Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate non-perishable food items. Collection bins and a contactless, drive-thru, drop-off option will be available at each location. Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.” According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt

your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to it.” Parents can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental

health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare. United Way Of Long Island Kicks Off Annual Stuff-A-Bus Campaign

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that seasonal boat slips at the Robert Moses State Park East Marina are available for rent. Interested boaters can obtain an application to reserve a slip by visiting the Robert Moses State Park Office. The Robert Moses State Park East Marina has forty (40) boat slips, which are available from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. East Marina Seasonal slips will be available on a first come, first serve basis, and will be assigned by Robert Moses State Park. In the event the marina has reached capacity, you will be placed on the wait

list. A seasonal boat slip costs $50 per foot. Slips can accommodate vessels up to 40 feet long with a maximum beam of 14 feet. Each slip has potable water, two cleats, and electric hook-up. The power source is 50 amps (50/125). Boaters must supply their own ropes, adapters, and extension cords. Each slip includes one vehicle parking permit. No overnight visitor parking will be permitted. Boaters who rent a slip during the 2022 season will automatically be renewed for the 2023 season. Robert Moses State Park is located at the south end of the Robert Moses Causeway and

If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. Continuing every Friday throughout the summer, Urban Air Lake Grove will host Glow Night with a one of kind, glow-in-the-dark experience. The Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) board of trustees are excited to announce that the organization has signed a long-term lease with the Ward Melville Heritage Organization to house the non-profit organization’s first physical facility. The 8,800 square foot Education and Cultural Center (ECC) is located at 97 Main St, Stony Brook, NY in Stony Brook Village Center. “We are thrilled that LIMEHOF has found a permanent home in such a wonderful location” said Ernie Canadeo, Chairman, LIMEHOF. “We thank the Ward Melville Heritage Organization for leasing us the building. It’s in great condition and we’re looking forward to creating world-class displays that showcase Long Island’s rich and diverse musical and entertainment history in new and exciting ways. We will feature different and exciting exhibits, displays, videos and education offerings that will make our center a dynamic place for people of all ages to visit on a regular basis.
