You may recall my name being mentioned from time to time in a handful of articles, but I’ve never been given the opportunity to put fin to keyboard and “step in” for In Step - until today. From what I hear, my predecessor, the beloved Buddy the Betta, was quite the regular contributor, even having his name grace the staff box as a guest columnist for a period of time. While I’m certainly no Buddy, I’d like to think I have my own unique charm to bring to the paper. Still a baby by betta fish standards, I’ve resided with my human for nearly two years already, and still going strong! Our story began back in November of 2016, following the passing of Buddy just a few days prior to Thanksgiving. As I darted to and fro in my tiny

betta bowl at the local pet store, a mere speck of a fish, I spotted the girl who would come to adopt me. As she peered through the plastic, fascinated by my deep blue hue and pointy nose, I waved my sheer fins ecstatically and stared intently into her face. It was love at first sight. Fast forward approximately one year, eight months, one week and four days later {fish keep impeccable time}, and our lives have been enriched by each other’s company - well, on the rare occasions she’s actually home of course. Most days have been spent examining my minithermometer {still waiting on a replacement for that, by the way}, combing the gravel for rogue bits of food and lunging out of the water at any who dare peer too closely into my bowl. And then there’s bath time, the dreaded uprooting of my dear plant and redecorating of my abode. As soon as I see the big yellow scoop come out, I flatten myself against the side of the container and refuse
to budge. Feeding times are another nuisance, as my human still insists on crushing my pellets into bits, forcing me to chase my tail for crumbs before they settle on the bottom, never to be seen again. But alas, I’m just a tiny curmudgeon of a fish, always looking for something to gripe about. Truth is, we are a match made in heaven, both preferring our solitude and possessing a bit of that OCD need to clean up our surroundings constantly. At the end of the day, she waves goodnight and turns off my desk lamp, and we part as friends . . . until the morning comes, and sleepyhead decides to hit snooze a few too many times, delaying my breakfast. Ah, the life of a fish. Eat, sleep, swim laps. Repeat. And on Fridays in August when my mommy dearest is drained of ideas for her column, I write. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, dear readers. Hope the rest of your summer goes swimmingly.

They are part of Girl Scout Troop 2780 in North Babylon and have been Girl Scouts for nine years. For their Silver award the girls decided to take part in sewing over 120 whimsical pillowcases to benefit Ryan’s Case for Smiles. An organization aimed at creating an emotionally uplifting boost for kids in hospitals. These pillowcases enable the kids who are in hospitals or are dealing with medical trauma to better cope with the experience;
Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes to You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon serves an abundance of people across Long Island.
Project9Line is a non-profit that aims to help members of the military, both active and retired, reintegrate successfully into civilian life. They offer multiple volunteer opportunities and are holding Summer Wellness Programs free of charge for all active military and veterans including: Yoga on the Beach every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. at Robert Moses Field 2, and Reiki Level 1 on Sunday, August 19th, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at their headquarters in Islip. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman and event organizer Jackie Gordon and the rest of the Town Board welcomed over 1,400 riders to Town Hall for the 2018 Soldier Ride. The event, a 25-mile bicycle ride that begins at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and ends at Overlook Beach, has raised around one million dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project in 11 years. Other notable elected officials were in attendance, including Congressman Peter King, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini, Suffolk County Sherriff Errol Toulon, several New York State Senators, Assemblypersons and local village officials.
Wounded Warrior Project CEO Michael Linnington was also in attendance and spoke at the morning ceremony. “Councilwoman Gordon and our staff continue to raise the bar for this event every year,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Participation keeps getting bigger and bigger, which speaks volumes about how great this event is. Thank you to the Wounded Warrior Project for being great partners and the work that they do,” he added. Joe McDonald, a building inspector with the Town, is a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He, along with the help of his department, raised over $6,000 for the event before riding with his fellow Warriors. “The amount of money raised by Joe McDonald is
a testament of how much respect the people within the Town of Babylon have for our Veterans,” said Councilwoman Gordon. “In the 11 years since we have had this event, we’ve raised over a million dollars that have gone to helping Veterans who have made enormous sacrifices. As a fellow Veteran, I’m honored to organize this event each year,” she added. Over 50 Wounded Warriors led the pack of bicyclists out of Town Hall after a flyover by a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter. Residents lined the course from Sunrise Highway to the entrance of Overlook Beach, where a barbeque hosted by local emergency response departments and sponsors welcomed the riders.

Special Project Continued From 11 how-to classes to their fellow scouts in North Babylon ranging in ages 5-16. By hosting classes the girls were able to get over a 100 yards of fabric donated. Which enabled them to make so many pillowcases. During this project, the girls learned all about a dying trade; they learned how to cut, pin and set up the sewing machine as well as how to use the sewing machine effortlessly. Through their efforts they were able to sew and deliver over 100 pillowcases. The Long Island liaison for the organization, Samantha
Bunster was extremely helpful in helping the girls attain their goal and deliver the pillowcases. This project meant a great deal to the girls as they learned many things along the way such as the importance of communication, community, delegation, preparation, modifying skill levels, time management and team work. They truly enjoyed doing this project and feel good that they were able to bring smiles to many future children’s faces as well as hopefully uplift some of these children’s days that may be very difficult.

Walk in the Park & Picnic Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, will be hosting its annual Walk in the Park & Family Picnic, on Sunday, September 23rd at the Holtsville Ecology Park.
