TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

One of the concerns about telehealth noted by representatives for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the difficulty of monitoring health care providers who may not have patients’ best interests in mind. This can lead to certain problems, including overprescribing medications and doctors offering medical advice to patients in states where the physicians are not licensed to practice. Speaking only with physicians who have already treated you is one way to avoid this potential pitfall associated with telehealth services.

Social distancing guidelines encouraging people to stay in their homes as much as possible led many to wonder what to do in regard to visiting their physicians. Telehealth is one option people may want to explore. Sometimes referred to as “telemedicine,” telehealth enables patients to speak with their physicians via phone, tablet or conferencing apps such as Zoom. This can help patients and their physicians reduce their risk for exposure to viruses such as COVID-19, but also other conditions that can weaken their immune systems and, as a result, make them more vulnerable to illness. As helpful as telehealth can be while social distancing restrictions remain in place,

numbers, and how to call 9-1-1. • Assemble a disaster supplies kit with food, water, medical supplies, battery-powered radio and NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, batteries, flashlights, and other items that will allow you to get by for 3 days after a hurricane hits. • Gather important documents such as birth and marriage certificates, social security cards, passports, wills, deeds, and financial and insurance records. Store them in a fire and flood safe location or safe deposit box. Prepare Your Home before the Storm • Install permanent wooden or metal storm shutters or board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood. • Install metal straps or hurricane clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. • Trim trees and clear rain gutters and downspouts. • Plan ahead for protection of pets and livestock. Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly Honors Two Veterans as 17th District Seniors of the Year

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) honored Kenneth “Ken” Carlson of Melville and Robert “Bob” Santo of Huntington Station as Legislative District 17 Seniors of the Year at an outdoor, appropriately socially-distanced meeting of the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244 on July 8 at the Greenlawn Knights of Columbus Hall. Mr. Carlson, a veteran of the United States Army from 1968 to 1972, served in Vietnam and received

the Bronze Star. With the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244, he serves in the Color Guard and is the Post’s parade organizer and notary. In addition, Mr. Carlson is an active member of the Strathmore Civic Association where he is currently treasurer. A veteran who served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970, Mr. Santo is a former 10-year Commander and current Financial Officer of the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244. Mr. Santo is also a

liaison with the SailAhead Program, a therapeutic sailing platform that helps PTSD-suffering veterans and brings awareness to Post Traumatic Stress and Veteran Suicide. “It was a privilege to recognize Ken Carlson and Bob Santo, two outstanding and deserving veterans, as Legislative District 17 Seniors of the Year for 2020,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank them for their past service to this nation and their continued service to our community.”
