Families without accommodation near a hospital can endure long drives, lost jobs, worried siblings left at home and for some, no place to sleep. They’re far from family and friends who give them support. However, Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) New York Metro, a 501c3 non-profit organization, keeps families seeking medical treatment for their sick children near the care they need and the families they love. The mission of RMHC New York Metro is to build a community of compassionate care by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of sick children and their families. “Since its inception in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House has served an average of 1,000 families per year,” said Matt Campo, CEO, RMHC NY Metro. “We’ve given back 27,000 hours to the families to spend with their child that might have otherwise been wasted driving back and forth to hotels, to eat meals, or to do laundry. Everything a family needs for long term accommodation can be found in our house.” RMHC New York Metro runs a variety of programs, dating back to 1986 when the 42-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park opened. Located immediately adjacent to the Cohen Children’s Hospital, providing the comforts of a home and compassionate care that meet the unique needs of families with sick children. The organization also operates a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which gives temporary respite to families who would otherwise spend hours and even days at their children’s bedside. The corresponding Hospitality Cart, staffed by volunteers, brings refreshments and joy to the hospital rooms of children receiving hospital
care. RMHC New York Metro thrives on the participation of its volunteers from across Long Island to help families focus on what is most important: the health and well-being of their children. These children and families rely on the support of volunteers to make their days easier, and volunteers contribute to a variety of meaningful and important activities every day.
Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Town Clerk Gerry Compitello recently sworein five new park rangers who will serve within the Town’s Department of Public Safety. Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman and Chairman of Public Safety Terence McSweeney were also in attendance for the ceremony. The five new park rangers will now be fulltime employees assigned to help patrol parks facilities year-round. These new hires are in addition to the ten part-time rangers already on staff,
and now ensure that the town has seven day a week coverage around the clock. In addition to the new park rangers being sworn-in, seven new field supervisors were sworn-in to the bay constable division. “The public safety of our residents is of utmost importance not just to me, but to all of my colleagues who serve on the town board,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “While we have a great working relationship with our law enforcement partners at the Suffolk County Police Department, we are also glad to now bring on these new rangers who will help
ensure the round-theclock safety of our parks facilities, especially during the busy summer months.” Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Terence McSweeney added, “I’d like to remind all of our residents that the Town of Babylon Department of Public Safety operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our dedicated public safety officers, park rangers and bay constables are always here to help our community.” For non-emergency situations, the Department of Public Safety can be reached by calling (631) 422-7600.
Volunteers also bring joy to families through the Family Room program, opened in 2013 and serving 3,500 families every year, as well as their Meals from the Heart and Treats from the Heart Programs, which invites individuals into the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House to cook a homemade meal and delicious desserts for families. Throughout this month, you will learn about more about RMHC New York Metro, including profiles of some of their volunteers, the grassroots leadership coming from Long Island Communities that helps support the organization and the aggressive expansion plans for Suffolk County to help families there that are in need. vibrator. Adjacent to the doctor’s laboratory, his young and energetic wife Catherine tends to their newborn daughter - and wonders exactly what is going on in the next room. On Friday, July 15, 2022, the Town of Babylon welcomed the Wounded Warrior Project back to Town Hall for the 15th annual Babylon Soldier Ride. Hosted by Councilman and Veterans Advisory Chair DuWayne Gregory, this was the first time in two years that the town has been able to host a full community ride as was done prior to the pandemic. This year, the town helped raise over $100,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project with some of the proceeds going to Project9Line, an Islip-based nonprofit that serves veterans here in Suffolk County. About 30
wounded warriors from across the country, and over 1,000 members of our community participated in the 25-mile ride from Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst to Overlook Beach out on the barrier island. Among the riders was Supervisor Schaffer, Councilman Gregory, and many of our government partners from the county and state. “It is crucial for us to provide support for the brave men and women who have risked so much for our freedom,” said Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “The pandemic forced us to reduce the size and capacity

Babylon Soldier Ride Back In Action for First Time Since 2019 of this event over the last two years, but as you can see by the amount raised and the turnout of riders, the support for our nation’s veterans is as strong as it has ever been here in the Town of Babylon,” he added. Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Local Senior Advocate Schedule
Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature Kevin McCaffrey, who represents Lindenhurst and the surrounding area in the Legislature, is proud to be part of a long line of first responders in his family and is excited at the opportunity to join Tunnel to Towers and his Brother Knights in helping the cause. “I proudly support the efforts of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and their work to honor our greatest heroes in veterans and first responders, as well as their families, and have for many years. This block party is a tremendous example of our communities stepping up to help those who do so much to serve and protect us.” Presiding Officer McCaffrey and Belfast owner Dave Crowe kicked off the fundraising effort this year with matching donations of $1,000. United States Congressman Andrew Garbarino added, “Tunnel to Towers is an incredible organization dedicated to caring for our heroes and their families. I am proud to support them and their mission in honor of Stephen Siller and the many 9/11 first responders who risked everything for their fellow Americans.”
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is named after New York City Firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller, who made the ultimate sacrifice as a member of the FDNY’s Squad 1 on September 11th, 2001. Stephen was not assigned to work on September 11th, but upon hearing the news that a plane had struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, knew he had to go to work and help. Stephen, who was on his way to play golf with his brothers, turned and headed for his firehouse. He grabbed his gear and set out for Manhattan, where he faced a closed Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 pounds of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others. He would leave behind a great wife, five wonderful children, a devoted extended family, and friends. From that day, Stephen’s family has set out to care for other first responder and military families in need. To date, they have raised over $250 million dollars, which has been used to secure nearly 500 mortgage free homes. Many of these homes are “smart
homes,” which include features such as automated doors and lighting, wider halls and doorways, special showers to accommodate wheelchairs, automatic door openers, cabinets, counters, and stove tops to help our most severely injured veterans and first responders to reclaim their day-to-day independence. They also facilitate funds to pay off the mortgages of fallen law enforcement
officers, firefighters, and service members who lose their lives in the line of duty or to 9/11 related illness and leave behind young children. They also recently began to utilize a “9/11 Mobile Exhibit,” which is a high-tech, 83foot tractor-trailer, which transforms into an 1,100 square foot exhibit, is a tool to further educate people across the country about the events of that
tragic day. On Saturday, July 16th, Lindenhurst’s Belfast Gastro Pub hosted a Block Party Fundraiser for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which builds mortgage-free smart homes for injured veterans and first responders. The Tunnel to Towers Block party is the latest in a series of charityminded events hosted by Belfast Gastro Pub, 101 North Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst, and their leadership team in owner Dave Crowe and Operations Manager Bobby Fortier. Said Dave: “I’m so proud to be able to use my business as a vehicle to make a difference in so many people’s lives, especially the brave men and women first responders from September 11th. God Bless them. And God Bless America.” The block party ran from 4pm to 8pm on Saturday, July 16th, and included live music, food, drinks, and games for people of all ages- even a dunk tank! Fundraising efforts on the day of the event were staffed by the Lindenhurst Knights of Columbus, including a 50/50 raffle and offering other auction items, as well as the dunk tank and entrance ticket sales.

The Babylon Town Board recently recognized Ethan Klenofsky, 24, of North Babylon for earning the Congressional Award. The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all youth in the United States between the ages of 14 and 24 regardless of ability, circumstance or socioeconomic status. Participants earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold
Certificates and Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas; Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition / Exploration. Ethan worked hard to achieve his goal of receiving the Congressional Award before his 24th birthday. Councilman DuWayne Gregory was his mentor and guided him through the steps of the requirements.
