Spray Park Opens and expertise during their work on the new spray park and pavilion.” The project team included general contractor Stalco Construction; construction manager, site surveyor, spray park designer, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) and civil engineer Sidney B. Bowne & Son; and pavilion architect Keller Sandgren Architects (KSA). The Town of Babylon’s in-house landscaping team developed the landscape design. The park redevelopment was financed through a combination of local and federal sources, including $5 million raised through a bond issue, a $4.1-million community development block grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and $1.3 million in other grant money. In the preconstruction and early construction phases, Stalco reduced the cost of construction by nearly $1 million through value engineering, scope revisions, and use of alternative materials. New York State Assemblyman Bob Sweeney and former NYS Senator Owen Johnson secured a
portion of the funding for the park. “The new, one-story, 2,500-sq.-ft. pavilion with a 1,400-sq.-ft. veranda houses a concession stand, a ticket window, an office, public bathrooms, and a pump and filter room for the spray park,” explained Stalco principal Kevin G. Harney. “The building, located near a new, 94-car parking lot, serves as the main visitor comfort station for the entire Geiger Lake Memorial Park,” he added. “Drawing inspiration from the surrounding natural woods, lake, and streams, the architectural team designed the pavilion as a visually appealing, unobtrusive Adirondackstyle structure, with stone piers, a veranda and deck, and amber-stained cedar siding finish,” explained KSA project manager Robert Paxton. The pitched roof features Timberline Ultra HD Barkwood color multi-dimensional architectural asphalt shingles reminiscent of wooden shakes. A 600-sq.ft. observation deck above the main entrance offers views Geiger Lake and the forest.

The local winner, Juliana Gentile of Deer Park, was named the All Suffolk Winner and her drawing will appear on the cover of future

There he sits – in a place to meet, Sharing a smile with anyone who greets him. I navigate amongst the long rows of tables and with purpose - I stop. His eyes are shining as he looks at me. “So happy to see you once again,” I exclaim. His face lights up. He apologizes for forgetting my name. That’s O.K. – I reply

I listen intently while he recounts his weekend visit with family, Grateful for their concern but content to live on his own – he explains. A small apartment in an urban town Insures he is still viable in spite of his years. A bus to board, A community of familiarity reassures him of his independence. Minutes fly by – chores to finish before the end of my day. He reaches for my hand and says “thank you” and I knew what he meant. His eyes conveyed gratitude for my time, and when he smiled, I witnessed a glimmer of a younger man. The sentiment “take care” is spoken, he softly says he’s hopes he can visit soon. Once again, he smiles. “I’ll be looking for you,” I say and I return the smile.
