The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”
1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors!

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

school’s gymnasium and cafeteria were transformed into a number of STEAMoriented activity stations for all to enjoy. Included were challenges such as “Build Your Own Parachute,” where students were given a number of common household items to build a parachute which could be gently thrown off the gym bleachers, along with a creation station which allowed them to build their very own lava lamps and create massive balloon
towers. Additionally, the night featured engineeringoriented KEVA Planks, and a large coloring wall in the cafeteria made generously by Ms. Moran herself. The district would also like to thank community parent Mrs. Griffin for creating the beautiful lobby display which read “Full STEAM Ahead,” along with the hundreds of students and families who attended throughout the course of the evening’s two sessions.

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
On May 8, Babylon Memorial Grade School faculty, staff, students and their families came together to celebrate achievements in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics during the school’s inaugural “STEAM Night.” Held in both the school’s gymnasium and cafeteria, attendees were introduced to a world of boundless STEAM-oriented opportunities, including, but not limited to, Ozobot stations, Lego building stations, book and plastic cup tower building, creating launchable paper rockets and designing “pom pom poppers.” Throughout the hallways, student work from the school year was on full display, highlighting the excellent work produced both in the classroom setting and in the after-school STEAM Club. Within the school’s computer lab, stations were set up as students were able to engage in collaborative computer coding activities on the Smart Board and create their very own interactive videos on iPads utilizing green screen technology. Additionally, studentvolunteers from BabylonJunior Senior High School showcased their achievements in robotics, and were even able to grant the younger students the opportunity to maneuver the robots themselves via wireless remote controls. Sixth grade student Amiram Cameau is
credited with designing the excellent STEAM Night Logo, which was featured on posters, flyers, along with the official STEAM Night T-shirts that teachers wore throughout the course of the night. The district would like to the thank the
multitude of community members, district faculty and staff members, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students and the volunteers from the Babylon K-6 ParentTeacher Association for all of their efforts toward making the evening such a resounding success.

Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District showed just how special and unique each individual student is during a ceremony in their rock garden on June 20. Last year, the school created the rock garden, modeled after the uniqueness of the book “Only One You,” which stresses how everyone is
unique and has something different to contribute to the world. Each student colored their own individual rock during art class. This year, the kindergartners and new entrants to the school were welcomed into Santapogue by creating their own rocks. One by one, each student added their own painted rocks to the garden. “There’s only one you in
this great big world,” said Santapogue Elementary School Principal Jennifer Carere. “Make it a better place. Not only are these stones a colorful addition to our school, they can serve as a daily reminder to students that no matter what, they’re special and that they have the power to change the world.”

STUDENTS PAINT WITH THEIR PETS - Third and fourth grade students from the Babylon Memorial Grade School recently paid a visit to the Babylon Junior-Senior High School to engage in a pet-portrait painting session with assistance from studentartists of the National Art Honor Society. Students were invited to bring in photographs of their dogs, cats, lizards and hamsters, which would in turn blossom into a gorgeous painting once splashes of color were applied to the supplied canvases. The district would like to thank Babylon Junior-Senior High School art teachers Cheryl Schweider and Patricia Stork for assisting the students throughout the activity, and providing tasty snacks for all to enjoy. Celebrating The Top 25 Graduates The top 25 students in the Class of 2019 at West Babylon Senior High School were honored for their accomplishments during the second annual Blue and Gold Breakfast with the Superintendent
on June 18. Hosted by West Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly and joined by district administrators, students were invited to celebrate
their achievements in the board of education room. The students were asked to choose a West Babylon staff member who has greatly impacted their educational career to join them as their guest for the breakfast.
“Your character, resilience and perseverance shine through in everything you do,” said West Babylon Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly. “You have all excelled in the classroom, on the athletics
field, in the arts, or in some cases, all of these areas. You have all left the halls of West Babylon a better place for having been here.” Dr. Farrelly called each student up to be recognized individually and presented
him or her with a gift. The student then invited their honored guest to be acknowledged as well. The top 25 gathered for one last group photo together before their upcoming graduation.
