he Southeast Concerned Civic Association held their annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser, on Saturday, June 22nd, at the George Washington School in Deer Park. Invited by SECCA President Dr. Tyrone Bennett, Legislator Lou D’Amaro met with several community members at the event, which also featured music, entertainment and a car wash. All proceeds from the fundraiser will support SECCA programs.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Rain By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This seems to have been the weather forecast for the last, I don’t know, two or three weeks or so, give or take a day when it was obviously, undeniably… raining. What to do with this kind of uncertainty? Cancel all plans and batten down the hatches “just in case,” right? Um… no. I shake my head when I see people frantically rearranging their schedules to accommodate the weather – that great, unpredictable force of Mother Nature that we are all beholden to. Why? Chances are, the
so-called experts will be slightly off, or, better yet, completely wrong. Best to cover all bases by predicting a little of everything, no? No. How about some good old-fashioned meteorology to back up these forecasts – and future-casts? Or better yet, how about we focus on getting the one-day right before expanding into the next 7-10 days? Life is unpredictable enough as it is. The last thing we need is others’ farflung foresight thrown into the mix to ensure that no plans are ever made, nothing is ever done and we all just sit around and “play it safe.”
Put it this way, you could do nothing, go nowhere, see no one, experience zilch ... and your own four walls and ceiling could come crashing down around you. So better to get out and see the world, no? I think so. Which is why, sometimes to my detriment, I refuse to put any plans on hold until I look out my window and decide for myself. Roslyn, the audience was very appreciative of the detailed restoration of the ca. 1880’s Priscilla. The sloop, of a design distinctive to the shallow depth of Long Island’s Great South Bay. Though over sixty feet long, she did not have a fixed keel, but was sea worthy and stable because of its broad beam (width) and used a centerboard, which could be raised and lowered (a thousand pounds by block and tackle) as needed. After serving continuously, dredging for oysters until the early 1960’s, she was converted to a cruising schooner until being acquired by the long Island Maritime Museum. Not only was she meticulously restored, mostly by highly skilled volunteers, but today earns her keep through the museum’s sailing program. We recommend a visit to the Long Island Maritime Museum and take the sail on the Priscilla. Details are available on www. limaritime.org.

A group of 25 residents at Island Nursing and Rehab Center, age 52100, recently graduated from Suffolk County Community College’s Faculty Association Community Outreach Program. This was the fourth year in a row that the program has taken place, this year featuring speakers including former Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher and Daniel Linker, Assistant Professor of English, Suffolk County Community College Program Chair and Coordinator of the Faculty Association Professors on Wheels Program. Through the “Professors on Wheels” program, Suffolk County Community College professors donated their time to come to the nursing home to speak to the residents on a variety of educational topics. The graduation ceremony was held for residents who attended the complete series of classes over the course of the year. Residents were adorned in caps and gowns, receiving their graduation certificate with family members, fellow residents and college professors in attendance. Dowling College donated the 2013 tassels as a keepsake for the residents. Additional speakers included David Fridkin,

Judged Art Show Winners BACCA hosted its 24th Annual Judged Art Show reception on Friday night June 7th at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village despite torrential rains that blanketed the region. On hand were Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Thomas Donnelly and BACCA President Shawn Cullinane to present awards to deserving artists. This year’s show included works of artists from Port Washington to Patchogue and doubled the entries from the previous year. The Art Show judge was Mario Tucci, a muralist that specializes in Tromp L’Oeil painting and portraiture. One of the coveted prizes in the BACCA show was the Supervisor’s Award, which went to John R. Redlich for his painting “Surfs Up.” The Best in Show Award
went to artist Dan Fusco for his painting “My Love.” The Viewer’s Choice Award went to Ronald F.
