The Charity of the Month for July is
Blue Umbrella Experience www.abcommunityclasses.org
Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that! The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels. “We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive
Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Also, if you would like to volunteer your time to help fulfill their mission, you can! Lastly, donations are always appreciated. RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - On June 23, 2021, the Adventureland family celebrated the Grand Reopening of Adventureland with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Adventureland opened in 1962 and has been serving Long Island for over 59 years. The park offers both season and day passes that can be purchased online or at the park. In attendance were the Adventureland family, the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, Legislature Jason Richberg, Senator John Brooks, Assemblyman Steve Stern, Councilman Anthony Manetta, and Dana Durso of Andrew Garbarino’s office.
LEGISLATORS MCCAFFREY AND DONNELLY HONOR RETIRING SCPD CHIEF OF DETECTIVES - On Thursday, June 17th, The Suffolk County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee was joined by Suffolk County Police Department Chief of Detectives Gerard Gigante in recognition of his upcoming retirement. Chief Gigante, of Lindenhurst, will be retiring later this summer- bringing to a close an esteemed 35 year career in protecting and serving the people of Suffolk County. During his tenure, he served as the Commanding Officer of several posts, including the Third Precinct Crime Section, Seventh Squad, Highway Patrol Bureau, Patrol Special Operations Bureau, and our own First Precinct. At headquarters, Gigante held the positions of Deputy Chief of Patrol and Chief of Detectives, through which he was at the forefront of the Department’s anti-gang efforts, Firearms Suppression Teams, and the establishment of the Human Trafficking Investigations Unit.

North Babylon Student-Athletes Sign To Colleges Two student-athletes from North Babylon High School recently committed to continuing their sports at the college level. Congratulations to Jayshon Hines who will be wrestling at Northwest Kansas Tech and Colin Rhein who signed with Stony Brook University to play baseball. Hines is a four-year varsity wrestler who has been named All-League three times, All-County
two times and All-State. Last season, Hines qualified for the New York State championship, where he finished in third place. At a national tournament in Myrtle Beach, Hines became an All-American. While wrestling at Northwest Kansas Tech, Hines plans on studying to be an electrician. This season, Rhein was named an All-League and All-County baseball player. He was also selected as
one of Newsday’s Top 100 Baseball Players and an Axcess Baseball Preseason Player to Watch. In Rhein’s last start this season, he pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout, breaking a school record of 17 strikeouts. The district congratulates Hines and Rhein and wishes them success as they continue their athletic careers!

North Babylon High School senior, Victoria Bonavita was 1 of 13 students selected Nationwide to be awarded a scholarship by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI). The scholarships are awarded to high school seniors in the United States who are planning to use their education to better the lives of animals, and who are already actively involved in efforts to do so within their schools or communities. High School principal Dr. Johnathon Klomp also presented Victoria with a special Certificate of Recognition on behalf of NYS Senator Phil Boyle. The certificate read, “In honor of your outstanding achievement and commitment to animal advocacy, through educating individuals with your renowned animal education program and journalist reporting. You have demonstrated the qualities of a leader by serving as a peer role model and your concern JAYSHON HINES - Jayshon Hines signed with Northwest Kansas Tech to continue for all life on this planet”. At age 10, Victoria his wrestling career at the college level. Weeks later, she collaborated with teacher, Cate Magrane to adapt her program as a means of interdisciplinary teaching for, Magrane’s summer school math class at Bay Shore High School. By age 13, Victoria’s class size rose to as many as 500 students. At age 11, she began writing an animal education column for ET Week and LI Pet Lover Magazine, eventually having more than 2 million copies of her articles circulated. Aquarium, North Shore Animal League America, LI Pet Expo, America’s VetDogs and The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Center, as well as many other animal and children’s websites. For her volunteer work, Victoria was honored in Washington, DC as the top Middle Level Volunteer in NYS. She was also the youngest person to be honored with a Gracie Award, for her educational website, Victoria’s Amazing World. As a recognized ‘Ambassador for Pets and Wildlife’, Victoria was honored on the floor of the NYS Assembly. She has been supported by members of the United States Congress and Senate, NYS Senate and NYS Assembly, Suffolk County Legislature, and members of local government. As an ambassador and educator, Victoria has been invited annually to speak at NYS Animal Advocacy Day in Albany. Victoria has had the unique opportunity to work with her heroes and the leaders in the animal community, including, Jack Hanna, Dr. Jane Goodall, The Incredible Dr. Pol, Jackson Galaxy, activist Beth Stern, and many others – including a special interview with legendary Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, where they discussed the important role that animals played in helping man get to the moon. Over the course of her young career, Victoria

She said, “What I enjoy most is meeting with students and being able to share my love of animals with them. I have received the most heartfelt messages from people all over the world, who share my passion and want to help make our world a better place. And I will always be thankful to Belmont Elementary School Principal Valerie Jackson for allowing me the opportunity to give my first class”. Victoria graduated with high honors and will be attending SUNY Canton in the fall, where she will study veterinary sciences and medicine.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored North Babylon School District students Lauren Iudica and Layla Moncayo as his District winner and runner-up, respectively, of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the annual competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety and prevent accidental drowning by creating a poster that illustrates one or more safety tips. Each year, one poster is selected from all of those
submitted to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its seasonal safety campaign. Entries were submitted by students from throughout Legislator Donnelly’s district and Lauren and Layla’s were selected as the top two. Lauren received a County Proclamation and Layla received a Certificate of Distinguished Achievement from Legislator Donnelly, who was joined by the students’ parents, teacher Ms. Lina Lenis, Principal Drew Olson and other North
Babylon school officials at the presentation ceremony, held at Parliament Place Elementary School on June 10. “The ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest is great way to remind and engage children about the importance of safety around swimming pools so they are truly able to just enjoy the fun of summer,” said Legislator Donnelly. “While there were many great entries, Lauren and Layla’s stood out, and I thank them for using their talents to help make this a safer summer for everyone.”

LEGISLATOR MCCAFFREY SPONSORS COURT RENAMING - Suffolk County Legislator had two of his resolutions sent to the County Executive’s desk following the Tuesday, June 22nd, General meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature- including his motion to rename the Supreme Court Building at the John P. Cohalan, Jr. Court Complex in Honor of Justice Marquette L. Floyd. Justice Floyd was the first African American District Court Judge in Suffolk County; and served on the District Court bench with distinction for 19 years as its senior judge. In 1989, Justice Floyd became the first African American Justice of the New York State Supreme Court in Suffolk County. He faced great adversity in growing up in the rural segregated south, coming of age during the Great Depression, and serving our nation in what was a segregated military. Yet Justice Floyd persisted, qualifying for Officer Candidate School in the United States Air Force and earning degrees from NYU and Brooklyn Law School. ‘BE POOL SMART’ POSTER CONTEST WINNERS - From left, Suffolk Unfortunately, Justice Floyd passed away on December 12, 2020 at the age of 93. BACCA’s resident theatre company, Modern Classics Theatre Company of Long Island (www.modernclassicstheatrecompanyoflongisland.net), will present DOUBT, A Parable by John Patrick Shanley for six performances at the BACCA Arts Center located at 149 N. Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) is honoring one of its featured artists, Edward Stephenson Bates, with a Hometown Heroes banner to be displayed in his hometown of Deer Park. Mr. Bates served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2 and was assigned to the Floyd Bennett Naval Air Station in Brooklyn, New York. Bates traveled to share his story
with students and received countless community and county awards. After his discharge from the Navy, he embraced oil painting as his main artistic medium. Bates’ artistic talents were self-taught and consistently nurtured through everything he achieved. Mr. Bates died on January 29, 2021. The Hometown Heroes project was started by the Kiwanis Club of
Lindenhurst in 2020 as a way of honoring veterans or those currently serving in the U.S. military. It has since expanded throughout the town of Babylon. From Memorial Day to Veterans Day, banners of nearly 400 service members will line the streets of the town. Mr. Bates’ banner will be hung on Deer Park Avenue. On June 5, 2021, the town also named a section of Carll’s
Path, between Tell Avenue and Cara Court, in honor of Mr. Bates’ 96th birthday. McCaffrey stood with officials from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties – including County Executives Steve Bellone and Laura Curranto unveil a memorial honoring the twenty one public transportation workers who died of COVID-19 across Long Island. “Our transportation workers,” said McCaffrey, “serve as the backbone of our society, and proved to the masses how essential they were last year when they were tasked with providing much needed PPE, testing and vaccine equipment, as well as keeping our mass transportation systems up and running. I thank them all for their dedication to serving others, and assure that we will never forget their service.”
