Three Babylon JuniorSenior High School students – Matthew McGaley, Andrew Szuchy and Jack Hartigan, along with their childhood friend Emmett Chapey – participated in a 30-mile bike ride to benefit Feed the Children on May 21st. Starting in East Hampton and finishing in Montauk, the foursome completed their journey in less than three hours. The boys surpassed their
initial goal of $15,000, raising $15,770 which will allow Feed the Children to send a truck filled with enough food and essentials to provide help for 400 Long Island families. In mid-August, the boys will work with Feed the Children to personally package and distribute boxes of food to specific families. The fundraising idea began after the four boys saw a notice in their

parish bulletin looking for gift card donations for struggling families in their community. They chose Feed the Children because it offers domestic programs that provide both food and education for children in need. Feed the Children collects the food and supplies and works directly with other organizations to help needy families on Long Island.
Executive Director of Hope For Youth, began the ceremony. “There currently is no such shelter in Suffolk County, so we’re thrilled and honored to be opening this program,” said Hegarty. “We look forward to providing a safe, supportive environment to all youth that find themselves in crisis and on the street.” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone gave further uplifting remarks. “This first shelter is important... it is going to help kids in crisis, young people who are the responsibility of us all, to stabilize and hopefully deal with the issues that led them out of there homes in the first place... This home
represents our effort as a community to say, ‘We take responsibility for our young people and we’re going to work to address the issues... not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s the smart thing to do.’” Bellone further added, “If you take a look at the home and you go inside, it really is a home. It really feels like a home for these kids.” Also in attendance were Senator Phil Boyle, Lakeisha Lewis representing New York Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean Pierre, Jason Richberg representing Legislator DuWayne Gregory, and Reverend Roderick Pearson of the Suffolk County Youth Bureau.

State officials and representatives from all levels were in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony of Suffolk County’s newest youth shelter program. The program, run by Hope For Youth, an Amityville based non-profit dedicated to positive change in children’s lives, will serve as a safe haven for teens aged 12-20 that find themselves in need of shelter. We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which
affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall
be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.
The Future Beckons Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Class of 2016 celebrated their commencement on June 25th on Coach Williams Memorial Field. The 126 members of the class proudly marched onto the field to Pomp and Circumstance, led by the Color Guard and American Celtic Pipe Band. Michael Logan, Babylon Junior-Senior High School senior class president, and Student Council President Haley Watt offered a reflection on years past and a look ahead to new beginnings. Salutatorian Ryan Cosgro spoke about the high school
experience in Babylon. “It is the collective experience of all the positives and negatives throughout high school that helps us discover who we are,” Cosgro said, adding that failures will also come on the path to success. “Failure is not necessarily a bad thing. You can view failure as defeat or an opportunity to do better. The important thing is to be resilient. The ability to recover from and try again is what will lead to success.” Valedictorian Adam Gumbardo told his peers to be different and be a voice out in the world. “I hope that in years to come, we
are all trying new things, breaking down new barriers and making new mistakes,” Gumbardo said. “You cannot go back in time and make a brand new beginning, but you can start right now and make a brand new ending.” After the presentation of diplomas by Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi and Babylon School District Board of Education President Ann Donaldson, the concert chorus joined together one last time to sing “Time of Your Life” by Green Day.

Speed of Light Sixth-graders at Babylon Memorial Grade School tested their environmental ingenuity as they designed, engineered and raced their own solar-powered cars on June 17th. During their environmental engineering enrichment course, the
students learned about the environment and the impact of pollution. They explored alternate forms of clean energy. After discussing how photovoltaic cells work and their current uses in realworld technology, students designed, engineered and
constructed a solar energy race car as a culminating activity. Race day activities were postponed due to some cloud coverage but the sixth-graders were still impressed with their engineering skills.

Salutatorian Kaitlyn Sparacio said she was confident that she and her students have the tools to succeed while valedictorian Alonzo Tabada urged students to remember actress Audrey Hepburn’s statement, “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says, ‘I’m possible.’” Each year, the seniors collectively select one faculty member to deliver a speech at their graduation. The Class of 2016 selected
English teacher Kimberly Maccarrone to speak at graduation, and she spoke affectionately to her beloved students. Five students, Andrew DiGiacomo, Tan Duong, Tayla Fitzroy, Amanda Liantonio and Bryan Warno, were then honored for earning perfect attendance throughout all four years in high school. Each student received a certificate to commemorate the outstanding achievement. With their loved ones applauding their major accomplishment, students had their names announced one by one, and each received the diploma he or she coveted for four years.

Paces for Preemies The Student Council at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District participated in Wonderwalk, a community
service event designed to raise awareness of premature babies. The walk, created by the March of Dimes, served as a fundraiser for future

North Babylon High School’s Class of 2016 graduated before families, friends, district administrators, board of education and staff members in attendance for the ceremony.
