Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

dresser during times like these where I am not comfortable going to a salon is so comforting. She will come to my house and give me a hair cut outside if I want. It doesn’t get much more refreshing than that.” Mary D. from Massapequa, a long-time client of Eileens also has only good things to share; “I live with a crippling disability and getting out is a challenge for me, especially in inclement weather. I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. If I ever need anything from the store before she arrives I simply call her and she will pick it up for me. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. She is also looking for a donation of a minibus (which can be used) for the non-profit traveling salon and her outreach work for the homeless. Scanlon’s vehicles are all easily identified because they are decorated with salon decals and sponsorship information from local businesses. We now know the NY cases started at the end of January. It took 6-7 weeks for cases to take hold, and we weren’t doing anything to slow it down and were spending time indoors where it circulates more readily. These states are experiencing the normal spread of the virus when social distancing is diminished. This will happen everywhere in the US. We do not have adequate contact tracing to have a success story like Germany. Hopefully it will still be slow enough not to overwhelm the hospitals although Phoenix may be showing that not to be true. Sean Clouston, PhD, Assistant Professor of Family, Population and Preventive Medicine One likely reason for a spike of Covid-19 cases in states is that they did not have a large epidemic to start, and then they reopened without implementing strong casetracking and quarantining efforts. Weather probably
isn’t a factor in the sense that warmer weather protects from viral spread. We had our first wave in NY when it was cold, Florida is having their wave now, while it’s hot. However, weather may matter in that people in the cold in New York stay indoors, while people in the summer in the South stay indoors (with AC) and that could increase risk a lot. The goal of the lockdown was to have federal and local governments develop a response to the pandemic. That response should have been 1) effective contact tracing, 2) quarantining guidelines for people who are sick, 3) ramping up of testing in order to control, 4) rules and regulations about how to interact safely (i.e., with masks, outside, etc.), 5) a federal response to guide rolling shutdowns to control epidemic curves. I think that has happened in New York to some extent, though masking still seems to be an issue, and wearing masks seems to have been ignored by many in other states now experiencing increased cases.

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from
the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
