The June 5th Babylon School District Board of Education meeting was full of recognitions, spanning not only the students’ accomplishments, but the district staff as well. To begin the nights’ recognitions, Babylon Junior Senior High School valedictorian Gabriella Albanese and salutatorian Ece Bapcum were commended by the board of education for their outstanding accomplishments spanning athletics, academics and extracurricular activities.
Gabriella will be attending SUNY Stony Brook’s Honors College with a major in chemistry, while Ece will be attending Northeastern University with a major in molecular biology. The members of Babylon Memorial Grade School’s Mock Trial Team were also recognized by the board of education for their successful participation in the Western Suffolk BOCES Mock Trial Tournament. Districtwide Achievements plaintiff team and defense team were victorious; each winning their cases and also winning for overall presentation and style. Babylon Junior-Senior High School math teacher Frank Mancuso was presented with a token of appreciation for being recognized by Sen. Phil Boyle as a “Teacher of Excellence” at his second annual Teacher of Excellence Awards Ceremony recently held at the Bay Shore Fire Department. Mr. Mancuso has been a part of the Babylon School District for eight years, and is highly regarded by students and staff alike. Additionally, eight staff members throughout the district were granted with tenure and celebrated by the community for their commitment to education. The district congratulates Kerrin Brennan, Cecila Galbraith, Erin Kennedy, Lindsay Laurich, Deirdre McIntee, Patricia Ryder, Marissa Scholl and Danielle Weis. Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway.

DECORATION OF GRAVES - On May 27th, North Babylon’s Boy Scout Troop 399 and Girl Scout Troop 3161 helped prepare a Memorial Day tribute to the men and women who have lost their lives serving their country. The scouts arrived at Pinelawn National Cemetery in the early morning to decorate the graves with hundreds of American flags. Decorating the graves is an annual tradition for the Scouts, and takes them about two hours to complete.

Thirteen year-old animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita was invited to Albany for the second year in a row to speak at NYS Animal Advocacy Day. The event took place at the Capitol on June 6th, in the Well of the Legislative Office Building. Victoria was introduced to the hundreds in attendance by Assemblyman Dean Murray. Murray said, the reason we’re here is to help advocate, to help educate. He went on to say that in addition to being an Assemblymember, he owns an advertising agency that publishes specialty publications - one of which is the L.I. Pet Lover newspaper. He told the audience that he “hit the jackpot” at last year’s Animal Advocacy Day when he
