They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are
genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as
who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Blue & Gold West Babylon Senior High School’s top 25 students in the Class of 2018 were recognized during the inaugural Blue and Gold Breakfast with the Superintendent on June 12th. Hosted by West Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly and joined by district administrators, students were invited to celebrate their accomplishments in the board of education room. The students were asked to choose a West Babylon staff member who has greatly impacted their educational career to join them as their guest for the breakfast.
“Kudos to all of you for being here,” said Dr. Farrelly. “I’m so proud of each and every one of you. Not only have you been in the top of your class, you have been actively engaged in so many aspects of our senior high school. I’m impressed by your leadership skills, your poise, your drive and by

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. NYS Assemblyman Dean Murray recently honored 14 year-old animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita during the June 5th session of the NYS Assembly. Victoria, a High Honor student at North Babylon High School, was recognized for her work as an animal activist, educator and journalist. Also, welcoming Victoria to the Assembly was Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre from the North Babylon district. Victoria was honored for her work, along with Lisa Mongiello, an animal science teacher at Eastern Suffolk Boces, following the 8th annual NYS Animal Advocacy day that took place earlier in the Well of the Legislative Office Building. Victoria was invited to speak at that event for the 3rd year in a row. During his introduction, Assemblyman Murray commended Victoria, acknowledging her work as an activist, educator and journalist and referencing her monthly column in L.I. Pet Lover newspaper and website where she educates people on all types of animals. Mr. Murray also referenced an Ambassador Program that Victoria is working on with Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy. Adding, “Victoria

Blast from the Past Students at William E. DeLuca Elementary School in the North Babylon School District went back to 1967 by participating in activities that were prominent at that time in honor of the school’s 50th anniversary. In commemoration of
the momentous occasion, students observed five decades of class photos and enjoyed activities including a spirograph station, hopscotch, research-related activities, Battleship and Mr. Potato Head. In addition, a ceremony featuring
performances by fourthgrade chorus students was held to dedicate a time capsule - containing a school T-shirt, tablet, iPod, letters, a fidget spinner and yearbook - to students 25 years from today.

Cancer Survivor Day Amid the music and their memories, more than 1,400 cancer survivors, their families and other loved ones gathered Saturday to celebrate the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s 12th annual Don Monti Cancer Survivors’ Day, held outside the Monter Cancer Center in Lake Success, NY. The day of celebration, made possible through the generosity of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, included patients from 12 Northwell hospitals that collectively treat more than 16,000 new cancer patients every year – North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, LIJ Forest Hills, LIJ Valley Stream,
and Huntington, Plainview Glen Cove and Staten Island University hospitals. The keynote speaker was Carmen Marc Valvo, an internationally known fashion designer and a colon cancer survivor. It was in 2003 that Mr. Valvo realized that something was wrong. In his late forties at the time, he was just shy of the recommended age of 50 to begin colorectal cancer screening. However, Mr. Valvo said he listened to his body and insisted on having a colonoscopy, a decision that may have saved his life. His doctors found a large tumor inside his colon, and Mr. Valvo underwent surgery. Now a well-known advocate for colon cancer awareness and funding for research, Mr. Valvo credits journalist Katie Couric, former co-host
of NBC-TV’s Today Show, for “pulling me out of my cancer closet” and giving him the courage to speak openly about his diagnosis. He continues to promote awareness through his work as a board member of the Colon Cancer Alliance and has given generously of his time to raise money for colorectal research. Clearly emotional, Mr. Valvo looked out at the hundreds of cheering people in his audience and told them, “The one thing that cancer taught me to do is to celebrate every day. Life is joyous…we all need to remember this.” Another cancer survivor, pediatrician Anila Thomas, MD, was in her last year of medical school at age 25, when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2011. Following a two-year treatment regimen of
spinal taps, infusions and bone marrow biopsies recommended by Northwell Cancer Institute oncologist Jonathan Kolitz, MD, Dr. Thomas was declared cancerfree in 2014. In what she describes “as nothing short of a miracle,” she finished medical school in 2013, and completed her pediatric residency at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in 2017. “And, to top it off, “said Dr. Thomas, “and probably best of all - my daughter, Abigail Sarah Thomas, was born on October 25, 2017. So, take ownership of your survivorship,” she said. “We need to bring hope and encouragement to everyone who has shared this experience.” Richard Barakat MD, physician-in-chief and director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute,
who joined the health system in April after many years at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan, said he was struck by the energy and the passion of survivors, loved ones and staff. “Our overarching goal is to standardize cancer care across Northwell Health – from Westchester, Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island – so no matter where you get treatment, you’ll receive the same level of high-quality care,” he said, noting that a major priority will be on expanding cutting-edge clinical trials for our patients, including the launch of Phase 1 clinical trials through Northwell’s Center for Cancer Therapeutics at Monter. “We are also working closely with our colleagues at the world-renowned Cold Spring Harbor
Laboratory. Through this unique collaboration created three years ago, we’re bringing innovative research from the lab and giving our patients access to novel, early-stage clinical trials.” Summing up the spirit of the day was Caroline Monti Saladino, who continues the legacy of her late parents, Tita and Joe Monti, as president of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. Looking out at the audience, she asked simply, “Are you all happy to be here today?” Responding to enthusiastic applause, she added, “Well, so am I. This is my family’s reward, and what makes our work at the Foundation so joyful. As I do every year, I wish that all your days be filled with health, happiness and most important - life.”
