New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for

After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Their farmstand is open to the public every day with fresh picked organic produce! Their owner Mike runs various programs for the community such as Pregnant Drives, Field Trips, Volunteer Opportunities, Gardening Classes and Bee-Keeping Classes! Their Work For Food program is also another way the community can become involved with the farm. This program allows people to volunteer their time and contribute as few or as many hours as desired, in replace for a bundle of fresh organic food! There are many duties that can be performed on the farm and Organics Today Farm is accepting new volunteers at the moment! There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

North Babylon High School students adorned themselves with colored bracelets to help raise funds for the Pulsera Project. By purchasing the bracelets, or “pulseras” in Spanish, they raised $1,200 for the nonprofit organization, which helps support fair trade employment in Central America. The artists that craft these colorful pieces for the group also benefit from programs that include scholarships, healthcare, housing, legal services and personal development. In addition, proceeds

also fund a wide range of social impact programs in the country, such as education, women and youth empowerment, the social/economic crisis in Nicaragua, social enterprise and more. Ms. Colleen Cafiso’s Spanish class helped promote and sell the bracelets by creating flyers and selling the bracelets in the school store and at the craft fair. Prior to that, students read and watched short films about Nicaragua and learned about the artists and communities in the country who are

They were also educated on fair trade and the significance on impacting people’s lives in developing nations by purchasing from companies that value human dignity and equality. “Thank you to all who helped support and promote this great cause,” Ms. Cafiso said. “I am overjoyed at the positive response that this received from the school community.”

Fudim Wins Scholarship Emily Fudim, a resident of Babylon, and a student at Hofstra University, was selected as the 2019 Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship recipient. Awarded annually by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its Communications Committee, the $2,000 scholarship was presented to Fudim at the group’s annual luncheon on June 7. Emily Fudim is a graduate student at Hofstra University studying Health Administration, where she maintains a perfect grade point average. She is also currently employed by two Long Island hospitals – Good Samaritan Hospital (West Islip) as an admitting

clerk and as a flexstaff medical secretary for Northwell Health, Southside Cardiology (Bay Shore). In May 2017, she graduated from James Madison University, where she studied communications and public relations. At James Madison, she was active in several community organizations, including her sorority’s Breast Cancer Awareness and Education Committee, which she chaired. In that role, she organized campuswide fund raisers and events. Her work for this committee and other volunteer service for healthcare-related organizations prompted her interest in the healthcare field. When she completes her master’s degree, she

Supporting The ALS Ride For Life

plans a career in hospitalbased risk management or quality assurance. She hopes to put her communication skills to good use to improve patient relations, community relations, and healthcare policy. The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship has been awarded since 1994 and commemorates the late vice president for government and public affairs at the Hospital Council. Brown served in this role from 1983 – 1993. The scholarship is offered to a college junior, senior, or post-graduate student who is both a resident of Long Island and studies communications/ marketing, journalism, or health care administration.

On May 14, staff and students from the Babylon Memorial Grade School showed their full support for ALS Ride for Life, as founder Chris Pendergast and his team paraded down the front of the school building to waves of cheers and rounds of applause. As Mr. Pendergast and his team made their way toward the front circle of the school, students held up posters and signs they made in class. Additionally, student-musicians representing the school’s

band and orchestra filled the air with sweet sounds of music to serve as a welcoming introduction. In order to further support ALS research, the school held fundraisers earlier this year such as Pajama Day, along with a highly successful WalkA-Thon which raised ALS awareness and collected donations for additional research funding. The district would like to thank Linda McGarvey, the secretary at the main office, for coordinating

this wonderful event which allowed ALS Ride for Life to safely pass through the Babylon School District. ALS Ride for Life was founded in 1997 by Chris Pendergast and his supporters. Each May, during ALS Awareness Month, those diagnosed with ALS ride their powered wheelchairs across Long Island to Manhattan in order to raise awareness of the disease, which currently has no cure.
