Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

The feeding program at North Babylon High School began back on March 19th when the pandemic first started and is still growing and going strong every day. They average over 1,600 grab and go bags a day. Groceries are distributed to over 500 families daily! People can come from any community, no questions asked, and receive food for there family. Produce, meat, dairy, non- perishable items, and so much more are handed out each and every day. Island Harvest donates pallets of food each day and numerous donations are received from the

Productive Ways To Spend The Summer After Graduation Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives.

• Network. Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields.

That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer, but spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job.

• When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained.

• Contact career services offices at your alma mater. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets.

• Customize a résumé for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine résumés for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing. It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may land jobs more quickly than those who do not.

The North Babylon School District is proud to announce that five seniors were offered scholarships from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island. Every year, the youth organization offers scholarships to high school seniors who participate in its mentoring programs.

When designing outdoor living spaces, homeowners may learn about biophilic design, an architectural concept that aims to incorporate natural elements into outdoor living spaces. Proponents

of biophilic design say it satisfies an innate human need to affiliate with nature, thereby helping to reduce stress that people may experience after being stuck indoors for much of their days. Biophilic design is often part of a home interior design, but many homeowners also embrace it when designing their outdoor living spaces.

For example, surrounding outdoor living areas with noninvasive plants, flowers and trees and using natural materials like wood and stone when building such spaces are great ways to embrace biophilic design and create a tension-free ambiance in outdoor living spaces.

Choosing a college major is an important decision that many students delay making until their sophomore or even junior years. Only after taking a few courses and uncovering one’s interests do some college students figure out what they want to do with their lives. Each student is different, and while some may pursue a degree based on a particular passion, others may choose majors that can lead to high-paying jobs. While men often lean toward majors like engineering and computer science that have traditionally been linked to high earnings, women have historically gravitated to lowerpaying specialties like education and social sciences, but in recent years a shift has

occurred, and more women have begun to choose majors associated with higher post-graduate salaries. Reports from the career guidance site Glassdoor analyzed how much male and female professionals with the same college degree earned and identified many instances in which women went on to earn more than men in the first five years of their career. They’ve identified several majors where female college graduates can earn as much or more than their male counterparts and find successful careers.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. two and I wanted to expose my children to the essential benefits of volunteering throughout their lives,” she said. “I believe we are obliged to give back to society, and as a woman, certainly women’s causes are on the top of my list.” Throughout her time with the BBCC, Karen has chaired many committees and served on the board. She became president of the organization in 2016. She is proud of her team and everything they have accomplished in the line of breast cancer prevention, research, education, services and support. “Our approach has evolved to encompass the mind, body and soul,” Karen explained. “We offer Reiki, meditation, journal writing and informational seminars for our participants.” Some other programs they offer include the Pink/Teal Ribbon Program (an exercise program designed for women to regain strength, stamina and energy after surgery), high school scholarships, research grants, and Be Smart Educational Program offered through local schools. “Additionally, we have our Gift of Health and Inspiration (GOHI) bag given to newly diagnosed patients filled with important information and soothing and healing items

The BBCC has a Vision of Hope Garden that was developed at the Babylon Town Hall. “This garden is a beautiful little sanctuary where one can sit and reflect,” Karen said. “The garden was conceived and developed to incorporate a ‘ribbon path’ met with an ‘O’ garden. The coming together or merging of the two represent the connection between breast and gynecological cancers.” Bricks can be purchased to be laid on the garden paths. Volunteer groups tend to the garden, a wonderful undertaking. BBCC has a Sense of Security (SOS)

program that helps to assist the family when a gynecological/breast cancer warrior passes. Nearly the entire crew at BBCC is made up of volunteers. “Volunteerism comes with compromise and flexibility,” Karen said. “At times, life gets in the way, changes evolve, but we are a good strong team. Our main thrust is to help alleviate the stress a diagnosis can bring. This way of assisting has changed over the years. Today, many need transportation and help with co-payments. The protocol for many in treatment has also changed: chemotherapy followed by radiation five days a week for a month.

Being able to help so many in the Babylon Township Community is so extremely important and rewarding.” Although Karen has been involved with the BBCC for many years, she said there are many who are unaware of its existence. “It always makes me chuckle and amazes me when I meet people who say never knew we existed,” she said. “As a group, we have had to think outside of the box. Our annual fundraisers are being postponed, and we have even had to cancel our annual Chefs for a Cause event this year. Each event is spectacular and incredibly different from the other, bringing all age groups to the table. We live in such a wonderful Township where our communities want to help. We are working hard as a group to cut back spending on our programs, but to keep them going through this unforeseen time and into the future. Much of what we do is subsidized by donations, sponsors, grants and fundraisers.” Some upcoming events include the Tanger 5K (October 4 at Tanger Outlets in Deer Park). Karen would like to share a word of thanks with all those who support their mission. “I would like the community to know that our fundraisers benefit our programs,” she said. “We are conservative,

always thinking of utilizing our money first and foremost for our participants in need in our township, keeping our spending caps at a reasonable amount to truly help alleviate the stress this diagnosis comes with, a re-diagnosis or even a metastatic diagnosis.” For readers interested in getting involved, there are a variety of means to do so. “Community members can support us by attending events, donating raffles, sponsoring events or hosting a fundraiser,” Karen said. “Many of our programs are run by volunteers with a specific talent they would like to share and bring to the group. Many people may just want to help, whether volunteering to drive or work a fundraiser or table at a fair. By Rachel Koepke and Karen Kunkel The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993, when three good Babylon Village friends, Debbie Basile, Betty Ann Innes and Pat Smith, two of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer, were sitting around the kitchen table. They decided they could no longer ignore the statistics. These ladies wanted to logistically see what was happening on Long Island’s South Shore regarding “clusters” of breast cancer. They began going door to door, along with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition, mapping the cancer incidence. From 1993 onward, the coalition evolved and expanded. The BBCC is a grassroots nonprofit, providing services to individuals in active treatment for breast and/ or gynecological cancers. These services can include rides to and from doctor/ chemotherapy/radiation visits, prepared food, house cleaning and assistance with essential bills. The program is aptly named the Lend a Helping Hand Program (LAHH). Karen Kunkel, the volunteer president of BBCC, has been involved with the organization for more than 20 years. “My daughter was just turning
