The North Babylon High School’s Quiz Bowl Team were finally able to compete in person for the first time in over a year, finishing the 2021-2022 school year strong. The varsity team, led by seniors Victoria Fowler, Antonios Manolas, Olivia Pescatore, and junior Spiros Manolas, finished in the top 10 of all three Long Island III Cup tournaments this year and have been awarded the title of Island Cup III Champions. They will be receiving a traveling

trophy with captain Victoria Fowler’s name on it, and a proclamation from local officials. Both the varsity and junior varsity teams were undefeated in the Western Suffolk division this year in Regional Quiz Bowl and competed in the Regional Quiz Bowl Finals. The junior varsity team is led by freshmen Brianna Henriquez, Derek Contreras and Arlene Lopez. This is the 10th year in a row North Babylon’s Quiz Bowl teams qualified

and competed in the finals at Regional Quiz Bowl. The varsity team went undefeated in the preliminary rounds, and made it to the playoffs. After winning against Plainedge High School, they won fourth place on Long Island. The district congratulates both the varsity and junior varsity teams on a successful return to in-person competitions.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities across New York City and Long Island.

Babylon Village Arts Council Art Workshops

Babylon Village Arts Council will be offering several art workshops during June and July. Beginning on Tuesday, June 28 ‘Paint Night at the Conklin House’ will be a wonderful evening to spent with friends. Local artist Tom Finn will lead a stepby step approach to painting the historic Conklin House. Registration is a must through Eventbrite. Search “Summer Paint Night”. Fee is $25 which includes materials. The event begins from 6-8 pm on the Conklin House Lawn. Save the dates for Fish Printing at the

Babylon Pool on July 12 from 4-6 pm led by Shawn Uttendorfer, local Babylon artist. Fee is $15 which includes all materials. Children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, or have poor social skills, are verbally or physically aggressive, are on the autism spectrum, etc. are offered integrated interdisciplinary treatment in a therapeutic environment at the Residential Treatment Center (RTC) on their Wading River campus. An interdisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health staff, childcare staff, educators, medical professionals and a recreation therapist formulate individualized treatment plans that address the speciﬁc needs of each of those children. The underlying belief of the center is that a healthy community helps heal. At the RTC, children reside in modern cottages designed to feel like home. The cottages include individual rooms, common areas, a large dining room and a kitchen. Recreational programming there includes the Conway Recreation Center, athletic ﬁelds and courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The youth can also participate in off-campus recreation activities such as volunteer services and community involvement. The RTC also offers additional therapies and services, such as the Culinary Arts

program or music and art therapy. Additionally, the youth also attend the Little Flower Union Free School District, a special act public school for students with special educational needs, which is also on their Wading River campus. Additionally, Little Flower also offers a Mental Health and Medical Department that utilizes a traumainformed, multi-systemic approach to support to all foster children. Adhering to best practices, nurses coordinate and monitor medical care, including overseeing weekly well-child clinic, and provide screenings, child and caregiver education, assist pediatricians with routine physicals and provide body checks as needed. Children receive dental services and are referred to specialists when recommended. In addition to the RTC, Little Flower also offers Community Family Treatment & Support Services (CFTSS) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Their organization’s service providers address various needs, such as daily living skills, coping skills, crisis prevention, socialization and employment needs, via telehealth, in the home, school and community. $400K GRANT BRINGS FREE CAREER TRAINING - Adults with a high school diploma and some or no post-secondary education will soon be able to get free career training at Suffolk County Community College thanks to a $408,157 grant from the State University of New York’s (SUNY) Stay Near Go Far initiative. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law. The North Babylon High School’s International Thespian Society hosted its 2022 induction ceremony in April and welcomed 10 new members to its program. Moderator and High School Theater teacher Lisa Drance conducted the ceremony along with CoPresidents Haylee Fox and Aiyana Torres. Inductees were added to Troupe #3370 during a lovely ceremony where each new members’ accomplishments were highlighted. New members include Lily Bakalli, Fabiana Canales, Keira Fox, Arianna George, Jessica Goodis, Diamond McPartling, Emily Meyer, Kaylee Neumann, Jenna Schmitt and Jada Walters. The troupe also bestowed the title of Honorary Thespian upon Mrs. Karen Manzione, Arts Department Secretary, in honor of her upcoming retirement. Robert Moses Middle School students in North Babylon recently presented “The Lion King Jr.” in conjunction with Plaza Theatrical. After enjoying a 10-week residency with the theater company, students in grades 7 and 8 gave a marvelous showing of the Broadway hit. The cast, led by Tristan Williams and Michael Mazur as Simba, G’Vienna Salas as Nala, Grace Knappe as Rafiki and Tanner Wojt as Mufasa made each song their own, with lovely choreography and musical numbers. Aidan Burshtein and Philip Russo kept the audience in stitches as Timon and Pumbaa and had the house clapping along to “Hakuna Matata.” The entire production was a delight from start to finish and it was a great way for RMMS students to return to live stage productions. The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra Announces 2022 Summer Concert Series

PSEG Long Island crews performing storm-hardening work on the distribution system. Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 1,000 miles of distribution mainline circuits. From the first quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, the sections of circuits that are storm hardened saw a 44% reduction in damage leading to outages compared to the rest of the distribution system. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with

Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional more than 190 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program

work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. Since 2014, PSEG Long Island removed more than 88,500 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed more than 21,000 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future

growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 14,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.
