Earlier this month, students wrote and published their own books, titled “What Am I?” After studying various styles of writing using descriptive words, students described a chosen animal using clues but not revealing the animal’s identity. Meanwhile, the Gold Squad came crashing out of the gate from the very first matchup, sweeping the first three games against St. Patrick’s and keeping that momentum going throughout the season, for a final ranking of 2nd place in the Diocese. Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over six years and this year’s Volleyball Team includes 16 girls from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, whose practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island locations. At the heart of the CMSAA’s

Mission Statement is their role in helping develop well-rounded athletes, so the program’s volunteer coaches seek to promote physical endurance and good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players. I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a ﬂourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to ﬂip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your inﬂuence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

At Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School (SSCM), there was much celebration among Girls’ Volleyball teams, as the Gold and Blue Squads enjoyed some end of season cheer. Second-graders in AnnMarie Ayerle’s class at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District have been hard at work on their literacy skills this school year. Earlier this month, students wrote and published their own books, titled “What Am I?” After studying various styles of

writing using descriptive words, students described a chosen animal using clues but not revealing the animal’s identity. After weeks of writing, editing and rewriting, the students then illustrated their books. The class also published their second issue of their newspaper, the Classroom Gazette. Each issue of the

newspaper includes stories, poems and news written by the students. The secondgrade class celebrates their literacy accomplishments with a display of student writings in June. The display features story books, compilation books, newspapers and published books.

heroes he has ever met and credited him with stopping the Vietnam war almost singly handily with his protests. The North Babylon Teachers’ Organization is pleased to announce the new slate of officers for 2016 through 2018. Kathy Dein, President: Ms. Dein has been a teacher at Parliament Place Elementary School for 24 years. Her first role in the NBTO was webmaster in 1995. Since then she was a building representative for over ten years, and held the position of Secretary of the NBTO. Ms. Dein is also a NYSUT delegate and represented the NBTO at the NYSUT RA. After receiving specialized training from NYSUT, she was the grievance cochair, protecting the rights of all members within the NBTO Contract. Ms. Dein has served on several committees including Technology, Professional Development, RTI, and Testing. She is a strong social advocate, as well leading the district to assist the Lindenhurst Teachers in their disaster relief efforts after Super Storm Sandy. She also led the NBTO in the Opt-Out Movement by organizing rallies and phone banks. Ms. Dein believes students and teachers are more than just a score. Kathy Vento, First Vice President: Is a lifelong resident of North Babylon and graduate of North Babylon High School. She has worked in the Elementary schools for 13

years and at the High school for the past 11 years. Mrs. Vento has served on the NBTO Para and Cafeteria Aide Chapter as a Building Representative, Vice President, and Secretary since 1996.

Jeanie Saeli, Second Vice President: Ms. Saeli has been an officer of the NBTO for the past 18 years. She has held the position of Secretary, Second Vice President, and has served as the First Vice President for the past 10 years. She has been an elementary Special Education Teacher in the district for the past 21 years and has worked in

New Ofﬁcers Installed Woods Road, Belmont Elementary and W.E. Deluca. Currently Ms. Saeli is a traveling Resource Room teacher between Woods Road Elementary and W.E. Deluca. She has served on several NBTO Committees; the most impressive, she has been the chair of the Public Relations Committee for the past 10 years. Liz Golden, Treasure: Ms. Golden has been employed by the North Babylon School District for sixteen years. During this time she was Union Rep in Robert Moses Middle School for a period of four years and has also been the NBTO Treasurer for four years. Prior to working in North Babylon, Ms. Golden was employed in New York City where she was a UFT Chapter Leader. Rich Willis, Secretary: Mr. Willis is a North Babylon graduate and has been a teacher at Social Studies Teacher at Robert Moses Middle School for over 17 years. He has been a role of building representative since 2008. He has served as building representative, an active member of The APPR Committee and attended meetings held by NYSUT to educate members and listen to our concerns. In addition, Mr. Willis was vocal in the push to get the NBTO involved in the Opt-Out movement.

Jake Adams, a sophomore at West Babylon High School of West Babylon is a Delegate of the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Lowell, MA on June 29th through July 1st, 2016. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be scientists and technologists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Jake Adams was nominated by the winner of the first Google Science Fair, Shree Bose - Academic Director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists - to represent New York based on his academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.
