As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant.

From grading papers and preparing special activities, to meeting with parents and running afterschool clubs, teachers spend countless hours outside of class ensuring their students’ success. Presiding Officer Gregory believes that exceptional teachers should be recognized and encouraged, so near the end of every school year his office reaches out to schools in the 15th legislative district in search of these extraordinary educators. The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know

is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this non-profit. They truly believe mental health is as important as physical health. MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. All who attend will receive breakfast and the chance to win prizes throughout the day. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walk-ins, it is $5 and for children under 12, it is free. FIELD OF FLAGS - The Sons of Italy in America, Constantino Brumidi Lodge No. 2211 in

Deer Park celebrated Memorial Day with other community organizations in Deer Park/North Babylon by participating in the VFW Memorial Day Parade. This year, the Lodge sponsored a “Field of Flags.” The field of 99 Flags are displayed in front of the Lodge from Memorial Day to Flag Day. Each flag has an individual sponsorship in memory a loved one that served in the armed forces. The lodge intends to continue this Field of Flags year after year and hopes that members of the community will participate in the sponsorships.

CAKE CREATION - Baskin Robbins recently held its first official nationwide Cake Decorating Contest. In May, Noura Adla was selected as the winner by Jason Maceda, Senior Vice-President at Baskin Robbins, out of 165 entries for her Swirls & Twirls Cone Cake design. Noura has been employed at Dunkin Donuts in North Babylon by owner Michael Imperato for the last 11 years. She studied cake decorating in NYC and hopes to pursue a career in the field.
