For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick
off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. As the show opens with the song named in tribute, Runyonland, the lights come up on a truly entertaining evening of song and dance. In this production, the Argyle has built a true gem. With the stage filled with thousands of light bulbs, the only thing that shines brighter than the scenery - which mimics the streets of old Broadway - are the performances of their professional actors pulled fresh from the streets of NEW Broadway. Getting to this point was no mean feat for the Perlman family, who have put several millions of dollars and countless late-evening hours into the project. But if you talk to them, their passion for and commitment to the performing arts is infectious, which no doubt contributed to their ability to surround themselves with a hardworking team of
seasoned professionals both for their in-house Argyle keeps moving east through Europe for staff, and for the production teams hired for Spring Awakening, catching a glimpse into the torments and explorations of youth in their individual productions. Healthy Never Tasted So Good! All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult. The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. I enjoy eating my homemade Lean & Green meal (3 servings of vegetables and 5-7 ounces of a lean protein), but trying to find that type of meal while dining out has been challenging. Most fast food restaurants focus on convenience and not nutrition. Nutrition is key to living a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something that I have changed significantly since losing 110 lbs. The fast food business is evolving, and more healthy choices are starting to become available. I had the
pleasure of dining at a recently opened restaurant, CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale, last week. They are focused on offering only the best foods and preparing them fresh on the spot. So many options to choose from - green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, freshly made beverages... the portions are hearty and satiating. You are able to make your own bowl or plate, choosing whichever fresh ingredients you prefer; you can also choose one of their creations from the menu, which can be customized as well. This place really appeals to me. I can choose all the components of my meal, and I know they are fresh, nutrientdense ingredients, perfect for my needs. For my dining choice, I

chose the Tuna Poke Fire Bowl. It comes with Ahi tuna poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice). I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining. The Association for Mental Health & Wellness
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this nonprofit that believes mental health is
as important as physical health at 631.226.3900. They strive to ensure that all their local needs and voices are not only heard, but also recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups and educational organizations in our region! If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden! Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? MHAW has an upcoming event, which has sponsorship and vendor opportunities available! This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. They leverage the resources of communities, schools and businesses to match youth with volunteer mentors who are screened and trained. As the NYS Mentoring Program wraps up the 2017-2018 school year, they are starting to work on their Fall programs. Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some
carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that
incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

Accomplished Staff Members During the May 7th Babylon School District Board of Education meeting, two Babylon School District staff members were celebrated by the community for both their accomplishments and for their commitment to enhancing education for students. Babylon Elementary School first-grade teacher Yanirez Rodriguez was presented with a certificate courtesy of the Board of Education for being recognized by Sen. Phil Boyle as a “Teacher of Excellence” at his annual Teacher of Excellence Awards Dinner. Ms. Rodriguez has been with the district for more than 10 years and is credited with being involved
in multiple district committees, and greatly assisting with English as a New Language students in her native Spanish language in an effort to build confidence among students. “She is always championing the finest instructional practices to advance student growth,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “She makes sure that the students meet their benchmarks as firstgrade learners, and, more importantly, she really knows how to make that connection with parents and families of the students that she has in her class.” Additionally, former Babylon Junior-Senior
High School football coach Hans Wiederkehr was recognized for being inducted into the 2018 Suffolk County Sports Athletic Hall of Fame. During his time as coach from 1988-2002, the football team reached the playoffs 12 times and won nine league titles. Mr. Wiederkehr committed 32 years of his life to the Babylon School District working multiple educational buildings. While in district, he served such roles as physical education teacher, district director of interscholastic athletics, physical education and health and as an administrative assistant at Babylon Memorial Grade School. He will be retiring this
year. “Hans has done amazing work as both a teacher and a football coach on Long Island,” said Mrs. Rozzi. “You’re not just retiring from Babylon, but you’re
going on to wonderful things too, and just know that we valued all the times you’ve been teaching here.”

Vets Hall of Fame Senator John E. Brooks inducted Wyandanch resident US Army Major Jorge L. Rosario (ret.) into the New York State Veteran’s Hall of Fame today for his commitment to our nation and his efforts to help his community. The ceremony was held Tuesday, May 15th, 2018 at the New York State Capitol in Albany. “Major Rosario showed tremendous courage through some of the most difficult battles of the last 22 years” said Senator Brooks. “His dedicated service in the US Army, as well as his work to benefit the future of his community’s youth and his caring for our veterans serves as a shining example deserving recognition in the Veterans Hall of Fame. I am honored to award this highly-decorated and altruistic gentleman who has done so much to serve his nation and community to the utmost of his ability. Jorge Rosario is a role model for all publicspirited Americans.” Major Rosario enlisted in the United States Army in 1995, later achieving the rank of Sergeant as a military policeman; was commissioned as an Officer in 2003 in the JAG Corps and retired from the Army in 2017, having served in both reserve and active duty status for
22 years. Mr. Rosario was activated immediately after 9/11 to secure sites in New York City. He is a veteran of Operation Noble Eagle 2002, with the 306th Military Police. He served in Operation Enduring Freedom 2011 in Afghanistan as a Captain and member of the 10th Mountain Infantry Division in the area of International Operational Law. Rosario, an attorney, worked alongside NATO forces to provide expertise on Operational Law issues. Rosario is highly decorated and the recipient of many significant awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer’s Professional Development Ribbon, Armed Reserve Medal with Bronze Hourglass, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Overseas Training Ribbon. Currently, the retired Major serves as Bureau Chief Supervising Attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County’s Children’s Law Bureau, where he represents children, some of whom have endured severe trauma, and their
rights and interests in the Suffolk Family Court. He has served as a volunteer basketball coach for St. Patrick’s CYO program in Bay Shore for more than six years and as a volunteer baseball coach. Jorge recently started a not-for-profit, WyandanchWheatley Heights Baseball & Sports Initiatives to provide low-income children with sports exercise and alternatives to negative activities. He also supports youth by working with the Outreach Center in Wyandanch to provide summer camp experiences for local children. He is an active member, Adjutant and new Commander for VFW Post 2912 in Wheatley Heights. Earlier this year, with Senator Brooks, Jorge and the VFW Post held a Veteran’s Job and Resource Fair. Rosario also coordinates with attorneys providing free or low cost legal representation to veterans. Jorge has coordinated with Rothco and its employees, with thousands of dollars donated to Veterans Homeless Shelter and an Outreach Center, to provide many community services, including a place for the homeless to eat, sleep and get out of the winter cold

Coca-Cola Scholar West Babylon Senior High School student Eric Donohue has been named a 2018 Coca-Cola Scholar. Each year, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation awards 150 scholars with a $20,000 scholarship to be used toward postsecondary education. This year, 150,000 applicants applied for
the 150 scholarships. The scholarship is based on merit, academics, extracurricular involvement, community service and leadership. After the initial application, the applicant pool reduces to about 2,000 students, then the next round of applications advance 250 students to an interview
process in which the 150 scholars are selected. Scholars attended a leadership weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, in April, where they participated in leadership development training, and visited attractions in Atlanta, including the World of Coca-Cola Museum.
