Home Garden A Guide To Buying And Setting Up A Bird Bath Warm weather means more opportunities to spend time outdoors while at home. Whether your favorite form of outdoor recreation includes sitting on the patio reading or digging in the garden, there’s a good chance that you will be sharing the space with local wildlife. Optimizing opportunities to view and interact with backyard wildlife can make the great outdoors even more enjoyable. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology indicates that there are around 2,059 bird species on the continent of North America. Red-winged blackbirds, yellowrumped warblers, American robins, and chipping sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds in North America. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction. Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds

require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. There are four general types of bird baths: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted, and ground-level. In general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water birds use are on or near the ground. Therefore, groundlevel bird baths may be the best investments. It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow (around two inches of water or less). This enables birds to splash

around safely and wade in. Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris. Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.

Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10-week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations. With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the

run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20. The Order of the Sons and Daughters of Italy, Constantino Brumidi Lodge N0. 2211 in Deer Park through its catering company, Brumidi Catering Corporation cooked meals for 225 Health Care Workers at the Maria Regina Nursing Home located in St. Joseph’s Convent on Brentwood Road in Brentwood. The funding for the meals was generously donated by the Suffolk County Conference Knights of Columbus which represents over 50 Councils in Suffolk County. The meals included penne-ala-vodka, pork with rice, sausage

and peppers, potatoes, and vegetables. The food was carefully packed for 3 work shifts; the day shift, the 3:00pm to 11:00pm shift and the midnight shift. Administrators provided information on the number of employees working in each shift. The hot food was delivered on Thursday, May 21st, 2020 for the day shift, and Nursing Home staff reheated the food for the remaining two shifts at the appropriate times. This was one small way the Knights of Columbus chose to show thanks to the healthcare workers at Maria Regina during the pandemic. The food

was delivered by Brumidi Catering. Carmine Soldano, President of the Constantino Brumidi Lodge and also the Treasurer of the Suffolk County Conference Knights of Columbus over saw the delivery of the food and met with some of the administration at Maria Regina. “This is a great example how two great organizations can help each other and work together to show our gratitude to our Health Care workers.” The meals were enjoyed immensely by nursing home staff.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from

the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
