Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), in partnership with Colored Colors, present a multi-location art exhibit throughout the Town of Babylon. Cafeinspired works created by local artists are on view at six coffee shops until June 18, 2021. Sponsorship is provided by the Town of Babylon LDC. Along with the art, there will be pop-up events and live music during the tour, which will be announced on the BACCA website, https://www.babylonarts. org/cafe-d-art-tour, and on social media. A map of the Town of Babylon with the locations of the participating cafes is available for download on the website, as well as a complete list of the 35 local artists whose work is available for viewing and for sale during the tour, links to the cafes and information about tour specials. To promote the Tour, cafe-goers are encouraged to obtain a punch card when they make a purchase at any of the participating cafes. They can then take the card to the other five locations during the tour period to be punched. When their card is completed it can be entered to win a “small business” basket giveaway. Opening weekend was May 15 - 17, 2021. BACCA was able to promote the

tour at a booth during the Babylon Village ’Spring Fling Arts and Music Festival’ on Saturday, May 15th. North Babylon Senior Honored For Excellence In Theatre North Babylon High School senior Gabriella Felice has been selected as a nominee in the Roger Rees Awards Discover Talent Initiative. The Roger Rees Awards is a student award program that recognizes excellence in student performance and achievement in high school theatre. As a nominee in the vocal discipline, Felice will participate in coaching sessions and program activities including workshops and panels with professionals in the industry. Nominees will then upload video submissions of workshopped material. Students have the opportunity to be awarded private coaching, master classes, precollege scholarships, or professional auditions through this program. Felice is an accomplished member of the North Babylon theatre program. She is the Drama Club President and President of North Babylon’s International Thespian

Gabriella Felice Society Chapter, Troupe #3370. Over the years, Felice has co-directed productions of Disney and Dinner, where members of the Drama Club provide an evening of entertainment to

elementary school students. Recently, she served as an assistant director to the virtual spring production, One Last Time, in which she also performed. Felice is also a member of the high school’s select choir, Vocal Point. Outside of school, she is involved in productions at the South Shore Theatre Experience. Her talent has not gone unnoticed, as Felice was recently recognized with an Award of Merit in the Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar Artist Program.
