Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today.

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help.

From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a

Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present.

Souring In Science The Babylon School District is pleased to announce that four of Babylon’s students were awarded scholarship monies at the Town of Babylon’s and Covantage EcoTech’s Scholarship Contest during their annual Earth Day celebration held on May 4. The program, which is open to any student residing within the Town of Babylon, focuses on scientific research done in the fields of sustainable energy or environmental-

based research. Babylon Junior Senior High School 11th graders Erin Corcoran, Madaline Graham and Nicole Santucci earned a $100 scholarship for “The Effect of Different Concentrations of Oxybenzone on Ulva lactuca.” Babylon Memorial Grade School sixth grader Olivia Muller earned a $175 scholarship for investigating, “Which material biodegrades the fastest in salt water?,” which addressed the environmental impact

of degrading common household items in salt water ecosystems. Additionally, Olivia Muller placed first in the Grade School Science Fair, advancing to the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Elementary Science Fair. “Congratulations to all representing Babylon science,” said Director of Science Melissa Callahan. “We are looking forward to seeing what their future scientific endeavors have in store.”

GOOD DEEDS - Babylon Memorial Grade School Student Council members recently went on a field trip to benefit those in need as part of the “Kids United Against Hunger” initiative. This program provides young people with the opportunity to volunteer at the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge to assist and sort food, personal care items, household supplies, pet food and school supplies. After volunteering, the goods are then delivered to Long Island Cares’ network of 590 community-based member agencies. Excellence In French The Babylon School District is thrilled to announce that three Babylon Junior-Senior High School students took home the top three placements during the Long Island Language Teachers Student World Language Competition 2019.

The district congratulates Isabela Gaskill (first place, Vocal Performance – French), Julia Drake (second place, Vocal Performance – French) and Lauren Wilkens (third place, Vocal Performance – French). In order to enter the competition, the students

submitted videos of themselves singing in French, which impressed the judges so much that they were declared winners based on their efforts. The students were awarded with medals and certificates as prizes for their victories.

Sharing A Love For Poetry out of books, students recited both classic poetry and original works. They also called upon classmates to do the same. Babylon Junior Senior High School Principal Al Cirone, Assistant Principal Jennifer Mangone and English teacher Michael Birnbaum were just some of the faculty members who recited poetry for all to hear. As an additional dynamic component to the fun-filled day, student members of both the band and orchestra provided musical accompaniment, welcoming classes to the event as they arrived.

“It has been one of my goals as an educator and as the director of ELA to take a humanitiesbased approach to learning, in which there is an integration of many disciplines exploring and engaging in a specific topic,” said District Director of English Language Arts Teresa Collins. According to Mrs. Collins, there are plans to incorporate a modified version of Poem in Your Pocket Day to both the Babylon Elementary School and Babylon Memorial Grade School in the near future.
