A sunny day and beautiful temperatures brought Wyandanch Memorial High School students outside to plant marigolds, hostas and more in the flower beds at the entrance of the high school for its annual Beautification Day. Led by the high school’s life skills classes, students from the Kappa League, Future Leaders, One World, the Honor Society, JROTC and the track team joined in and picked up their shovels to plant for the growing season. High School Principal Mr. Paul Sibblies, along
with Life Skills teachers Ms. Beverly Harper-Lewis and Ms. Evette James, worked to organize the event with plant donations, gardening tools, mulch and other necessary items for gardening. In addition, several high school teachers who have a passion for gardening joined the student clubs and teams to beautify the beds. “Beautification Day is an important event for us,” Mr. Sibblies said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had this many groups or students participating, and we are so

BABYLON VILLAGE MARKS HISTORIC SITES - On Saturday, April 24th, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined the Village of Babylon Historical & Preservation Society and members of the Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club for the unveiling of two historical site plaques. The first plaque was placed in recognition of the Marconi Shed, where communications with ocean vessels was conducted back in 1902. The shed also played host to a number of training courses for radio operators. The second plaque commemorates the first 50 mile auto race sanctioned by the American Auto Club in 1900. Ironically, the winner drove an electric car and outpaced its gas and steam powered completion by nearly 15 minutes! Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. If you are interested in volunteering with Hope House Ministries individually or with a group, here are just some of the areas you can do so: Office Work, Cooking, Photography, Transportation for Residents, Maintenance, Gardening/Farming/ Grounds Keeping, Transportation for Furniture/Donation Pick Up. for you or your group to volunteer! Additionally, you can donate at any time to Hope House Ministries. The idea of non-profits asking for donations can become stale and repetitive, but it really is so important for us to give financially to non-profits that rely a large amount on donations instead of grant money. Here’s two reasons why you may want to consider giving to this organization: What if this was personal? Imagine your son or daughter, your grandchildren, your own brother or sister, or parent experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence or severe depression. Imagine your family torn apart by circumstances out of your control. If you were connected to a crisis situation you would be very comforted to know that an entire community of supporters have made it possible for your loved one to find professional help and healing free of charge. So consider joining that network of support and be a part of the Hope House Ministries’ family. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. LOCAL LEGISLATORS ATTEND POLICE COMMISSIONER RETIREMENT - On Friday, May 7th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Legislators Tom Donnelly, Susan Berland, and Sarah Anker at Suffolk County Police Department Headquarters for the walkout ceremony of Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart. Commissioner Hart is a true trailblazer, who served as the first female to lead the department and spent the last three years taking charge of matters such as community policing, anti-corruption, police reform, MS-13, and even the Gilgo serial killings case. Thank you, Commissioner Hart, for all you have done for our County and best of luck in your new endeavors! North Babylon UFSD Establishes Contact-Free Student Registration Process For 2021-22 School Year
The North Babylon Union Free School District has established a contact-free process for student registration in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Families can register their students in kindergarten through 12th grade without the need to visit one of the district buildings. The preferred method of registration is by using the district’s online portal found at www. northbabylonschools. net. To access the portal, parents or guardians must head to the district website and navigate the
menu option at the top of the page, then under the “Parents” section, click “Registration.” To complete registration, parents or guardians must fill out the online application and email or mail the required documents including the child’s birth certificate, parent/guardian photo ID, immunization records from the child’s doctor and proof of residency. Documents can be emailed to registration@ northbabylonschools.net or mailed to North Babylon UFSD Attn: Registration Office at 5 Jardine Place North Babylon, NY 11703.
Town of Babylon Looking for Resident Feedback on Recreational Marijuana Sales
For further information on registration, call the Office of Student Data Services at (631)620-7038. If families do not have access to a computer or the internet, they can call that number to request a registration packet to be mailed. Registration for the 2021-22 school year is ongoing, but it’s asked that families register student as soon as possible. To be eligible for registration, children must be five years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2021.

While the adult use of marijuana is currently legal across New York State, local municipalities will have the ability to block the sale of the substance within their borders. The Town Board must make its decision before the end of the year. If the town does decide to opt out at the end of 2021, it can opt in the following year. However, if the town opts in at the end of 2021, they can no longer opt out at any time. “It was only a matter of time until we were forced with facing the legalization of marijuana in New York,” said Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “As we work
toward a decision of whether or not to allow the sale of recreational marijuana within our borders, we feel its important to hear from our residents as there are strong, valid arguments on both sides of the debate,” he added.
