WEST BABYLON JUNIOR NAMED ROGER REES FINALIST - West Babylon Senior High School junior Ronan Flynn has been named one of the top 50 finalists for the Roger Rees Awards, a competition that recognizes excellence in musical theater productions in high schools. Flynn was chosen for his portrayal of Lumiere in “Beauty and the Beast” this past February. Flynn, along with 25 other high school females and 24 males, will attend coaching sessions in New York City with Broadway producers, casting and musical directors in mid-May to prepare material. Most of their programming is devoted to revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.

Despite the word Suffolk in its name, the agency operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. One such initiative is its Services for People with Developmental Disabilities program. As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “developmental disabilities” are a group of conditions arising from an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions typically begin during a young child’s developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime. EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities aimed at enhancing their quality of life. Its specially trained staff will customize a program to help maximize each person’s ability to live with independence and self-sufficiency. In addition, personalized case management helps to ensure that individuals receive the government benefits to which they are eligible. The overall offering has six components: Community Habilitation Services: Under this program, EOC of Suffolk provides individuals with support and services that focus on developing life skills and community integration.

services target higher-functioning individuals who require minimal support. Participants receive monthly subsidies to help them live a more independent life in the community. Respite Services: EOC of Suffolk provides temporary relief from the demands of caregiving, helping to reduce overall family stress. The program helps families provide uninterrupted care for their loved one with a developmental disability. Respite/Recreation: This service component provides educational, occupational and recreational activities, as well as opportunities to increase socialization skills. Services take place on-site as well as on ﬁeld trips to help enrich the learning process. Self-Directed and Fiscal Intermediary Services: This program empowers individuals to exercise the maximum amount of control over the types of support and services they wish to receive. They also have a voice in the selection of providers and in how services are provided. Working with employers and funding agencies, people with developmental disabilities can engage as full citizens in communities of their choosing. EOC of Suffolk can also arrange for the services of a Fiscal Intermediary for individuals who have chosen self-direction – supplemented by administrative and billing support. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that several Long Island State Parks will remain open during the nighttime hours for viewing of the Tau Herculid Meteor Shower on the evening of Monday, May 30 into predawn hours of Tuesday, May 31, 2022. There will be no charge and the normal star gazing permit will not be required. You must remain in the parking lot near your vehicle. We suggest

Babylon IDA Raises Over $50,000.00 In Support Of Ukraine’s Refugees The Town of Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) recently held a fundraising auction at the Belfast Gastro Pub in Lindenhurst to Support Ukraine’s Refugees. The fundraiser was the culmination of a two month fundraising effort by the IDA and the Babylon business community. The IDA is continuing to collect donations for this cause, and the total raised so far is $50,470.00. The money will be presented to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lindenhurst, which will distribute it to refugee assistance groups in Poland and other

neighboring countries where an estimated 5.4 million Ukrainians are now living. “As the IDA, our relationships in the Town are with the business community. Time and time again we call on our local businesses to aid our fundraising efforts, and those calls are always answered with full support,” said Babylon IDA CEO Tom Dolan. “The business community deserves a round of applause for their efforts in support of such a worthy cause.” The Churches Reverend Olvian Popovici described

Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www. licares.org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters,

The Town of Babylon recently thanked the West Babylon Lions Club for hosting a food dive to benefit the town’s food pantry in North Amityville. When the organization heard that the pantry was in need of donations, the leaders sprang into action and began collecting food

and other items. Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Terence McSweeney and members of the Human Services Department were on-hand accept and thank the club for all of its efforts to keep the pantry stocked and supplied. The town food pantry operates by donation

only and is located at the Department of Human Services, one Commerce Boulevard in North Amityville. The pantry accepts items year round and the most needed items include: peanut butter, jelly, tuna, canned vegetables, soup, pasta, sauce, rice and beans.

SENIORS COMMIT TO POST-SECONDARY PLANS - Sixteen seniors from Babylon Junior-Senior High School were recognized for their post-secondary plans at a letter of intent and military signing ceremony in the school’s library on May 5. JoseLuis Rivera has committed to joining the Navy upon graduation. As a result of their unwavering commitment both in the classroom and on the athletic field, 15 seniors were recently selected to continue their athletic journeys at some of the nation’s premier schools this fall. In recognition of this honor, the seniors were joined by proud family members, district administrators and staff members as they put pen to paper and signed letters of intent committing themselves to play college-level sports.
