Words Of Thanks Babylon Memorial Grade School fifth-grade students in Nancy Murphy’s and Chris Tordy’s classes helped to honor the 61 veterans taking the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in May by creating letters of appreciation and gratitude. The program, which works to pay tribute to America’s veterans for their sacrifices, transports heroes to D.C. to visit and

reflect at their memorials. The process came about after a class parent – Susan Kenny – delivered a presentation on her family’s work with the Honor Flight. Ms. Kenny spoke with the classes about veterans, what it means to be courageous and brave, and called for the students to reflect on the everyday heroes in their lives. Additionally,

the classes discussed the mail call procedure used in the armed forces and how meaningful it was for the soldiers to receive mail from home. As a part of the gradelevel’s English language arts curriculum, the teachers discussed proper letter writing techniques and assisting the students with crafting their letters.

Babylon Memorial Grade School Current Events teams ranked top in the nation during this year’s series of National Current Events League competitions. Competing in four meets this year, the two teams dominated to capture first place (fifth-

grade team) and fourth place (sixth-grade team) honors. To prepare for the league’s four contests, which consist of 30 multiple choice questions, the teams worked with teacher and league adviser Stephen Fasciani.

National Placement As questions spanned a variety of areas – including international and national affairs, arts and entertainment, science and math, business and finance, and sports and health – the students were required to be well-versed in all content areas.

As an extra incentive for her students to participate in this year’s Parents As Reading Partners program, North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School Principal Norann McManus added a special principal’s challenge as a reward. If the entire student body, along with their adult reading partners, read more than a combined 70,000 minutes in the month of April, Mrs. McManus would

participate in a challenge as voted upon by the students. With more than 101,000 minutes read, far exceeding their original goal, and all of the challenge votes counted, Mrs. McManus was ready for her challenge. On May 2nd, Mrs. McManus participated in the pie in the face principal’s challenge. Gathered together on the lawn outside of the gymnasium, the entire student body

cheered loudly as the top two readers per grade level pied the principal in the face. “Anything for the kids,” said Mrs. McManus. “If this challenge gets them excited to read, then I’m up for it.” The theme for this year’s PARP was “Spring Into Reading” and was organized by reading teacher Jayne Garvin and third-grade teacher Kelly Gregorio.

Running & Winning This spring, 14 students from Diana Simulcki’s social studies classes at North Babylon High School had the opportunity to attend a comprehensive workshop hosted by the League of Women of Huntington Voters. The program, “Running and

Winning,” was designed to introduce the students to politics and public service as viable career choices through dialogues and discussions with elected public female officials from the Town of Huntington and Suffolk County. During their time at the

workshop, the students worked in groups to interview two officials and were also tasked with presenting their own virtual candidate. Each virtual candidate had a personal history, campaign speech, logo and bumper sticker.

RUNNING & WINNING - Fourteen students from Diana Simulcki’s social studies classes at North Babylon High School had the opportunity to attend a comprehensive workshop hosted by the League of Women of Huntington Voters.

Alumni Career Night also connect to NBHS. This year, students heard from professionals in the areas of architecture, accounting, graphic design, nursing, education, speech pathology, law, personal fitness and training, pharmacology and banking. According to NBHS science teacher and Class

of 1994 alum Elizabeth Luna, “This event is a huge success because it gives our current students an incredible opportunity to meet North Babylon’s finest graduates. It also gives our students the ability to speak with professionals about their careers in a friendly environment.”

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently presented local students with scholarship prizes for their environmental science projects at the Town’s Annual Earth Day Celebration. Joining Supervisor Schaffer in presenting the scholarships were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino. Ten scholarship prizes were presented to thirteen students from schools within the Town of Babylon as part of the

annual Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest. This scholarship program is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta, which operates the energy-fromwaste facility in West Babylon. It is designed to encourage students who are doing science fair projects or advanced study projects in environmental science courses to focus on renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative building materials or any other means to reduce global warming and environmental degradation. This year’s contest featured over fifty projects by students from seventh to twelfth grade from

school districts across the Town. The top three prizes this year were all claimed from students from Babylon Junior-Senior High School. Two years ago, the school received a sizeable donation from local nursing home owner Theresea Santmann for a dedicated science lab, which has led to projects from the school being showcased as part of exhibits at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Rockefeller University in New York City. Deputy Superintendent Peter Daly, Principal Al Cirone and teacher Claire Birone were in attendance for the scholarship presentation, where they were honored for their schools great accomplishments.

Also recognized at this year’s event was science teacher Dr. Daniel Leccese of Copiague Middle School, who had the highest rate of participation in this year’s competition. There were twenty seven projects submitted to this year’s competition from Dr. Leccese’s classes. Celebrating Our Earth On Saturday, May 3rd, the Town of Babylon’s Annual Earth Celebration was held at Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst, with hundreds of residents and dozens of vendors in attendance – making this year’s event the most successful one yet. Over thirty vendors and booths were set up on the lawn of Town Hall to display various environmental displays and giveaways for guests. In attendance for the event were Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino. Thirty two booths and presentations were set-up for residents to experience and learn about environmental issues. Representatives from Town’s Department of Environmental Control were on-hand to showcase the Town’s environmental efforts, including the successful

Long Island Green Homes program, the Geiger Lake Park Redevelopment, and storm water management programs. Residents were provided with free “pooper scoopers” and reusable grocery bags made from recycled materials. The Town Animal Shelter was also in

part in this year’s event, including two groups Suffolk County Community College. The college’s Community Service Club painted, prepared and raffled off residential rain barrels, which collect storm water from roofs for preservation and reuse. Also from Suffolk County Community College was Phi Theta Kappa, who collected old sneakers for Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program, which recycles athletic shoes for use in innercity playgrounds and sports courts across the country. Students from North Babylon High School’s Environmental Science program also had a booth to display some of their environmental projects while representatives from the West Babylon Main Street Organization sold plants to residents in honor of Mother’s Day. Also on-hand were businesses and vendors, such as Lowe’s Home Improvement and Vivant Solar, to display attendance with pets from the shelter that are currently their “green” products, some of which were raffled off. looking for their new homes. As part of their curriculum, Babylon High School 10th-grade honors English students have been learning about personal narratives and memoirs throughout this year. With the help of teacher Lisa Drance, the classes have been identifying the differences between the two genres – noting that memoirs are more reflective and hold symbolic meaning, while personal narratives contain a true beginning, middle and end – as well as focusing on the importance of a strong lead, figurative language

and imagery. As part of their writing workshop, the students had the chance to put their lessons into action and created original works based on one of these categories. In an effort to provide authentic learning opportunities about the publishing process and to enable the students to become involved in the larger writing community, the classes were encouraged to submit their completed pieces to a number of online and print outlets. Submissions by

Christina Krisberg and Victoria Buonagura were selected and featured on Teen Ink, the National Council of Teachers of English online publication. Christina’s piece, Early Morning Hours received high scores from readers, was given the Editors’ Choice award and featured

on the front page of the website’s memoirs section. Victoria’s piece The Distance Between Us was designated with an Editors’ Choice award and also featured on the homepage of the site’s College Essay section.
