abylon High School seniors and staff members celebrated National College Decision Day in a spirited way on May 1st. The soon-to-be graduates donned apparel from the school they will be attending this fall. Teachers and staff wore shirts from their alma mater or from the colleges and universities that their own children attend. Many also used this as a teaching moment to reflect upon the seniors’ time in Babylon.

the Mass by discussing the meaning of a child’s First Holy Communion and welcoming all of the communicants to continue celebrating each week with Saints Cyril and Methodius by coming to Sunday Mass dressed in their First Holy Communion attire, as a poignant and beautiful reminder to our SSCM community of the beginnings of our faith and of the blessings bestowed on each of them that day.
It was no ordinary lesson on the world’s rain forests for West Babylon thirdgrader Tristan Cabrera. He received a surprise visit at South Bay Elementary School on April 29th from older brother, U.S. Marine Corporal David Cabrera, who has been stationed at Camp Pendleton, California for several months after a tour of duty in Iraq. Corporal Cabrera appeared in the classroom full of students
wearing the West Babylon School District mascot costume and introduced as a “special guest.” After introducing the mascot, Ms. Brett asked Tristan to help the guest take off the head portion of the costume. Upon realizing his brother was inside, his kind gesture resulted in hugs and tears of gratitude. ‘The students have been studying the rain forests and the colorful birds that
live there,” teacher Carol Brett explained. “I thought it would be a great surprise for Tristan to have his brother give an appearance in the bird outfit. It was also fun for the rest of the class.” During Corporal Cabrera’s visit, the students also had the opportunity to ask Corporal Cabrera about what it is like to be in the military and about his experiences oversees.

As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors
Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.
