The North Babylon Union Free School District has established a contact-free process for student registration in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Families can register their students in kindergarten through 12th grade without the need to visit one of the

district buildings. The preferred method of registration is by using the district’s online portal found at www. northbabylonschools. net. To access the portal, parents or guardians must head to the district website and navigate the menu option at the top

of the page, then under the “Parents” section, click “Registration.” To complete registration, parents or guardians must fill out the online application and email or mail the required documents including the child’s birth certificate, parent/

guardian photo ID, immunization records from the child’s doctor and proof of residency. Documents can be emailed to registration@ northbabylonschools. net or mailed to North Babylon UFSD Attn: Registration Office at 5 Jardine Place North

Babylon, NY 11703. For further information on registration, call the Office of Student Data Services at (631)6207038. If families do not have access to a computer or the internet, they can call that number to request a registration

packet to be mailed. Registration for the 2021-22 school year is ongoing, but it’s asked that families register student as soon as possible. To be eligible for registration, children must be five years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2021.

Boy Scout Troop 399 Honored Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station), along with Town of Babylon officials Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terry McSweeney honored local Boy Scout Troop 399 for their watershed clean-up efforts in North Babylon in a ceremony at Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst on Saturday, May 1. Under the direction of Scoutmaster Joseph Fatuzzo and Assistant Scoutmaster Jimmy White, in coordination with Babylon Chief Environmental Analyst Richard Groh and Andrew Mirchel of Save the Great South Bay, the scouts cleaned out both artificial debris and natural obstacles in the water to increase the flow of the southern portion of Sumpwams Creek along Longfellow Avenue in North Babylon on Saturday, April 24. “By volunteering to participate in this cleanup, these scouts showed not only commitment to community, but to our local environment as well,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank all those involved for ensuring the area that we love remains just as beautiful as always.”

Town of Babylon Looking for Resident Feedback on Recreational Marijuana Sales Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board have opened a portal on the town’s website to receive resident feedback regarding the new recreational marijuana legislation recently signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The Town Board cites the need to hear different perspectives from community stakeholders before deciding whether or not to opt out of the sale of the substance in the Town of Babylon. While the adult use of marijuana is currently legal across New York State, local municipalities

will have the ability to block the sale of the substance within their borders. The Town Board must make its decision before the end of the year. If the town does decide to opt out at the end of 2021, it can opt in the following year. However, if the town opts in at the end of 2021, they can no longer opt out at any time. “It was only a matter of time until we were forced with facing the legalization of marijuana in New York,” said Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “As we work toward a decision of whether or not to allow the sale of recreational marijuana within our borders, we feel

its important to hear from our residents as there are strong, valid arguments on both sides of the debate,” he added. Supervisor Schaffer, who also acts as Chairman of the Suffolk County Supervisors Association, regularly discusses options with his fellow town leaders across Long Island as well as the recently-convened New York State Office of Cannabis Management.
