Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called ﬂavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does ﬂy. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently threw out the first pitch at the Long Island Ducks first home game of the season against the New Britain Bees. For the third year in a row, the home opener kicked off Suffolk County’s “Heroes of the Game” program, where a local veteran or active duty service member is honored during a live in-game tribute for their dedication and service to our country. The “Hero of the Game” who was honored during the home opener was Anthony Dellvalle, who served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy from 1986-2001. Anthony is currently a member of the American Legion and also assists veterans with the filing of disability claims and obtaining benefits. Veterans and active duty personnel can register to be recognized as of one of the Heroes of the Game by contacting Melissa Pandolf at 631.853.VETS or through email at Melissa.Pandolf@ suffolkcountyny.gov. Joint Tribute In honor of NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, who was killed in the line of duty last November, the West Islip and North Babylon varsity baseball teams and their respective communities joined together on April 24th to play a tribute baseball game at Bethpage Ballpark. Both teams wore custom

jerseys adorned with Sgt. Tuozzolo’s badge number, and community support was strong, with more than 1,000 people in attendance. Throwing out the first pitch was the late sergeant’s wife, Lisa Tuozzolo, a North Babylon alumna and the assistant principal at West Islip High School, joined by her two

young sons, Austin and Joseph. Also in attendance was Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, who was wounded in the incident, but whose life was saved due to Sgt. Tuozzolo’s heroic actions. Money raised from the memorial game will help fund a scholarship in Sgt. Tuozzolo’s name in both communities.

Three teams from West Babylon Junior High School participated in the Team Packard STEM Challenge fundraising event hosted by Northport High School on April 29th. The West Babylon Junior High School teams raised

$1,139 for the Robert Packard Center at Johns Hopkins, a nonprofit organization that raises money and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). Each team competed in four events that challenged their problem-solving

skills, science knowledge and their understanding of math concepts. The West Babylon Eagles team members – Blake Ung, Ella Henson, Abigail Engrassia and Luc Iverson – took third place in the Unlock the Box event.
