May is truly a drag for the Long Island Gay Men’s Chorus (LIGMC) – but in the best possible way. May’s Charity of the Month is:
Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,
Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Celebrating Earth Day In celebration of Earth Day, students enrolled in Jennifer Brooks’ kindergarten class at Babylon Elementary School have been learning about the planet and ways to protect it.
In class, they discovered helpful ways to reduce, reuse and recycle materials. Additionally, they took part in an engaging project in which they looked through their recycling bins and selected
materials to recreate something else entirely. The kindergartners made piggy banks, pots for plants and even musical instruments with recycled items.
Top Students Named The Babylon School District is proud to announce that seniors Danish Farooq and Sophia Sherman have been named the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2018, respectively. Both Danish and Sophia were bestowed upon this high honor for their exceptional academic record,
commitment to success and devotion to higher learning throughout their academic careers at Babylon Junior-Senior High School. “The biggest thing about both of them is their level of involvement – both in our school and community,” said Babylon Junior-Senior High School
Principal Al Cirone. “Danish is really big on giving back and making this planet a better place for everyone, whereas with Sophia, any time a student is looking for a mentor or a tutor, her name pops up immediately. We just couldn’t be prouder of both of these incredible students.”

Tax Grievance Seminars In an effort to ensure that residents are aware of their right to challenge their property tax assessment, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently partnered with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to present a pair of informational forums on the property tax grievance process. These forums, which were held on April 20 in Wyandanch and on April 25th in Amityville, featured a presentation by John Wolham of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s
office of Real Property Tax Services. The presentation focused on breaking down the steps by which residents can challenge the assessed value of their homes into an easy-tounderstand, manageable process. The Office of Real Property Tax Services, a division within the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, oversees local assessment administration and works directly with county and municipal officials to improve the fairness of property assessments. In New York State, any
person who pays property taxes can grieve their tax assessment. Based on their excellent business-oriented skills, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students Danish Farooq, Agnes Goldin and Allie Van Rossem were invited to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the New York State DECA International Career Development Conference held in late April. During their attendance, Danish presented his winning Community
Service manual to the judges, while Agnes and Allie took tests on their topics and performed roleplaying activities in which they solved a particular business “problem.” The keynote speaker for the opening ceremony was Joseph Abboud, a fashion designer from Boston, Massachusetts, best known for his own line of menswear, as well as for his Men’s Wearhouse designs. He
spoke about perseverance and determination, and detailed his often-bumpy road to success. In addition, the conference offered the opportunity for the students to network with other students from throughout the United States, as well as some countries abroad. They were also able to interact with representatives from a variety of colleges, military branches and corporations.

New Members Inducted The Babylon School District would like to congratulate the 51 Babylon Junior-Senior High School students who were recently inducted into the school’s National Honor Society during a highly-attended ceremony held at Rowe Hall on April 19th. In order to qualify for the National Honor Society at Babylon, the following criteria must be met: an 89.5 unweighted cumulative average; 20 hours of
community service; a profound demonstration of character, leadership, and service through an application process and two teacher recommendations. “While being inducted into the National Honor Society is a testament of your scholarship, service, leadership and character, at this point on your educational path, it is also an opportunity for you to continue setting standards, reaching for your goals and continuing on the road to success,” said
