Arbor Day Celebration Babylon Rotary held its Annual Arbor Day celebration at the Parliament Place Elementary School in North Babylon. Josie Titcomb and Scott Lockwood greeted and distributed seedlings, planting and care instructions, and Arbor Day Proclamations to all of the first graders in
the school. Scott held the young audience in rapt attention with his traditional essay on Arbor Day history, arboreal insights, the importance of conservation, and the everyday utility of trees. This year we distributed 1400 seedlings to first graders. Over the nearly 40-
year history of the Arbor Day Program, Babylon Rotary has distributed about 95,000 seedlings to elementary school children in our service area. Many stately trees, planted and cared for over the years by eager students, can be seen throughout our community.

Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block. We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.
Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on
writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor and Parks and Recreation Chairman Tony Martinez announced that Babylon will be joining most other communities onLong Island by going digital with this year’s interactive Town of Babylon Parks and Recreation Guide. To maximize convenience for residents, hard copies of the guide are available to pick up at over 20 facilities throughout the town. This rollout effort means that no resident is more than two miles away from a pick up location. Supervisor Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Martinez estimate that the Town will save $30,000 in postage and printing by producing 50,000 less guides this year. The change also saves close to
two million pages of paper printed, reducing the environmental impact of producing these 35-page booklets. “Babylon’s parks and summer programs are, for many families, the number one reason to live in Babylon, so we want to make sure that every resident has access to this guide,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “In an effort to make this a comfortable transition, we made sure that no resident is further than a short drive away from a hard copy if they cannot access the internet,” he added. The interactive guide, first introduced last year, provides various advantages to the print version, most importantly the ability to link to other places on the internet.
“Our online guide is quite versatile,” said Deputy Supervisor Martinez. “Our residents can easily flip through the pages and sample the great lineup of bands we have booked for our famous Summer Concert Series, learn more about our facilities and easily register for different programs and services we offer throughout the season,” he added. Hard copies of the guide can be found at Town Hall, the Town Hall Annex, the Parks and Recreation Department Building, all Town senior centers and public libraries. Once summer is underway, they will also be available at Town beach and pool facilities.
Students at the Babylon Memorial Grade School viewed their reflections in a positive way due to the recently installed “Mirror Wall” which hangs on the school hallway for all to see. With assistance from technology teacher Danielle Weis, the wall was created not for vanity purposes, but so that
students begin to see themselves as a leader; harboring the qualities of a smart, empowered, determined, kind person with positive future aspirations. “Our goal is for students to look at themselves in a positive way and see their futures as bright and prosperous,” said Mrs. Weis. “I randomly selected
one student from grades 3-5 and those students had an opportunity to add splashes of color to mirror frames.” The frames now hang on the hallway for all to see, with the wonderful caption “Leader, Leader, on the wall, there’s a leader in us all!” lining the top of the installation.

ARBOR DAY ADVENTURES - In recognition of Arbor Day, first grade students from Babylon Elementary School recently took part in a holiday-appropriate nature activity with assistance from STEAM instructor Emily Moran. Prior to venturing outside to study the trees in the school’s courtyard, the students were asked to write in their STEAM journals and brainstorm as to why saplings are different from adult trees. Upon analyzing the trees outside, the students determined that adult trees are taller, have more leaves, and often show signs of wear from the natural elements of nature. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.
