WEST BABYLON FD HOSTS EASTER BUNNY BREAKFAST - On Sunday April 10th, Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature Kevin McCaffrey and a number of other local officials joined the members of the West Babylon Fire Department as they hosted their annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, continuing a long-standing tradition of creating memories for West Babylon’s youngest residents!

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), in partnership with Colored Colors, present a multilocation, self-guided tour and art exhibit throughout the Town of Babylon. Cafeinspired works created by local artists will be on view at six coffee shops from May 26, 2022 until June 26, 2022. The 2022 Cafe D’Art Tour is supported by public funding provided by Suffolk County. The development of this program was sponsored by the Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation as part of the Babylon Together project. Artists are invited to submit up to three (3) works of art in any medium, inspired by a cafe theme, for consideration to be displayed in local cafes across the Town of Babylon. Student And Staff Accolades Spotlighted In North Babylon The North Babylon Board of Education recognized several teachers and students to begin the April 12 meeting at Robert Moses Middle School. Superintendent Glen Eschbach said it was a time to “acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of our amazing students and staff.” The middle school’s saxophone quartet, which includes Jordan Iglio, Michael Kilono, Taylor McFarlane and Jordan Peck, was recognized for achieving a perfect score at the recent NYSSMA festival. The students, under the direction of teacher Teresa Pino, played their piece, “Irish Suite,” prior to the meeting. North Babylon High School’s string quintet also performed before the meeting. The ensemble,

consisting of seniors Wilensky Coleau, Spencer Mace and Amanda Quintanilla, along with juniors Gavin Aquino and Ashley Campos, was selected to participated in the Long Island String Festival Association’s Chamber Festival. They are led by music teacher Nicole Verderosa. High school student Haylee Fox was one of four recipients of the Scholar Artist Award in theater, presented by the Long Island Arts Alliance. Her winning submission was “Out Here On My Own” from the musical film “Fame” as well as a monologue from “Dreams in Captivity.” Student-artists Marc DiVito and Jasmine Westin had their work selected for the New York State Art Teachers Association’s annual Legislative Exhibit,

which was held virtually this year. Marc’s work features a storm scene with a mythical sea serpent diving in and out of waves, while Jasmine’s piece portrays a woman revealing that underneath her clothing, she is a skeleton. Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is a nonprofit, communitybased organization that was founded in 1967 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” legislation. EOC of Suffolk promotes self-sufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. Formally designated as a “Community Action Agency” by the federal government, it channels block grants from Washington to meet the needs of Long Islanders. While most of EOC’s work takes place in Suffolk County, the organization also provides a number of its services in Nassau County. Three of its initiatives that take place in both of those counties are: 1) The Housing Counseling program, which helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. 2) Its Developmental Disabilities work, which provides a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities – all aimed at enhancing their quality of life. 3) The Chronic Health Care Coordination program, which helps individuals manage their own physical health, mental health and social needs in a comprehensive manner. Additionally, five of their many programs offered in Suffolk County include: 1) EOC of Suffolk’s Youth and Adolescent Services, which promotes leadership, healthy decision making, sexual health and pregnancy prevention among local youth. The organization’s after-school programs serve more than 1,000 middle school students daily, providing academic and skill-building activities that promote

vocational and educational growth. 2) The Rapid Rehousing Program, which helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness and aims to return them as quickly as possible to permanent housing within their home communities. EOC of Suffolk team members address and troubleshoot barriers to obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. 3) EOC of Suffolk helps keep neighborhood streets safe though its SNUG (GUNS spelled backwards) Violence Prevention program, which functions in cooperation with residents, private industry and communitybased organizations. SNUG helps identify and defuse community “hot spots”. It also provides mentorship and leadership-oriented services to youth who are gang members or who are at risk of joining gangs. 4) The organization’s Targeted Prevention and Supportive Service Program supports people living with HIV/ AIDS. Clients are treated with respect, dignity, privacy and trust. Services include transportation, consumer advice, assistance obtaining beneﬁts, linkages to substance abuse and mental health services, legal services, health education and testing. 5) Recognizing the importance of childcare for working families, EOC of Suffolk owns and operates three childcare learning centers: Way to Grow in East Patchogue, Montauk Childcare Center and a childcare center at the Family Court complex in Central Islip. Those facilities meet the highest standards of early childhood education. Children participate in activities providing intellectual stimulation and fostering self-reliance and social responsibility. Legislator Donnelly Attends Deer Park And North Babylon Youth League Opening Days Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently joined Babylon Town elected officials, parents, neighbors and hundreds of young sluggers as the Deer Park Little League and North Babylon Youth League opened the 2022 baseball season with their annual parades and celebrations. On Saturday April 9, Legislator Donnelly marched in the Deer Park Little League parade to Pine Acres Park in Deer Park. The following day, on April 10, Legislator Donnelly marched in the North Babylon Youth League parade which made its way to Phelps Lane Park in North Babylon. Both were attended by eager parents and players alike, excited to once again hear the crack of the bat. “As a diehard fan, I always look forward to the start of baseball season, and I am excited to once

Babylon Grade School Joins Fight Against ALS Students at Babylon Grade School had a special visit from members of the ALS Ride for Life team during an assembly on April 13. ALS Ride for Life was founded in 1997 as a patient-driven, volunteer organization with the mission of raising research funds to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, while also raising awareness and services for those with the disease. The organization has since raised more than $10 million On April 13, students and staff at Babylon Grade School wore pajamas to school to “Put ALS to Sleep” and collected donations for the organization. Paul Weisman visited the school to speak to the students about his disease and some of the challenges of ALS. Founder Chris Pendergast started the organization with the mission of teaching people about the disease while riding all over Long Island. Since May is ALS Awareness month, members of ALS Ride for Life plan to ride again while stopping to visit schools across Long Island. Mr. Weisman reminded students in Babylon to “never give up, never lose hope and always be willing to defy the odds.”
