Babylon School District students from the JuniorSenior High School participated in the 34th annual New York Art Teachers Association Olympics of the Visual Arts in Saratoga Springs on April 21st. Nineteen Babylon students, along with art teachers Pat Stork, Cheryl Schweider and Stacey Famiglietti, competed in four teams. More than 800 students from 34 school districts throughout New York State participated in the art

competition in categories including fashion design, architecture, photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, illustration and graphic design. Babylon students worked as teams and were required to create a project prior to the event. At the competition, each team worked together to complete a spontaneous team challenge. Students were judged on brainstorming, research, creativity, how they solve the problem given and craftsmanship.

One junior high school team worked on “Trashy Fashion,” creating a wearable garment entirely out of reused paper products. The other junior high school team created a sculpture based on the theme “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” The senior high school team created a sculpture using one of Adele’s songs as the subject. The second senior high school team, a graphic design team, created stamps based on American artists.

Walkway Dedicated Friends, family, and former colleagues of Ellen T. McVeety gathered at the Town of Babylon 9/11 Memorial last week to honor the longtime councilwoman who was instrumental in the original planning and development of the site. The pathway between Overlook and Cedar beaches that leads to the

memorial will now be called Ellen T. McVeety Way. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Councilman Lindsay Henry, and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to reveal the sign displaying the new name of the pathway.

McVeety, who served as a Town councilwoman from 1999-2013, was honored for her years of public service and specifically for her significant role in working closely with 9/11 families to create the memorial. Supervisor Schaffer presented McVeety with an official Town proclamation to honor the special day.

Twelve year-old animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita recently had a very special opportunity to share her love of animals with the children at The Cancer Center for KIDS at Winthrop Hospital in Mineola. Last year, Victoria interviewed one of her heroes in the animal world, legendary animal expert,

Jack Hanna. During the interview they discussed the upcoming release of his new book, Jack Hanna’s Big Book of Why – a fun and fascinating book that is easy to read and answers lots of questions most people have about animals. Victoria was thrilled to be able to deliver many signed copies of Jack’s new book to Kim Krupa, a certified child life specialist

at The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop Hospital. Victoria also included a specially made bookmark featuring a picture of her and Jack and a pink note that read “I hope you enjoy these very special books. They are a gift to you from Media Lab Books and are signed with love by Jack.” Jack’s youngest daughter, Julie, battled leukemia as a child. She always shared her father’s love for animals and now works at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium as an animal educator where Jack is the Director Emeritus. Julie has a special touch with baby animals and often raises young orphans at home. Victoria went on to say, “Jack Hanna is an incredible man who has traveled the world to help educate us all about the amazing animals on our planet. He is also one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet.”

Rosie Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point. In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties. Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations. She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog. After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work. On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

landfills. The class collected a variety of items, and buried them in the ground outside of the school. Prior to burying the items in the ground, the second-grade classes discussed the difference between biodegradable items and items that are

not biodegradable. The students then made their own hypotheses as to which items will decompose underground during the next two months. In June, the students will see if their hypotheses were correct when they will dig up the items and see which ones are still there.

Through the Distance Learning Program at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, educators have the ability to leverage learning from around the globe, bringing down the walls of the classroom and exposing students to a diverse array of educational opportunities. One such activity was SSCM’s participation in a series of Video Conferences with the Milwaukee Public Museum, during which students learned all about “The Christmas

Tree Ship” in their “Art of Storytelling” Series. Guided instruction from experts in a dynamic digital setting keeps kids engaged and entertained while learning lots and allows teachers to then return to the classroom with hands-on activities that bolster that learning. Fifth Grade teacher, Mrs. Nicole Congro tasked students with thinking through what they’d absorbed during the session and transform the story into a 4-panel story board of their own creation. The students’ designs were wide and varied and showed how much they’d taken away from their far-away instructors in order to showcase their creativity and round out this virtual activity to make it a more authentic hands-on learning experience. Students from all across the country submit projects for consideration to the museum as part of this program, so the news was extra exciting that for the second year in a row, a number of projects from SSCM students have been selected and are on display in the museum’s Student Art Exhibit nearly 1,000 miles away! Babylon students embraced their 21st century skills by using the 4Cs – creativity, communication, collaborative and critical thinking – by analyzing and writing poetry in their classrooms. Throughout the day, classes gathered together in the library during their English periods to share their favorite poems with their peers, either original works or a poem by one of their favorite authors.
