Student-Scientists Ten students in grades 2-5 at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District completed their science research projects as part of their participation in the annual Kids Inquiry Conference. The students were tasked with demonstrating their understanding of the scientific method by conducting a science experiment. Students completed their projects at home over a period of a few

months, and were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals, in addition to an honorable mention. At a celebratory event, students presented their projects to their peers and received their medals and certificates from Principal Drew Olson and School Science Coordinator Tracy Jacquemain. Second-grader Matthew Coppola and fifth-grader Tyler Schmitt earned gold medals and will be presenting their projects at a regional competition at Brookhaven

National Laboratory. Silver medals were earned by second-grader Spencer Jordan, third-grader Ian Nolan, third-grader Patrick Schmitt, fourthgrader Kathryn Iudica and fifth-grader Dilara Kurnaz. Bronze medals recipients include secondgrader Amaya Carson and fourth-grader Isabella Coppola. Second-grader Clara Ibrahim received an STUDENT-SCIENTISTS - Parliament Place students who completed their science honorable mention.

Five minutes passed, and my concerns began to fade; Nature had spun its magic, majestic and unafraid. Soon I noticed people in cars surround me, Sharing this comfort the scene implored. It’s nice to know there are others Eager to find a moment like this And take the time to explore. Refreshed and encouraged, I began to take my leave, And in the rearview mirror the scene began to fade; But the choice to come was a choice well made.

They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness

There are moments that stay with you. Forever. And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious commodity, one often taken for granted right up until the moment that it runs out. One day runs into the next – and we

often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.

Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. The most important thing is to appreciate those moments – the ones that stay with you – right then, while they are happening. You just never know when it might be the last opportunity. Such is the bittersweet nature of life; the great unknown. May we all be so fortunate to have memories worth treasuring along the way.

Legislator for a Day Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory was joined by Jeremiah Hardy, the winner of the 15th Legislative District’s African-American History Month Essay Contest, as he served as “Legislator for a Day” at the legislature’s general meeting on April 12th in Hauppauge. In honor of African American History Month, Presiding Officer Gregory sponsored an essay contest for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. The topic of the essay was: “How do the contributions of 20th century AfricanAmericans affect your daily life?” The goal of the contest is for students to learn

about African-Americans who achieved greatness and to develop an appreciation of their contributions to society. This year’s winner, Jeremiah Hardy, is a student at Milton L. Olive Middle School in Wyandanch. Jeremiah’s essay discussed the contributions of AfricanAmerican inventor George Washington Carver and how his work still affects our daily lives. As “Legislator for a Day,” Jeremiah shadowed Presiding Officer Gregory, sitting with him during the general meeting, and received a tour of the legislature building.

Academic Teams Impress The North Babylon varsity and junior varsity Academic Teams competed at the Regional Quiz Bowl Finals at Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School against the top 40 high school varsity and junior varsity Quiz Bowl teams on Long Island, and both qualified for the playoffs. The varsity team consisted of Zach Thomas (captain), Haggai Anglade,
