Some Benefits of Growing Older Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great beneﬁts to growing old. • Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President. This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. If you would like to volunteer at a Bay or Beach Clean-Up Event, please email operationsplash@optonline. net or call (516) 378-4770 to see when their next clean-up will be. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. The Babylon School District would like to extend sincere congratulations toward Babylon JuniorSenior High School student Agnes Goldin for receiving a $5,000 scholarship through Distributive Education Clubs of America in partnership with Hilton based on a submitted application and excellent performances during DECA competitions. Agnes is one of only three students from New York State to receive a DECA scholarship this year, as DECA and its corporate partners awards more than $300,000 annually in scholarships to students across the nation. Additionally, she is the first Babylon student to have ever received this prestigious award. She will be accepting her award at the International DECA Career Conference to be held in Orlando, Florida

on April 30. Agnes has been a member of DECA for four years, maintaining the role as and president for the past two years. She has been a voting delegate at the New York State DECA

Career Conference for four years and was also on the nominations committee during her sophomore year. In addition, Agnes qualified for the International DECA Career conference for three of

her four years at Babylon JSHS. “I could not think of a worthier recipient for this award,” said Babylon Junior-Senior High School DECA adviser Claire Reilly.

Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

In recognition of World Down Syndrome Day which takes place annually on March 21, staff and students from the Babylon School District recently came together to host a “Rock Your Socks” event which celebrated the unique qualities that everyone brings to school on a daily basis.

This year, the Babylon School District partnered with Café Europa, who created sock-shaped pizzas for the special day. Twenty percent of the proceeds from the pizza sales were donated to the Babylon Buddies, who in turn will donate the proceeds to The Association for Children with Down Syndrome.

The date for WDSD was strategically chosen to take place on the 21st day of the year’s third month, as it signifies the uniqueness of the trisomy of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. This day of awareness has been recognized by the United Nations since 2012.

Diversity Through Literature North Babylon’s Parliament Place Elementary School highlighted the arts and the multicultural diversity through literature for the school’s International Children’s Book Day celebration on April 4. For the celebration, teachers had guest readers read

trade books on each grade level that represent many different ethnicities. In Ms. Anna Montuori’s class, Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney visited students and read “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” by Hans Christian Andersen. After that, Ms. Montuori’s

In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.

North Babylon’s Woods Road Elementary School fifth-graders took spectators back in time during the school’s third annual presentation of the Living Wax Museum 2019 Hall of Heroes. For the project, students were assigned with an inspirational figure from ancient to modern times who have made historical impacts. Students represented individuals

who were activists, creative thinkers, inventors and leaders who inspired the world. Students were tasked to create an informative poster board and then take on the persona of that individual by dressing as them for the museum. During the viewing, students posed in front of their posters and waited for parents and other grade-

level students to “press” a button that was placed on their attire. This prompted students to come to life and provide an informative speech about the individual they were representing. The interactive activity was a great way for students to become deeply informed of significant historical figures that changed the world.
