Recognizing Your Life Cycles year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way. Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.” We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards. We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant

ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice. We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion. This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle. A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life. Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again. Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

During the viewing, students posed in front of their posters and waited for parents and other grade-level students to “press” a button that was placed on their attire. This prompted students to come to life and provide an informative speech about the individual they were representing. The interactive activity was a great way for students to become deeply informed of significant historical figures that changed the world.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local

North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School’s Student Council met with Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly during their monthly Student Council meeting on April 3. Students discussed

a variety of topics with Donnelly including the different levels and branches of government. They also discussed how their roles as leaders within the school community demonstrate a willingness to serve the people of the

community. In addition, Legislature Donnelly explained his personal background and how he came to hold public office, and he answered student questions.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. offers the following Boat Cleaning Tips, that I felt were worthy of publishing!

Gazpacho A Healthy Favorite

This gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free and vegan Gazpacho recipe was submitted by Registered Dietician Nutritionist, Lee Cotton, RDN (www. leecottonrdn.com). Lee lives and practices nutritional counseling in Florida, but reads our newspaper online at www.SouthBaysNeighbor.com. For people with dietary restrictions, eliminating certain foods doesn't have to deprive you of flavor, as this recipe for Gazpacho proves! What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced

Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth. 2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth. 3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed. 4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly. 5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time. 6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes. 9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy! A Multicultural Experience In an effort to celebrate the many cultures of the world, members of the Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s World Languages Club, American Sign Language Club, ENL Club, Spanish Honor Society and French Honor Society recently came together to host a multicultural fair that featured elements of Spain, Mexico, France, Italy, China and Central American Indigenous

Culture. During the fair, Spanish Honor Society members taught visitors how to make a Spanish Abanico (fan), while representatives of the French Honor Society decorated locks of love for the bridge called Pont des Arts in Paris, France. Additionally, ASL Club taught various signs and demonstrated to visitors what it is like to be deaf by use of soundblocking headphones.

Visitors also had the chance to “Spin the Wheel of Pizza,” make Chinese lanterns, create Mexican maracas and create Mayan friendship bracelets. According to Director of ENL and World Languages Michelle Scharff, everyone enjoyed learning the dances of cultures featured including the hora, merengue, bachata, salsa, Irish Step and more.

Gian runs Jaxson’s as a general maintenance shop, along with his brother BJ. Gian’s stepfather Mark was who he and BJ got their earlier education in mechanics from, and he was part of the original business plan. Unfortunately, Mark has since been involved in a serious motorcycle accident. He is okay but is no longer able to work alongside them. Gian has always stood out

Youth Art Month In recognition of the Council for Art Education’s Youth Art Month, students enrolled in both Patricia Stork’s and Cheryl Schweider’s art classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School are taking part in a series of fun and engaging art projects. During lunch periods, students were encouraged to assist in painting a community-driven “paint by numbers” canvas.

The finished product will display a beautiful field of flowers once all of the designated sections have been filled in. In an effort to enhance their familiarity with film photography, students worked on a project in which they take a photo of a fellow classmate, along with an object of their choosing. Taking the negatives from both photographs, the

students then merge the two together to form a beautiful layered image. In coordination with “The Umbrella Project,” students expanded their artistic visions by adding splashes of color and imagination to blank umbrellas. The students chose to create designs such as dragons, the moon and the sun and geometric shapes for their projects. In honor of the Babylon

School District’s Panther logo, the students also created a large sculpture in the image of the exotic feline. As an added twist, those involved with the project have added old computer parts, such as loose keys throughout the length of its body, along with computer mice serving as the panther’s paws.

Gian diverted the much needed attention from himself and shifted it to those in need. It was all about Lighthouse Missions, which is an amazing organization that feeds the homeless and less fortunate people living among us.

Gian released the car to them at no charge and told them about the great work Lighthouse Missions was doing. He encouraged them to seek some assistance. The family was very grateful and as soon as their rough patch

In an effort to enhance their familiarity with film photography, students worked on a project in which they take a photo of a fellow classmate, along with an object of their choosing. Taking the negatives from both photographs, the students then merge the two together to form a beautiful layered image. In coordination with “The Umbrella Project,” students expanded their artistic visions by adding splashes of color and imagination to blank umbrellas. The students chose to create designs such as dragons, the moon and the sun and geometric shapes for their projects. Vietnam War Memorial and the Korean War Memorial to help further their understanding of the history they are studying this year. A highlight for some students was a visit to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where they were able to meet and talk with survivors of the Holocaust.

Additionally, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery allowed students to witness the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which strengthen their appreciation of the ultimate sacrifice made by members of the Armed Forces.

Seventh- and eighthgrade students from the Babylon Junior-Senior High School were recently treated to a highly informative presentation regarding energy efficiency education, courtesy of PSEG Long

Island partnered with The National Theatre for Children. With assistance from NTC representatives Beth Cassidy and Nick Kwietniak, students and teachers alike were offered the opportunity to learn

about energy conservation. During their time spent in Rowe Hall, both Beth and Nick spoke to the attendees about what energy is, its many uses, how energy is wasted and the best ways to conserve energy.
