he Belmont Elementary School community set a new record for funds raised during the annual month-long “Pennies for Patients” campaign to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The school raised a total of $7,070.94, surpassing its previous record of $7,000, which was set last year. The carrier needed to withstand numerous drops and students could only use the materials provided to complete their projects. Each of the teams did a fantastic job of creating unique and effective carriers for their eggs.

Moreover, they had a ton of fun and showcased their “egg-cellent” teamwork skills, all while soaking in valuable lessons on the concepts of momentum, force and energy. Four of the five teams were successful in completing repeated egg drops with no breakage and all seemed to enjoy the scientific process. Go, Science!

Prestigious Distinction North Babylon School District has been named a 2016 Best Community for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants and the University of Kansas the 10th year it has been recognized since 2003. The district is one of 476 school systems across the nation to earn the prestigious distinction, which recognizes districts that demonstrate exceptional commitment and efforts toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum. North Babylon’s music program continued to expand and support student enrichment in several ways this year. A grant from the Arts Reach Fund (of Long Island Community Bank) has provided music lessons for those preparing NYSSMA adjudications and college auditions. In addition, the district’s music department is using

innovative technology to teach high school orchestra students how to electronically tune their own instruments as well as teach high school Music Theory students how to create and record original songs in GarageBand. Plus, middle school orchestra and band students are being taught how to practice more accurately in SmartMusic, and receiving enhance instruction using iPad apps designed to offer additional support for students. This year’s many remarkable accomplishments of the district’s music program include two students selected All-State; 51 students selected AllCounty; five students selected to perform at the festival concerts of the Long Island String Festival Association; two students selected to represent the district at

the NYSCAME All-County concert; middle school students performing at the State Capitol; the high school’s choir performing at a Martin Luther King Jr. luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch in Hauppauge; and numerous other performances highlighting students’ talents. “We love having our children and community acknowledged for their fantastic and consistent support in educating the whole child in such excellent fashion,” said District Director of Arts Dr. Kim LowenborgCoyne. “I am proud that our community, administration and Board of Education continue to support the students and families in North Babylon as they pursue their study of the arts as part of a well-rounded educational program.”

Henry Winkler, best known for his charismatic role on Happy Days, now spends his time spreading awareness about dyslexia – a learning disability he struggled with growing up. In addition to being an actor, director and producer, Henry is the bestselling co-author, with Lin Oliver, of the popular children’s book series Hank Zipzer and Here’s Hank. Henry has visited classrooms around the world to speak about the series, which was inspired by his own learning challenges with dyslexia. Recently, twelve yearold journalist Victoria Bonavita had a chance to sit down with Henry and his writing partner Lin Oliver at the Book Revue in Huntington to discuss the seventh book in their “Here’s Hank” series titled “Here’s Hank: You Can’t Drink A Meatball Through A Straw.” The storyline revolves around Hank, a second grader who doesn’t try to be funny, but somehow always seems to make the other kids laugh. He’s pretty bad at memorizing stuff, and spelling is his worst subject (but so are math and reading!) memorizing words in school. He said he always wondered why he couldn’t figure things out like everyone else, then at 31, he found out he had something with a name and it let him relax a little bit. 555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon brieﬂy scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. And counting. Stay tuned for that book. And Buddy’s, of course.

The Belmont Elementary School community set a new record for funds raised during the annual monthlong “Pennies for Patients” campaign to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The school raised a total of $7,070.94, surpassing its previous record of $7,000, which was set last year. To achieve the amazing figure, the school hosted a variety of fun activities designed to raise funds in creative ways throughout March. Each week of the month had a special designation including “Cash for a Cookie,” “Stuck for a Buck Campaign,” “Movie Night,” and culminated with an assembly and duct-taping, respectively. During week one, students received a coupon for a free cookie from Panera Bread and had their names displayed on a wall if they donated $1; during week two, students who donated $1 were eligible to vote for which staff member they would like to see duct-taped to the wall at the end of the month; during week three, “Movie Night” tickets were available to be purchased, as were snacks and rafﬂe tickets during the event; and during the culminating assembly, a staff member was duct-taped to the wall and a check was presented to a representative

from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The classes who raised the most money were rewarded with a pasta party and ice cream party. Belmont’s 2016 “Pennies

for Patients” campaign highlighted the school’s continuing altruistic efforts and taught students the importance of charitable endeavors.

Keeping the schoolcommunity connection top of mind, student council members at Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently participated in a Spring Smiles project. The students created and designed cards and pictures

to send to local nursing homes. They discussed how some senior residents may have no families or sparsely decorated living spaces. With this in mind, the student council hoped their creations will bring a smile to the residents’ faces as spring begins. The student council felt

it was such a worthwhile project that it decided to invite the entire school to participate. They are collecting additional cards, letters and pictures from all the grades, which will be sent to local area nursing homes.

Long Distance Learning West Babylon Senior High School students participated in a distancelearning lesson with scientists and educators from Monterey Bay Aquarium in California on March 24th. During the 45-minute session, the group of students in grades 9-12

interacted with scientists and educators from the aquarium via Skype and their cellphones, learning about the unique wildlife on the West Coast. “Distance-learning programs are a unique new way of having students learn without having to travel, and our students

were very excited to be able to ask and answer questions in real-time with Monterey Bay professionals,” said West Babylon Senior High School science teacher Andrea Montalvo. “It was like having a guest speaker from 2,500 miles away.”
