The Dangers Of Dented Cans

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

The Modern Era

The modern era is often referred to as the “Digital Age,” but mankind’s relationship with science and technology dates back much further than the 21st century. According to Wired.com, in 2006 scientists confirmed that a device discovered in 1900 amid the remains of an ancient Mediterranean shipwreck was an analog computer. The device, since dubbed the “Antikythera Computer,” was believed to help calculate astronomical cycles so sailors could more easily sail between Alexandria and Athens. The Antikythera Computer has been dated to sometime around the first century B.C., proving that man’s fascination with gadgets is an ancient one that has been paying dividends for millenia.

The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Did you know that senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world? The number of Americans 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Michael, a Plainview resident. Michael wished for a record player and vinyl records. The Twilight Wish Foundation happily granted his wish, and as far as the records go, he received two of his favorites! Michael had worked in insurance and took an early train into the city every morning, returning home late at night. By the time he retired, he was ready for senior living accommodations. However, retirement did not stop his desire to volunteer. Prepandemic he worked closely to help people who were lower functioning/ had dementia. During the pandemic,

he was still the first person to ask others what they needed and if he could be of help in any way. He truly gives so much without thinking of taking. Thank you for being you, Michael! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you are interested in volunteering with their Long Island Chapter, you can fill out the Chapter Volunteer Application at www.twilightwish.org/volunteeropportunities/ and someone will get in contact with you regarding how you can do so. The Long Island chapter operates under the direction of James Ciervo. Lastly, if you would like to donate to this organization, please visit their website. Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

We enjoy having you there too.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

than 1.5 million students who enter the annual competition. This year’s scores are based on the 2019 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In honor of her achievement, Autumn received a Letter of Commendation from the school, as well as the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, or NMSC. “Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential

Food Drive to Benefit Long Island Residents in Need Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park) is pleased to announce that over 2,000 pounds of food were collected at his food drive in Babylon Village on Saturday, February 27, 2021 to benefit Long Island residents in need. “During this challenging time, we must ensure that everyone has the food they need. Maintaining our food supply and ensuring

that people have enough to eat – especially our most vulnerable populations – is a responsibility we share as a community,” said Durso. “The 2,000 plus pounds of food collected, will provide over 1,800 meals to Long Islanders needing food assistance. Thank you to all who donated, and thank you to Island Harvest, the elected officials, community leaders and

youth organizations, whose contributions made the event a huge success.” All items collected through the program were donated to Island Harvest which delivers millions of pounds of food to Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens and other non-profit organizations that offer food assistance to those in need.

Babylon Memorial Grade School Celebrates P.S. I Love You Day Babylon Memorial Grade School recently celebrated the annual P.S. I Love You Day. The focus of the day’s programming at BMGS was the importance of being friends with someone who is different, being aware of others’ words and actions, reaching out to someone who is lonely and standing up for someone who is mistreated. Students and staff wore the color purple or their official P.S. I Love You Day shirts to promote unity and help raise awareness for these messages. Student Council representatives from

each class organized a schoolwide socialemotional learning activity for all students to participate in that focused around this year’s theme. Each student was given a wing template and wrote about a way in which they could “lift others up,” which were pieced together to form a beautiful wing display in the school’s main hallway, titled “We Rise by Lifting Others.” The class representatives also created a bulletin board display of “Songs That Lift Us Up.” Students not only suggested songs that could help put them in a

good mood, but they also listened to excerpts of these songs played over the daily announcements. Lastly, teachers found creative ways to support this theme in their individual classrooms by having their students participate in various kindness-themed lessons. Babylon Union Free School District extends a special thank you to student council advisers Erin Kennedy, Nicole Cupo and Amy Malone for all their hard work in organizing this special celebration for BMGS students and staff.

In the 1640s, the Halsey family began farming in the Water Mill and Bridgehampton area. Today, their family farm tradition continues as Milk Pail Fresh Market & U-Pick, which is run by both Amy and Jennifer Halsey. Both Amy and Jennifer received agricultural educations and returned to the farm after college. Amy manages the retail store, helps design gardens, custom designs planters and more. Jenn is on the farm growing the crops. She once had even been named New York Young Farmer of the Year by the New York State Farm Bureau and proudly represented her state at the national finals held in Texas. At their farm they grow apples, peaches, pumpkins, blueberries, pears and table grapes. Many value-added products are made from their produce, including fresh apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple and pumpkin pies and more. With the help of their dedicated staff, this family farm continues many traditions, while also trying new ideas to grow the business! Running a farm is no easy task, but Amy and Jennifer make it seem so! Visit their farm for a great experience on the East End.

Rhonda Klch is the Executive Director and Founder of Equity First, which was formed in 2004. This organization provides financial education, literacy and best practices to the community at low or no cost. Lisa Gatti is the Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian and the mother of her 13 year old daughter, who is the pride and joy of her life. Her passion for horses and teaching began at a very young age. In college, she was the captain of the equestrian team and she graduated with a dual degree in Elementary and Special Education. She has supplemented her education throughout the years by taking other educational programs. In 1996 and 2000, Lisa was named as US Team Leader for the US Equestrian Paralympic Team in Atlanta, Georgia and Sydney, Australia. From 2008-2013 Lisa served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAGALA, the global standard for equine assisted psychotherapy and personal development. In 2015, Lisa was named to the Board of Autism Communities. Most recently in 2019, she was appointed to the Town of Islip Disability Advisory Committee to help local government identify the most crucial issues facing our special needs population. She was honored with the 2020 Woman of Distinction and Distinguished Service Award from The Town of Islip, is a current finalist for the Imagine Awards for the Leadership Excellence Category and just received the 2021 Circle Of Excellence Award from the Long Island Business News. Throughout the pandemic, she still sees the greatness around her everyday and believes that when we see it in others, we know it, and when we trust its presence in ourselves, we embody it.

Eileen Scanlon has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years. She has worked with Corporate America, Non Profits, Academia and local grass-roots organizations.
